Introducing Connan Mockasin

This is Tmrw continue their run of January shows by bringing the undeniable unique Connan Mockasin to the Hare & Hounds on Thursday 23rd January.

When discussing Connan Mockasin, there appears to be one looming question; where hasn’t this blonde haired bliss not been? Originating from Te Awanga, New Zealand, Mockasin has done some serious travelling, making his way from Wellington to London, and from there to East Sussex, and by the looks of the last year or two, he has no intention of staying still in 2014.

So what’s he all about? Well his sound is as elusive as his appearance; it’s safe to say Mockasin is sight for the eyes, and ears. His lightening coloured head top immediately grabs your attention, and then of course he begins to sing. His music and style has been described as ‘psychedelic pop’, but the question arises, whether is it fair to even label the music Mockasin makes? It’s so far outside of the box any specific word in our dictionary wouldn’t quite fit the bracket.

However, if you were to try and pick a word or phrase to depict the mood or space where the New Zealander takes you, ‘vibrant’ ‘funky’ ‘soulful’ are a few that spring to mind. Mockasin’s elusive stream of consciousness takes you on a journey; not one you may always understand or comprehend, but a voyage all the same, that will intrigue you as much as it’ll leave you wanting more, attempting to figure out the indefinable artist capable of producing such unsystematic sounds.

Conforming he is not, and he should be saluted for it. He is daring in his approach, and since his group disbanded and Mockasin became a solo artist, he has gone from strength to strength. Already onto his second album, Caramel, the first song, Nothing Lasts Forever, is definitely an eye opener and the sign of things to come.
