Situated in the South Birmingham suburb of Kings Heath, the Hare & Hounds has been around since 1820, but has stood in its present form since 1907. This is a major contributing factor to its current Grade II listed status, along with the beautiful and unique Art Nouveau tiles that line the entry hall and staircase.
Although playing host to local Birmingham legends UB40’s first ever gig in 1979, it is only since 2007 that it’s really established itself as one of the most important and influential music venues in the country, playing a vital part in nurturing the city’s vibrant music and creative community.
The pub boasts two downstairs bars which host a weekly pub quiz on Wednesdays, the hugely popular Blues Club on Saturday afternoons, comedy workshops and more. The two famous upstairs venues feature live music & club nights spanning jazz, indie, funk, reggae, hip hop, soul, house, techno, drum & bass and beyond.
How can I book a gig?
If you’re looking to hire the venue for your own gig, please email email@example.com .
How to get there?
We’re a short cab ride or bus journey from town and are accessible from most places in Birmingham. The number 50 and 35 buses stop just outside the venue.
Where can I stay?
Our nearest hotel is the Travelodge in Maypole, but we are a short cab ride or bus journey away from the city centre which has a variety of hotels to suit any budget. We recommend Travelodge, Clayton, Malmaison.
Do you have a pub quiz?
Yes! We have a weekly quiz on every Wednesday from 8pm, teams of up to 6 people, £2 per person.
Do you serve food?
We don’t serve food but there are plenty of great restaurants nearby. We recommend Poli, The Juke, Spice Merchant, Snap Eat, Syhlet Spice, Grace & James, Byzantium and Marmaris all within walking distance.
Can I buy tickets in person? On the door?
You can buy tickets for Leftfoot or This Is Tmrw events behind the bar any time of the day, however tickets to all other events are only available online. If you want to buy tickets on the door we recommend getting down early in case of a show selling out.
We’re pretty laid back when it comes to dress code, but do not allow tracksuits, jogging bottoms, shell suits, sports shorts or football colours. No site/work clothes after 7.30pm on a Friday & Saturday.
If you have left something behind in the pub or venue, please call us on 0121 444 2081 and a member of staff will check lost property for you.
Our pub is accessible by wheelchair, however access to our venues includes a flight of stairs. Because we’re a Grade II listed building, we’re very sorry that we’re not able to make amendments to the building’s structure such as a lift. Our bar staff are more than happy to assist you up the stairs where possible. If you have any type of disability, whether it be physical, hearing, visual or learning, we will do our best to assist you in having a comfortable experience at any of our events. Please get in touch in with firstname.lastname@example.org in advance so we can make any arrangements.
We have a disabled toilet on the ground floor, for disabled access within the venues please get in touch in advance or ask a manager on the night.
We have a cloakroom available at all hours for £2 per item. We accept bigger items like suitcases but recommend you keep valuables with you at all times.
We have a zero-tolerance approach to drug use. Anyone caught in possession will be ejected and barred from the venue and reported to the police.
We don’t have parking at the venue but are based in a residential area with lots of street parking available. Please try York Road, Waterloo Road or Heathfield Road all within walking distance.
The majority of our mid-week shows are 14+/under 16s must be accompanied by an adult, although this isn’t always the case. Please check ticket links or email email@example.com if uncertain. Our Friday and Saturday nights are strictly 18+.
Dogs are very welcome in the downstairs pub but please note that we can be extremely busy and loud on weekend evenings or from 7pm onwards during the week if shows are on. No dogs allowed in the venues.
