New Show: Ugly Duckling to play H&H

We’re pleased to announce that AGMP will be bringing West Coast Hip-Hop trio Ugly Duckling to the Hare & Hounds this May

Ugly Duckling’s musical sound is a combination of late 80’s/early 90’s hip hop, funk, soul, and jazz with plenty of humor and high-spirited skillfulness from both lyricists and DJ. Audiences and critics have agreed over the years that Ugly Duckling’s brand of hip hop is unique and authentic while the stage show is always fun, exciting, and super tight. Comparable to groups like Jurassic 5, The Pharcyde, and A Tribe Called Quest, the band knows how to make listeners feel good and has kept their musical authenticity throughout the years, avoiding the pitfalls and embarrassment of pop star ambition.

New Show: Romare to DJ the Hare & Hounds

We’re pleased to announce that Vacuum Boogie & Leftfoot will be joining forces to bring Romare (Ninja Tunes) to the H&H this March.

One of the most exciting British talents to emerge from the electronic world of late, Romare’s music combines a seriousness of intent with a thrilling immediacy. The discovery of revered American collagist Romare Bearden whilst at university became a lightning bolt moment, as is revealed by the moniker he chose for himself. More importantly, Bearden’s collages inspired the young musician to pursue a similar technique in his productions, harnessing its power to illuminate and assert through re-contextualisation.

With two vinyl EP releases on the excellent Black Acre label – Meditations on Afrocentrism (2012) and Love Songs: Part One (2013) – fiercely supported by the likes of Benji B, Gilles Peterson, Huw Stephens and Bonobo, Romare’s music has, rightfully, already caused a stir. A true artist, Romare’s music moves the mind as much as the feet, its sense of detail married to its mood, melody and passion. Check out his Boiler Room set from November last year below:

It all kicks off at 9pm on Friday 27th March, £5 early bird tickets have already sold out with advanced £7 now available here.

Sons of Bill To Play the H&H Next Tuesday

Cosmic American Music bring Americana Country outfit Sons of Bill to the H&H on Tuesday 17th February.

It’s easy to say that Sons of Bill can sound more like Townes Van Zandt or early R.E.M. depending on the track, even moving into their own brand of down-home psychedelia that American Songwriter described as a “countrified Pink Floyd.” But the real achievement of Love and Logic is the song writing, the Wilson brothers’ ability to craft literate and deeply introspective lyrics while still managing to deliver it all as a rock and roll band. It’s a soul-searcher’s soundtrack for an over-stimulated age. A roots rock album that stands out above the all rest.

Sons of Bill became more than Charlottesville’s best kept secret with the release of the Sirens LP, a brash rock and roll record, which debuted on the Billboard top 200 and #12 on the Heatseekers chart in 2012. The band toured extensively on both sides of the Atlantic for a year and a half and gained some notoriety for their fiery live performances and road dog work ethic. But Love and Logic certainly marks a turning point for the band- a more sober, reflective, version of themselves- the sound of a band coming into its own. New Show: Freestyle Presents DJ Vadim

We’re pleased to announce that Freestyle will be bringing two of their favourite artists DJ Vadim and Fingathing to the Hare & Hounds on Friday 8th May for one of their biggest shows to date.

Russian born and London residing, DJ Vadim has built a reputation as one of the world’s top independent producers; travelling the globe, performing and collaborating with established and developing talents that cross continents, languages and cultures. Vadim has become well respected as an innovator in a number of areas during his career, “a veteran presence in the DJ community as well as one of the foremost producers in too many communities to count, Vadim is never running out of ideas” (URB Magazine).

Hard to put a peg on because he sticks to no rule-book, Vadim’s musical repertoire encompasses hip hop, trip hop, soul, funk, grime, reggae, dub and bass, and he has produced numerous solo and group albums across these genres (Ninja Tune, Jazzfudge, Wordsound, BBE) with seminal tracks such as The Terrorist, Black Is The Night and Bluebird. Throughout his career he has worked with a variety of musicians, singers and groups, including DJ Krush, Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Prince, Public Enemy, Dilated Peoples, Kraftwerk, Sly and The Family Stone, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Super Furry Animals, and Paul Weller.

Fingathing meanwhile, were formed in 1997 after DJ Peter Parker came 3rd in the DMC UK mixing championships and was drafted in to work with Northern beat label Grand Central Records. He met double bass playing jazz head Sneaky on the first day, and the pair instantly hit it off making music in a way that had never been tried before; using just one turntable and the bass they made serious block-rocking power grooves. Add to this the warped visuals from the mind of Parkers old art college friend Chris Drury, and you have one stunningly unique outfit.

After releasing three critically acclaimed LPs (The Main Event, Superhero Music and Fingathing & The Big Red Nebula Band), gaining a cult following and touring as far as Russia, Africa, USA, Latvia and most of Europe, as well as being asked personally by DJ Shadow to support him on his UK tour, Fingathing went on hiatus is 2006.

Re-assembling to create a newer, more powerful vision of themselves, 2014 saw the Return Of The Thing EP released (co-produced by Sirconical) and a large UK tour followed to promote the new sound. With Tru Thoughts about to release a cover of the Georgio Moroder classic I Feel Love which the pair recorded along with blues/folk siren Jesca Hoop on guest vocals, we’re delighted to welcome Fingathing to the Hare & Hounds for their first Birmingham show in nearly 10 years.

Advanced £10 tickets for the show are on sale now, you find them by clicking here.

The Godfathers Play the H&H This Friday

Legendary British rock & roll group The Godfathers were formed in 1985 by brothers Peter Coyne (vocals) & Chris Coyne (bass/vocals) from the ashes of their previous band The Sid Presley Experience. The Godfathers toured extensively & quickly earned a serious reputation for their electrifying brand of primal rock & roll & their incendiary live shows around the world.

Forming a recording partnership with famed producer Vic Maile The Godfathers released 4 critically acclaimed, smash hit independent singles on their own Corporate Image label (‘Lonely Man’, ‘This Damn Nation’, ‘I Want Everything’ & ‘Love Is Dead’) which alongside a brutal cover of Lennon’s ‘Cold Turkey’ were compiled into their seminal debut album release ‘Hit By Hit’ in ’86 & signing a worldwide deal with Sony/Epic records in ’87.

They unleashed the storming rocker ‘Birth School Work Death’ as a single in ’87 & scored a US Billboard top 40 hit after massive college radio airplay & heavy MTV rotation. Then the classic ‘Birth School Work Death’ album was released in ’88 (includes the ‘hit’ anthem title track, & singles ‘Cause I Said So’ & a re-recorded ‘Love Is Dead’) & was celebrated with extensive tours of the UK, Europe & U S A & they cemented their reputation as one of the best live acts of the period. Their inspired image, raw lyrics & guitar-driven, edgy rock & roll sound was in direct contrast to the clean, synthesized sounds that mainly dominated the mainstream charts at that time & foreshadowed the Brit-Pop/Rock resurgence of the early 1990’s.

The Godfathers (now featuring Peter Coyne/Vocals, Christopher Coyne/Bass & Vocals, Sreve Crittall/Guitar & Vocals, Mauro Venegas/Guitar & Vocals & Tim James/Drums & Vocals) are currently writing material for a brand new studio album to be released sometime in 2015 to coincide with their landmark 30thanniversary & will perform extensive tours worldwide to promote it with the Hare & Hounds their choice of venue for the Birmingham leg.

It all kicks off this Friday 13th at 8pm with advanced £12.50 tickets on sale now, find them here.

False Lights is the new project from folk visionaries Jim Moray and Sam Carter. In development behind closed doors for several months, a shared love of folk and heavy guitar music has produced a distinct sound which has more to do with Radiohead than Steeleye Span: an explosion of loud, electric, guitar-driven folk for the 21st century.
