Situated in the South Birmingham suburb of Kings Heath, the Hare & Hounds has been around since 1820, but has stood in its present form since 1907. This is a major contributing factor to its current Grade II listed status, along with the beautiful and unique Art Nouveau tiles that line the entry hall and staircase.
Although playing host to local Birmingham legends UB40’s first ever gig in 1979, it is only since 2007 that it’s really established itself as one of the most important and influential music venues in the country, playing a vital part in nurturing the city’s vibrant music and creative community.
The pub boasts two downstairs bars which host a weekly pub quiz on Wednesdays, the hugely popular Blues Club on Saturday afternoons, comedy workshops and more. The two famous upstairs venues feature live music & club nights spanning jazz, indie, funk, reggae, hip hop, soul, house, techno, drum & bass and beyond.
From Sunday – Thursday most of our shows are 14+ unless otherwise specified, but anyone aged 14 – 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone 16 and under that does not have an adult with them will not be permitted entry. Shows on Friday and Saturday nights are strictly 18+. Please check ticket links or email email@example.com if uncertain.
How can I book a gig?
If you’re looking to hire the venue for your own gig, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Can I buy event tickets in person? On the door?
We recommend buying tickets online for all our events prior to the show day to avoid missing out (simply head to the What’s On tab of our website for ticket links to all our events!) however if the event is not sold out, you are always able to buy tickets on the door the night of the event, both cash and card payment available.
How to get there?
We’re a short cab ride or bus journey from town and are accessible from most places in Birmingham. The number 50 and 35 buses stop just outside the venue. Kings Heath Train Station due to open in December 2024.
Do you serve food?
Yes! Head to the Food tab of our website to browse our menu and kitchen opening hours.
Do you have a pub quiz?

Where can I stay?
Our nearest hotel is the Bournbrook Inn in Stirchley, but we are a short cab ride or bus journey away from the city centre which has a variety of hotels to suit any budget. We recommend Holiday Inn, Travelodge or the Moseley Arms.
We’re pretty laid back when it comes to dress code, but do not allow full tracksuits, branded jogging bottoms, shell suits, sports shorts or football colours after 9PM on a Friday & Saturday. No site/work clothes after 7.30pm on a Friday & Saturday.
After 9PM on Fridays and Saturdays customer’s bags will be searched, and our security will use metal detector scanners and check IDs. Customers are encouraged to report any inappropriate or aggressive behaviour to our staff – we have a zero tolerance policy towards harassment, bullying or behaviour that makes others feel uncomfortable.
If you have left something behind in the pub or venue, please call us on 0121 444 2081 and a member of staff will check lost property for you.
We provide free carer tickets to anyone that needs assistance to attend one of our shows. To request a ticket, please email email@example.com who will assist you on this matter.
We have a disabled toilet on the ground floor, for disabled access within the venues please get in touch in advance or ask a manager on the night.
We have a cloakroom available at all hours for £2 per item. We accept bigger items like suitcases but recommend you keep valuables with you at all times.
We have a zero-tolerance approach to drug use. Anyone caught in possession will be ejected and barred from the venue and reported to the police.
We don’t have parking at the venue but are based in a residential area with lots of street parking available. Please try York Road, Waterloo Road or Heathfield Road all within walking distance.
