The line-up of acts scheduled This Is Tmrw‘s typically hectic September/October run of shows culminates in the return of the blistering force of METZ, for a Halloween show special.
It will have been little over a year since the Toronto three-piece were last unleashed upon the crowd at the Hare; a show that flashed by in a crash of pummelling white noise and sweat. As the band tore rapturously through their set, younger members of the crowd threw themselves around at the foot of the stage, whilst the elder contingent grinned with adulation from greater distance.
The energy screaming from the stage is almost as unnerving as it is invigorating; an atmosphere the band have honed, but by no means tamed, over the course of a relentless two-year touring period, straight off the back of the release of their rightfully lauded debut record. It is no surprise then, that METZ have earned a reputation as one of North-America’s finest touring bands.
Since their previous show at the Hare in August last year however, they finally took time out from touring to write and record an album of new material. Whilst not representing a drastic deviation from their self-titled debut, the resulting ‘METZ II’ is perhaps a purer expression of what the band do.
Though retaining much of what made their debut so appealing, this is a noticeably less refined collection of tracks; a heavier, looser, darker sounding affair, with all the rough edges and sinister tones left bare. As you’d expect, frontman Alex Edkins’ penchant for a terse, screaming delivery has all the same aggression, with his frustrations squared at themes of loss, self-doubt, and disenchantment with vapid human interaction and culture.
The immediacy of this relentless intensity, both live and on record, puts METZ almost beyond reproach. And despite the musical lineage with which the trio are commonly associated, there is no place for nostalgia in the face of such noise. METZ are very much their own beast, and with this new record, ensuring they remain the vital exponents of their own titanic sound. Check out the video for their single ‘The Swimmer’ below;
