New Show: MisterWives

We’re delighted to announce that American pop band MisterWives will be performing live at the Hare & Hounds on Tuesday 10th April 2018.

Following the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Our Own House, touring internationally with bands such as Panic! At The Disco, and performing at some of the biggest music festivals around the globe, MisterWives began a new chapter in 2017. The band, consisting of Mandy Lee [vocals], Etienne Bowler [drums], William Hehir [bass], Marc Campbell [guitar], Jesse Blum [keys, trumpet, accordion] and Mike Murphy [Saxophone] released their highly anticipated second album Connect the Dots worldwide through Photo Finish/Republic Records in May. Born and raised in the creative crucible of New York City, MisterWives are the latest in a long line of genre defying bands to break out of the city that never sleeps and gain recognition on a global stage.

New Show: Alex Lahey

We’re delighted to announce that Alex Lahey will be performing at the Hare & Hounds on Sunday 25th March 2018.

The Melbourne singer-songwriter will return to Europe in March of next year for a new headline tour. The tour takes in 11 dates, including a show at London’s Omeara on 23rd March, having sold out last month’s London headline show.

The new tour follows an incredible year for Alex, which saw her follow up lauded EP B-Grade University with her fantastic debut album I Love You Like A Brother. The perfect balance of catchy pop melodies with knowingly wry lyrics, the album received praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NME, DIY, London In Stereo and more.

While touring the US last month, Alex gave national TV audiences a taste of her infectious live show with her first live TV performance for Late Night With Seth Meyers. Watch Alex and her band play ‘Every Day’s The Weekend’ below

New Show: Hak Baker

We’re delighted to announce that Goldenvoice will be bringing singer/songwriter Hak Baker to the Hare & Hounds on Wednesday 28th February!

26 year old Hak Baker was a member of the grime collective B.O.M.B Squad before he picked up the guitar and started writing his own music.   With his achingly honest guitar ballads, Baker is in a position to be calling the likes of Skepta big fans.

Talking about his single ‘7AM’, Baker commented that “This is the era of the misfitted people. The video is an expression of how they have fun only to eventually, inevitably deal with their own issues and insecurities on their own; in their own world using their own methods. We are all escapists at the end of the day.”

Hare & Hounds Pick of the Weekend: Chaos In The CBD

Once again, we’re back with our pick of the weekend. This week, it’s Leftfoot & MoodFix Present Chaos In The CBD!

The first time Chaos In The CBD graced the decks at the Hare & Hounds they took the roof off. That was two years ago and since then they’ve blown up, with Boiler Room sets, the launch of their label In Dust We Trust and headline slots at many of the best international festivals. The kiwi bro’s first gained underground notoriety with their debut release on Rhythm Section in 2015, ‘Midnight in Peckham’. That trademark sound of complex drum patterns and ethereal sounds hasn’t left their production, but their DJ’s sets can take on a whole different beast. On the 18th November, we’re expecting Chaos to bring the party with a high energy set of Disco, House, Techno and everything in between.

Also back for a second time is the hugely talented, anu, one of the heads behind Rhythm Section. Anu’s a DJ, illustrator and Radio Host who’s name is becoming more and more commonplace among some of the best underground lineups in the UK, and we can’t wait to welcome her back.

Hare & Hounds Pick of the Weekend: Surgeon, Steve Davis & More

Going forward, we will now be highlighting what we think is the most exciting show happening at the venue over the forthcoming weekends.

To kick this off, we have picked a show which is arguably one of the best of the month – Surgeon, Steve Davis & Kavus Torabi, and DJ Bus Replacement Service!

For those who don’t know, Surgeon has been at the forefront of UK techno since 1994. His debut EP is regarded by many as seminal, launching his career along with several early Downwards releases, causing a ripple of excitement through the techno cognoscenti of the time. Surgeon has been prolific since, with three albums on Tresor and numerous Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension EPs as well as his ‘Breaking The Frame’ LP in 2011. Over the course of his career, the Birmingham resident has perfected a unique and uncommonly effective production style. His is a tough techno sound with an industrial murk about it but also plenty of funk, swing and a sophisticated sense of dub-space learned in part from his Chain Reaction contemporaries in Berlin. Proving that hard can also be smart, sensuous and danceable, the influence of Surgeon on the 2010-ruling Ostgut/Berghain sound – DJs/producers like Marcel Dettmann, Shed et al – is substantial. We can’t wait to have him headline this show.

Returning to the Hare after a killer show back in March this year is the one and only Steve Davis – this time with alt-music partner in tow – Kavus Torabi. The legendary sporting phenomenon from the 80s who took snooker to new heights and as presenter of The Interesting Alternative Show on Pheonix FM with Kavus brought prog and jazz oddities to his cult audience, now turns his hands to the decks. As a hobby which he claims has spun out of control, their notorious 2016 Glastonbury set at the 500 capacity Stonebridge bar was mobbed by a curious turned shocked and enthralled crowd. With a packed out DJ diary since, the duo has continued to woo party goers from Bluedot to Bloc Festival. Drawing from an eclectic array of influences: Magma, Caravan, Oscar Perry, Soft Machine and Gong to name but a few – Steve & Kavus spin together a unique set in their quest to deliver the music they love to lovers of the party.

New Show: Hookworms

We’re pleased to announce that Hookworms will be performing at the Hare & Hounds as part of their forthcoming UK tour.

Five piece psychedelic/ noise rock band, Hookworms are five full-length albums in, and are continuing to put out great rock music and continuing to perform great live shows for their fans. Based out of Leeds/Halifax, England the members only go by their initials: JN, JW, MB, MJ, SS, which leaves the concentration completely on the music, as well as the experience during their live shows.

Their live shows are an experience for the senses. Before the band takes the stage, the venue becomes completely darkened, until a bluish light comes on and you can see the outline of the band members on stage. Immediately as the first chord is strummed, the psychedelic kicks in and you are essentially transported to another world. The lights start to flash, you add to the theme of the band, making you feel like lighter than air, like you are supposed to be falling through time and through dimensions and the music is your guide. The vocal effects are completely out of this world, and seem so unreal. Overall the show evokes your senses, starting with your ears, and then your eyes, and as you let the music surround you and take over, your body starts to move as well.

New Show: Gengahr

We’re delighted to announce that the North London indie four piece Gengahr, are set to perform at the Hare & Hounds on Thursday 26th April 2018.

On the surface, the hazy indie that this band command seems a million miles from anything that might prompt sleepless nights, but it’s the slowly creeping scares that leave the deepest impression. Through their smog and psych, frontman Felix Bushe’s lyricism draws upon the darkest corners of both the supernatural and the more grounded. Breakthrough track ‘Fill My Gums With Blood’, for example, is a tale of “a little boy vampire who falls for a girl” whilst ‘Powder’’s instrumentation melts around a wistful pondering on death. Their initial three-track demo brought them praise from Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and 6Music’s Lauren Laverne, and landed them on bills alongside fellow raucous upstarts Wolf Alice and Superfood as well as more established countrymen alt-J, Dry The River and The Maccabees.

New Show: Boat To Row

We’re pleased to announce that Boat To Row will be performing at the Hare & Hounds on Sunday 17th December for a Christmas Special show!

Boat To Row are known for delivering an intricate set woven with strings and vocal harmonies, layered with an ever-expanding collection of instruments. They combine a genuine ease in each other’s musical company with an energetic, skilfully crafted sound.

Since forming in 2010, Boat to Row have released 3 eps and 2 singles paving the way for this highly acclaimed band to deliver their stunning debut album ‘I Found You Here’. Set for release in November 2015 on their own label, Nocturne Records, it was fan funded through a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign on Pledge Music. Recorded to tape at Birmingham’s legendary Highbury Studio, the premise was to capture the energy of playing live, instead of searching for the perfect take. ‘I Found You Here’ is a collection of songs exploring ideas of love, loss, hope and the relentless compulsion to try and try again They are songs cloaked in the imagery and sentiment of storytellers who have gone before.

New Show: Jen Cloher

We’re delighted to announce that This Is Tmrw will be welcoming the incredible Jen Cloher to the Hare & Hounds as part of her forthcoming tour!

“It’s self-titled.”  The three-word answer is all that Jen Cloher requires to describe her recently completed fourth album, a letter in triplicate addressed to themes of Love, Music and Australia (the beautiful and the terrible). Jen likes best to tell the truth.

Jen Cloher is the culmination of a period of artistic and personal growth in which the artist took her rightful place as the punk-rock figurehead of Melbourne’s famous DIY music scene. The NIDA Graduate is an outspoken advocate for artist rights and the co-founder of the incredible Milk! Records label (Courtney Barnett, Loose Tooth, Fraser A. Gorman, Jade Imagine, East Brunswick All Girls Choir). Cloher’s fascinating life-story and compelling political voice is enough justification to pay her attention, but it’s the music that will have you returning again and again.

Since 2014, Jen’s regular musical contributions to Milk! Record’s discography of 7″ releases and compilations have been increasingly biting, witty and poetic. It’s fair to say that she was in a purple patch when she put the finishing touches to her stunning new record with engineer Greg Walker amidst the rolling greenery of Jumbunna in Victoria’s Gippsland. The band that first played together four years ago on Cloher’s acclaimed third album, the Australian Music Prize nominated In Blood Memory, are bold and assured, the songs split by Courtney Barnett’s extraordinary lead-guitar and anchored by the rhythm section of Bones Sloane and Jen Sholakis. The record was completed in March 2017 with Tom Schick at Jeff Tweedy’s famous ‘Loft’ Studios in the depths of Chicago’s winter.

Check out her single ‘Forgot Myself‘ from the album below:

Tickets on sale 12th October at 9am here.

New Show: Ryan McMullan

We’re delighted to be welcoming Ryan McMullan back to the Hare & Hounds on December 11th, after his sell-out show here earlier this September.

Ryan McMullan’s talent is a rare jewel in the crown of the current popular music scene. With a voice raw with story telling and filled with rich and varied tones, Ryan’s youth clearly doesn’t deter from his ability to communicate story and emotion. Home to the likes of Foy Vance and Iain Archer, Northern Ireland is and always has been a hub of song writing talent. Ryan McMullan is no exception.

Hailing from Portaferry, a small seaside town in Northern Ireland, the 25 year old is a fresh new talent on the singer/songwriter scene. With a voice reminiscent of Paolo Nutini and early Tom Waits, Ryan has been putting in the necessary graft in local pubs for a number of years. His voice and potential has recently caught the attention of other singer songwriters also born out of the grass roots Northern Ireland music scene. With their backing, Ryan’s craft of songwriting being harnessed and endorsed by some of the music industries biggest names, Ryan’s future is certainly set to be a bright one.

Check out the video below of Ryan performing an impromptu song backstage, you can tell that this boy has talent.
