NEW SHOW: Blancmange

Hare & Hounds are delighted to welcome back sensational 80s new-wave synth pop band Blancmange to the venue on Saturday 11th May.
‘Like a latter day Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid leaving their self-imposed exile, Stephen Luscombe & Neil Arthur emerge into the sunlight with a 21st Century Blancmange LP –“blanc burn”, due for release March 7th 2011. Blancmange continue their journey as the “maiden aunts of electronic music” Daniel Miller (Mute Records) – the godfathers being Kraftwerk.
From their initial EP “Irene & Mavis”, through to their inclusion on the infamous Some Bizarre Compilation (launch pad for Depeche Mode, The The & fellow Futurama performers, Soft Cell) & to Blancmange’s eventual chart busting forays, including “Living On The Ceiling”, “Waves”, “Blind Vision” & “Don’t Tell Me” (4 top ten, 8 top 30 releases) with London Records, Blancmange developed their sound, with their pioneering use of big fat analogue synths and a battery of wondrous Indian percussion from the equally wonderful Pandit Dinesh.
Currently Blancmange can be heard in everything from La Roux to LCD Sound System to Hot Chip. Alongside their contemporaries – the Human League, Magazine, Heaven 17 & OMD – Blancmange are now being recognized as true Electro-Pop trail blazing pioneers. Faithless recently covered the band’s dance floor classic “Feel Me”, La Roux have recently included the Blancmange B-side “What’s Your Problem” on their “Sidetracked” compilation with sleeve notes proclaiming“ …the Blue Print for Hot Chip”.
Blancmange was formed in Harrow, Middlesex in 1979 by vocalist Neil Arthur (born 15 June 1958, Darwen, Lancashire) and instrumentalist Stephen Luscombe (born 29 October 1954, Hillingdon, Middlesex). The duo released their first EP ‘Irene and Mavis’ the following year, but had their first real exposure via a track on the seminal Some Bizzare Album, alongside fellow acts Soft Cell and Depeche Mode. This led to them signing a recording contract with London Records.
The duo found minor success with their 1982 double A-sided single, ‘God’s Kitchen’/’I’ve Seen The Word’ which peaked at no.65 in the UK. This was followed by ‘Feel Me’ which peaked at no.46. Later that year, they broke through with ‘Living on the Ceiling’, which reached no.7 in the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album, Happy Families (which featured a sleeve painting in the style of Louis Wain) also reached the top 30.
Further hits followed with ‘Waves’ (no.19), ‘Blind Vision’ (no.10), ‘That’s Love That It Is’ (no.33) and ‘Don’t Tell Me’ (no.8), while their second album Mange Tout also reached no.8 in the UK album chart. In 1984, Blancmange covered ABBA’s single ‘The Day Before You Came’, which reached no.22 in the UK (slightly higher than Abba’s original less than two years earlier).’

NEW SHOW: The Wave Pictures

Hare & Hounds are pleased to welcome British rock band The Wave Pictures to the venue on 30th January 2019.

Twenty years after forming in Wymeswold, Leicestershire as teenagers, The Wave Pictures have gone on to be one of the UK’s most prolific and beloved bands. Fond of classic rock, jazz and blues, they are also one of the most accomplished, with Tattersall’s guitar solos becoming the stuff of legend. They have collaborated with varying bright stars of the musical firmament, such as last year’s rock’n’roll surf-garage-rock project with Charles Watson from Slow Club, as new band The Surfing Magazines, or their ongoing partnership with ex-Herman Dune member Stanley Brinks, or the very close partnership with Billy Childish for 2015’s Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon.

They first experimented with recording an album all in one go, straight to tape with 2016’s acoustic A Season In Hull. They took the concept further with Brushes With Happiness, making sure that it was a magical album that was completely improvised, with no songs written in advance echoing the jazz and blues recordings that they admire.

The beloved trio of Jonny Helm (drums), Dave Tattersall (guitar & vocals) and Franic Rozycki (bass), further demonstrate their tight bond, weaving effortless melodies with mind bending sonic and emotional force. Look Inside Your Heart is poignant, witty, wise and wonderful.

Praise for Brushes With Happiness:

“Dreamlike, bluesy and unique.” The Guardian

“A hushed, spectral delight.” Uncut

“It’s both epic and frivolous, rather like a gravitas-free Bad Seeds.” Q Magazine

“As his Tom Verlaine guitar tones drip forth like liquid gold, you can’t help falling ever deeper beneath this record’s spell.” MOJO

TOMORROW NIGHT! Jigsawmusic x Luke Unabomber

We’re pleased to announce that the iconic club night Jigsawmusic are celebrating 15 years this September, and will be welcoming Manchester legend Luke Unabomber to help with the proceedings tomorrow night, Friday 21st. Tickets are available here!

Luke Unabomber and DJ partner Justin Unabomber founded the Electric Chair club night in Manchester some time after the middle half of the 1990s. The night was, in part, a reaction to the strict house music sound that had dominated Manchester’s clubs since the late 1980s, but had veered off course musically since the spirited days of acid house and was burdened with associations to gang violence.

Electric Chair ripped up the rule book. It wasn’t the first club night to offer an eclectic soundtrack, but alongside Manchester contributors like Mr Scruff, the Fat City connected nights and others, Electric Chair helped establish a fresh, new Manchester club sound that was at the time unique within the UK.

As resident DJs, The Unabombers had their own special way of building a night’s soundtrack with this multi music format. It took in hip hop and other breakbeat music and generally built in tempo to cover funk, soul, disco and house music.
‘Luke Unabomber is the detonator of all that is explosive about the modern Mancunian nightclub experience. In 1995 he began the Electric Chair in the decrepit old Roadhouse, mopping up the margins that had tired of the superannuated disco dollies and gangsters then souring the city’s acid house dreams. Three years later he added Homoelectric to his folio, the clubs’ gay cousin, which came with its own witty fanzine and a pleasing habit of finishing each night of its earliest incarnation with a rousingly narcotic rendition of Soft Cell’s Say Hello, Wave Goodbye. Last year Luke helped to furnish the old Manchester crew with The Refuge, a hotel bar and restaurant at the Principal, in the old Palace Assurance building on Oxford Road. It’s a spot that has delightfully upended the night-time proclivities of a twin demographic, those that were there to witness the birth of Factory Records’ Dry Bar (RIP) and those that weren’t born at the time.

Almost twenty years into its heritage, Homoelectric is currently enjoying a particularly pleasing renaissance. “It’s just fucking brilliant,” explains the third cog in its resident’s wheel. Gina Breeze is part of the triumvirate of deck wizards that make the club feel and look like home. Her more seasoned alumni are Jamie Bull, voted by the people as DJ of the Year in the Manchester Evening News annual poll twice running, and Will Tramp, recent star of the city’s celebratory nightlife documentary, Manchester Keeps On Dancing. Guests who have come to spin at Homoelectric in 2017 include Prosumer (“almost uncomfortably rammed”) and Nicky Siano. “I mean, I know what Studio 54 is,” says Gina, “but I’m learning a lot from Luke. For him, getting Nicky to play the night really was a bit of a religious experience.” – I-D Magazine
