Marika Hackman Plays H&H This Sunday

Most 21-year-olds still don’t know what to do with their lives, but Marika Hackman has already been a model for Burberry, and is tipped to be a breakthrough pop artist this year.It was when she was 14 years old and she played her first gig with school friend Cara Delevingne (Hackman played drums while the supermodel played guitar and sang) that she gained a taste for being a musician.

Marika’s music is something very different to the happy-clappy nature of recent folk , hers is a far more potent vision in the lineage of Syd Barrett, but presented by an enigmatic beauty with a striking vocal delivery more akin to that of Nico deftly exploring an unsmiling bereft landscape.

Having already toured  with Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Marika Hackman has scheduled her biggest headline touring stint to date, hitting the road during March. The singer, whose Sugar Blind EP is streaming beneath, will play shows in London, Manchester, Sheffield and other UK cities. She’ll also soon head into the studio to work on her debut album.

Howling Bells to play Hare & Hounds

Australian four-piece Howling Bells return with their stunning new album, Heartstrings, set for release on 2nd June 2014. Recorded at London’s Assault and Battery Studios with producers Catherine J Marks and Alan Moulder, the album is preceded by a single, ‘Slowburn’, on 7th April. The band will celebrate the release of the single by hitting the road and stop by Hare & Hounds Birmingham on Tues 3rd June 2014.

Heartstrings is Howling Bells’ fourth album, and the first they have recorded in their adopted hometown of London (the band’s debut, Howling Bells (2006), was demoed in Australia and recorded in Liverpool, while Radio Wars (2009) and 2011’s The Loudest Engine saw the band decamp to Los Angeles and Las Vegas respectively).

Taking a different approach to the making of their previous records, Howling Bells made the recording of Heartstrings an intense process, laying down a track a day for 11 days, resulting in a potent collection of songs.

Dar Williams Plays H&H This Sunday 9th March

One of the most lauded singer-songwriters of her generation, Dar Williams has been captivating audiences with her sheer elegance and honesty in her folk-pop songwriting since the early ’90s. As documented on her last album, the 2010 two-disc retrospective Many Great Companions, Williams’ growth as an individual over her almost two-decade-long career has gone hand-in-hand with her evolution as an artist. She has toured with such distinguished artists as Joan Baez, Patty Griffin, Ani DiFranco, and Shawn Colvin, and recently became a regular contributor to the Huffington Post’s Green Blog.

Dar’s last album from 2012 ‘In The Time Of Gods’, Dar’s first album of original material in four years was produced by Kevin Killen (U2, Elvis Costello, andPeter Gabriel), and features special guests Shawn Colvin and Larry Campbell, and a remarkable set of musicians including Charley Drayton, Gerry Leonard, and Rob Hyman. Williams presents 10 original compositions on In The Time Of Gods, which explores many of today’s most challenging social issues told against the parables of Greek mythology. The inimitable collection of songs includes some of the richest and most evocative writing of Williams’ career.
