New Show: Harvey Sutherland & Bermuda Live

We’re pleased to announce that Leftfoot & Moodfix will be teaming up to bring Harvey Sutherland & Bermuda live to the H&H on Thursday 1st June.

As an aspiring artist, Melbourne’s electronic music scene can be a tough nut to crack. The city is awash with talented DJs and musicians, who perform to notoriously demanding audiences, setting the bar for entry very high. Harvey Sutherland, AKA Mike Katz, made his name in this climate, and on this RA Session you’ll see why he’s gained so much respect in Melbourne. Katz is a former session musician who was a member of //This Thing//, a collective of local DJs and musicians who throw parties and release records and tapes through an eponymous label. He put out some music under his given name and the alias Mike Kay a few years back, but Katz really found his groove when he adopted the name Harvey Sutherland and began developing the breezy style he’s now known for. “Bermuda,” released last year through Motor City Drum Ensemble’s MCDE label, probably sums it up best. You could call it a house track but that’s a touch reductive—Katz’s sunny Juno 60 keys and baggy drums nod equally to disco or boogie. Between that release and others for This Thing, Voyage Recordings and Echovolt Records, Katz has fleshed out a signature sound that you’d only maybe mistake for the best of early Floating Points.

Lately, though, Katz has been expanding his palate. There’s his techno-influenced project with Kane Ikin called Coup d’état, which released its first record back in February, and now we get Bermuda, a “futuristic disco” trio that sees him collaborating with the drummer Graeme Pogson and the string player Tamil Rogeon. New Show: Andrew Weatherall

We’re pleased to announce that Leftfoot will be teaming up with Dark Corner Disco to bring Andrew Weatherall back to the Hare & Hounds on Friday 14th July.

The swaggering original moody DJ; the pop star producer; bastion of the underground; one-time Balearic figure-head; electronic experimentalist; peerless explorer of the minimal techno sound. All notions that have been bandied about in a bid to pin down Weatherall’s role in music. Yet none of them quite fits the bill. In the dull as ditch-water world of dance music personalities, Andrew Weatherall comes across as a refreshing and involving character. Check out his latest Beats In Space appearance below;

New Show: The Goon Sax

We’re pleased to announce that This Is Tmrw will be bringing The Goon Sax to the H&H on Monday 5th June.

Louis Forster, James Harrison and Riley Jones are all 17-18 years old. They make pop music. They have refined tastes – they love the Pastels, Talking Heads, Galaxie 500, Bob Dylan and Arthur Russell. On Up To Anything they pull off the almost impossible, capturing the awkwardness, self-doubt and visceral excitement of teenage life, while still in the thick of actually living it. Goon Sax songs are both immediately charming and deceptively deep – Sweaty Hands examines a point in a relationship where you’re seen at your worst, while Telephone addresses the heartbreaking realisation that noth- ing you offer your crush is enough. New Show: Jesca Hoop

We’re pleased to announce that This Is Tmrw will be brining Jesca Hoop to the H&H on Monday 27th November.

Jesca Hoop has lived all over the map, and her rich life experience is reflected in her distinctive voice and natural gift for inventive song craft. Hoop learned to sing at an early age, harmonising with her musical Mormon family in northern California. She began writing highly idiosyncratic songs at the age of 14 to keep her company on her long walks to school. At 16, Hoop broke away from her strict upbringing and began what she calls her ‘life as a racoon’, off the grid & close to nature. Check out the video for her latest single ‘Memories Are Now’ below;

Nightmares on Wax this Saturday at the H&H

We’re delighted to announce that Leftfoot will be bringing Nightmares On Wax (DJ Set) back to the Hare & Hounds this Saturday 8th April as part of the Soundcrash Funk & Soul Weekender launch party.
It is no exaggeration to say that Nightmares on Wax’s work is synonymous with a place in time. It is a place individual to those who have savoured his popular b…rand of sun-drenched dubbed out soul, where fragments of hazy memories, halcyon days and past snapshots encapsulate a generation’s sofa sojourning.

For George Eveyln, the man behind Nightmares on Wax, did indeed create some defining moments in the 90’s. Firstly there was his involvement in writing two of the U.K.’s early rave classics Dexterous and Aftermath (with then writing partner Kevin Harper from the Nightmares A Word of Science album). George then went alone and in ’95 bought us Smoker’s Delight, a downbeat opus and the archetype 90’s stoner album (not surprisingly, he was a one time high judge of the Cannibus Cup in Amsterdam). The effect of Smokers Delight was palpable as it is considered one of the main catalysts in the explosion of the chill out / down tempo genre today.  Producing the genuine article and constantly evolving and progressing is the prime motivation behind Nightmares’ music. It is about taking the sounds of soul and reggae and hip-hop and more to a new plateaux. “Today’s music is inspired by what’s gone on before and that is what fascinates me. Following on in that tradition I am inspired by the old and want to evolve it into something new. I see it as a never ending cycle and that is where I want to be.”

Support on the night comes from Leftfoot DJs with advance £15 tickets on sale now, you can get hold of yours by clicking here.

Moomin at the H&H Next Saturday 8th April

On Saturday the 8th April Coloré, Moulin Groove & Cache will be flying in Berlin based Moomin to the H&H from the heralded Hamburg label SMALLVILLE RECORDS. Known for his organic sounding productions with crisp TR-808 drums, soft ethereal pads and ambient, piano laden melodies his music is a staple in many a deep house selectors bag.

Sebastian Genz (aka Moomin) defined his musical career by crafting subtle, yet effective, deep house. In the early ’90s, Genz was dedicated to collecting hip-hop records. By 1995, and with a growing collection, he started to DJ in his hometown of Kiel, Germany. Around the same time, he began experimenting with music production, using a simple DOS program known as Fastracker. He gradually incorporated more hardware into his methods, including an MPC to sample the old jazz, funk, and hip-hop records he had acquired. Eventually, Genz became disenfranchised by the German hip-hop scene, transitioning to house music instead. The change in genre called for a change of location, so he migrated to Germany’s creative capital, Berlin.

Over a decade later, in 2010, Genz released his debut EP via AIM; he wasn’t as concerned about the long wait for his debut as he was about creating it. The EP received positive reviews, causing German label Smallville Records — with a roster including Move D, Christopher Rau, and label founders Smallpeople — to reach out to Genz. They urged him to release a full-length album, resulting in 2011’s The Story About You. Genz’s production style fit perfectly with the Smallville ethos of understated and thoughtful house, creating a close relationship with the label in the years that followed. After the success of his debut full-length and a string of EPs, Smallville encouraged him to release another Moomin album, resulting in 2016’s A Minor Thought.
