Johnny Borrell and Zazou to headline Hare & Hounds

After ten years making widescreen records and playing big stages with his UK rock ‘n’ roll band Razorlight, Johnny Borrell found himself restricted by too many expectations.

He retreated to a hideout in the Basque country of southern France, and threw himself into a self-liberating writing session which fluently produced a full album of startling, voluptuous songs. A trio of gifted multi-instrumentalist musicians were handpicked and in a matter of weeks some kind of rakish marvel of a band had come together.

Gone is the swagger and bravado of a musician who belted out those smash hits from stadiums, and Johnny is keen to again embrace the intimacy of the nation’s smaller venues. What hasn’t gone is that eloquent songwriting and tuneful harmony, the angelic and soaring voice, the musicianship and empathy with his huge fan base.

Johnny had found the path into a new musical space, a joyous cross-genre context for his writing, bursting with harmonies and sax solos, maverick rhythms and graphic storylines and destined to drag people onto the dancefloor in any bar or club where love and music mingle. Earlier this year Johnny released a four track cassette recording of new tracks ‘Dahlia Allegro’ and ‘Pan-European Supermodel Song (Oh Gina!)’ as a Double A side limited edition 7” vinyl. Now, Johnny has announced seven small club shows previewing his new solo material, including Birmingham’s own Hare & Hounds.
