MAY/JUNE 2021: H&H COVID INFO FOR CUSTOMERS

H&H Customer Information – Staying Safe & Socially Distanced.

Next Wednesday 19th May, we reopen our doors for the first time in 14 months! We’re incredibly excited to welcome everyone back and have made various changes to ensure that the venue is Covid secure, safe and comfortable for you all.

The entrance to the pub will be located on the side of the building on York Road (the High St door will be exit only). You will be greeted by our door host who will advise on seats available & entrances for ticket holders.

Every member of your party will be required to scan the track and trace app or leave your details should you not have a smart phone.

All guests are legally required to wear face coverings when moving around the inside of the venue unless they are exempt.  Face coverings can be removed when seated.

We are not operating a booking system so seats are first come first served. We ask customers to try and keep visits to 2 hours to allow space for other customers. If there isn’t a queue, then you’re more than welcome to keep your seat.

We have created new additional outside seating on York Road. This area is available until 10.30pm.

Drinks will be served directly to your table, after ordering via our App. There will be no need to head to the bar.  If you are having any trouble with the app, our floor staff will be more than happy to help.

Our opening times will be limited from May 19th to June 21st – See below…

H&H supported by Cultural Recovery Fund

After many months of stress and uncertainty, we’re absolutely delighted to announce that the Hare & Hounds Kings Heaths has been supported by the Cultural Recovery Fund.

This is a huge moment for us and this funding has given us a lifeline and will help us stay afloat during the challenging months ahead. It will also allow us to explore and trial new approaches to live music at the venue, as we plan towards re starting our business.

We want to thank everyone for all the love and support we’ve received, everyone’s support has meant the world to us and has really helped us remain positive and hopeful during this crisis.

These are incredibly testing times for all of us and many of our colleagues and friends in the music industry will not of been successful today so we ask that everyone get behind them and lets do all we can to save them.

H&H August Statement

**UPDATE ON THE HARE AND HOUNDS**

We’ve had lots of you get in touch to enquire about our plans for re-opening and to ask how you can support us through these challenging times.  As always, these messages are really appreciated and remind us that community spirit is as strong as ever.   Here’s a quick update on our plans.

Although indoor live music is now permitted, it is subject to strict conditions and as things stand, those conditions don’t offer us a workable financial model.  Our socially distanced seated capacity for gigs is 50, and our downstairs capacity is 80.  We are unable to cover anywhere near our operating costs with so few people in the building.

Current rules state that music volume must be background, the audience must be seated and singing and dancing is prohibited.  Of course we fully understand the need for such restrictions, but with this in mind, we are not sure this is how the vast majority of our gigs should be experienced.

Please fear not though, there is nothing more we want than to be open and enjoying a drink and some live music with you all as soon as possible.  We are doing a lot of planning and rescheduling behind the scenes, and carrying out some long-overdue maintenance work so the place looks fantastic for our re-opening.

We’re also working on a fundraising scheme at the moment, which we’ll release details of in the coming weeks.   As we all know, the situation can change very quickly, so please keep an eye on our social media for new updates.  As ever, thanks so much for all the support and we hope to see you all again soon.

H&H July Statement

Firstly we’d just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who’s been in touch with messages of support over the last few months. The goodwill and positivity from so many in our community has been overwhelming.

Since the Government’s announcement last week, we’ve been weighing up many different business models to try and make the July 4th re-opening work. Unfortunately as things stand with current guidelines, we’re not in a position to open just yet. Operating just the downstairs bars without any entertainment happening upstairs, presents us with some financial obstacles that place our longer term future at risk. We also need to feel fully confident that we can provide an environment that is safe for both our staff and customers.

With that in mind, we won’t be opening on July 4th, but will do everything we can to get our doors open as soon as possible. We’re desperate to welcome you all back but we just need to make sure we do it under the right circumstances.

H&H awarded Arts Council funding!

We’re delighted to announce that we have received an Arts Council England Emergency Grant to help support the Hare through this current crisis.

Without this funding the future looked incredibly uncertain for us and although we’re not fully in the clear, this money will help protect the venue for the time being.

With that in mind we’d like to say a big THANK YOU to #NationalLottery players for making it possible for the Arts Council to fund us.

We look forward to opening again in the future and supporting live music in our community for many years to come.

New Show: Malcolm Middleton

We’re pleased to announce that This Is Tmrw are welcoming Malcolm Middleton to the Hare & Hounds this December. The Scottish guitarist and songwriter is best known for his work with Aidan Moffat in Scottish rock legends ARAB STRAP, and has since established himself as a solo artist in the indie genre with six albums, releasing music under his own name as well as the alias HUMAN DON’T BE ANGRY. His most recent album, Summer of ’13, included singles such as ‘Steps’, and his forthcoming album ‘BANANAS’ will be released on 28th September on Triassic Tusk Records.

On ‘BANANAS’ Malcolm has teamed up with the acclaimed not-jazz trio JEANSY, JONES & SMILLIE (David Jeans DRUMS, Stevie Jones DOUBLE BASS and Graeme Smillie PIANO) to produce an album that is both scathing and nice. With new songs like “BUZZ LIGHTYEAR HELMET”, “LOVE IS A MOMENTARY LAPSE IN SELF-LOATHING” and “PISS OFF LIFE, JUST KILL ME NOW” (that last one is a joke), Malcolm continues to report back from the depths of the everyday whilst attempting to monetise HELL. Adding a dose of saccharine to the mix, the Samaratinesque choir of Kenny Anderson (KING CREOSOTE), Jenny Reeve (BDY_PRTS) and Dan Wilson (WITHERED HAND) courageously manage to pull Malcolm back from the brink of many a teetering jont just as he’s about to disappear up his own proverbial.

New Show: Jigsawmusic 15th Birthday with Luke Unabomber

We’re pleased to announce that Jigsawmusic will be celebrating 15 years this September, and will be welcoming Manchester legend Luke Unabomber to help with the proceedings.

Luke Unabomber and DJ partner Justin Unabomber founded the Electric Chair club night in Manchester some time after the middle half of the 1990s. The night was, in part, a reaction to the strict house music sound that had dominated Manchester’s clubs since the late 1980s, but had veered off course musically since the spirited days of acid house and was burdened with associations to gang violence.

Electric Chair ripped up the rule book. It wasn’t the first club night to offer an eclectic soundtrack, but alongside Manchester contributors like Mr Scruff, the Fat City connected nights and others, Electric Chair helped establish a fresh, new Manchester club sound that was at the time unique within the UK.

As resident DJs, The Unabombers had their own special way of building a night’s soundtrack with this multi music format. It took in hip hop and other breakbeat music and generally built in tempo to cover funk, soul, disco and house music.

With such a free music policy they were able to invite incredibly varied guest DJs to join them, some known as specialists in reggae or hip hop, others for techno, house or disco. They, in turn, could sometimes offer at Electric Chair a wildly different set from their usual shows, let loose on the furthest reaches of their record collections thanks to the club’s anything (good) goes music policy.

From Electric Chair the duo expanded their portfolio. They took on international DJ dates and founded a clandestine, sporadic and nomadic sister party the Electric Soul events. Luke joined Justin, who had long been associated with music making as a bass player (most notably in New Fast Automatic Daffodils) and later as solo artist Only Child, in the studio.

The fruits of their studio efforts were a series of re-edits on their own label, several well received mix compilations and original music produced under the Elektrons guise, the latter being released by Wall Of Sound (below).
