New Show: Awesome Tapes From Africa

We’re delighted to announce that LeftfootShadow City will be bringing the legendary Awesome Tapes From Africa to Hare & Hounds on Thursday 29th March!

Since 2006, Brian Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa blog has been shedding light on obscure and wonderful sounds from across the continent. As a DJ he brings the blog to life with 2-3 hour sets blending folkloric pop, left-field dancefloor gems and hip-hop bangers he’s collected on African marketplace finds. Traveling from club to festival to DIY space, Awesome Tapes From Africa DJ sets celebrate the music and musicians whose cassettes Shimkovitz has collected over the years.

Tickets are now on sale from £8, and can be picked up here.

New Show: Palm

We’re delighted to announce that This Is Tmrw will be welcoming Palm to the Hare & Hounds on Sunday 10th June 2018.

Palm plays rock music backwards. Eve Alpert and Kasra Kurt’s guitars occupy themselves most often with the pace-keeping work typical of a rhythm section. Meanwhile, Gerasimos Livitsanos’ bass and Hugo Stanley’s drums perform commentary and reportage from their deeply embedded positions at the front. The band is firmly attached to the physicality of rock, but not as much its tone; their instruments tend to sound like any number of things at any given time. None of the members of Palm are formally trained on their instruments. The band formed in 2011 at college in Upstate New York, when high school friends Eve and Kasra met Gerasimos and Hugo. In those early days, the band was just beginning to forge its collective musical identity through experiments in recording and performing live.

Their first album, Trading Basics (2015), was written in Hudson, NY, a riverside outpost where the group could clarify its intentions outside the direct influence of nearby cultural capitals. That year, the members of Palm relocated to Philadelphia, where they continue to live only a few blocks apart from one another. This proximity has facilitated a level of collaboration necessary for a sound so slippery to remain in the firm grasp of its players.

On 2017’s Shadow Expert EP, they made use of the steady hand granted by a tireless touring schedule, cutting their songs to efficiencies of pop confection without sacrificing the avant-adventurism at the center. The effort was met withpraise from such outlets as Pitchfork, Stereogum, Spin, and Tiny Mix Tapes, who likened the sound variously to Stereolab, Slint, Sonic Youth and Broadcast. With Rock Island(2018), Palm excuses the company of these myriad influences with a sly brush of a hand, ushering the listener into a new domain, thrillingly strange for all its familiarity.

Tickets go on sale this Friday (26th January) at 10AM and can be purchased here.

New Show: Mark Seven

After two sold out parties, RetroForward are very proud to present Mark Seven to their intimate party at Hare & Hounds on Saturday 24th March.

Based in Stockholm since the late 1990s, Mark Seven began his obsession with the dance on the lengendary dancefloors of London clubland. As Acid House took root in the capital Mark was a regular at the similarly hallowed Future and Shoom and started organizing his own events. His passion for discovery led him to journey across the U.S. and Europe to source vinyl, and has resulted in his own store, Juswax. In Stockholm Mark set up the Black Lodge all-nighters, mix-tapes from which helped to alert the outside world to his knowledge and ability.

Producing since 1991 and running labels since 1992, Mark`s current project, Parkway, is inspired by the sounds he first fell in love with: the explosion of creativity that occurred post-Disco, when electronics became more affordable and the music moved back underground. Names like Paul Simpson, Winston Jones and Boyd Jarvis, Emergency, Streetwise, and Easy Street. Records with Herb “The Pump” Powers etched in the runout and segues of exclusive edits / remixes of unknown-to-all-but-a-few Black music releases of the 1980s. Unsung tracks that fed into a sound that became House. A history, that without people like Mark, would have already been forgotten.

New Show: Her's

We’re delighted to announce that This Is Tmrw will be welcoming Her’s to Hare & Hounds on Wednesday 2nd May 2018!

Dynamic pair Audun Laading and Stephen Fitzpatrick are both outsiders from sleepy coastal towns several countries apart but have established themselves as Her’s on the banks of the Mersey.  Norwegian Laading and Barrow-born Fitzpatrick met through a love of cynical humour and off-kilter cultures; such cultures that made Her’s nothing more than a natural extension to their individual voyages. This and humour has led to such instances as printing out an image of Pierce Brosnan to paste onto the front of their drum machine.

Coupled with wave after wave of luscious, Beach Fossils-esque jangle pop and the striking aesthetics denoted within, it’s a refreshingly modern take on the beach-scuzz exploration of the ’80s. Dreamy, hazy and yearning for escape with every jangle or croon, Her’s are the summery angst everyone – even the happiest of souls – can embrace.

New Show: U.S. Girls

We’re delighted to announce that This Is Tmrw be welcoming U.S. Girls to Hare & Hounds on Thursday 17th May 2018.

U.S. Girls is Illinois-born, Toronto-based artist Meghan Remy. A captivating musical force who evolved from the raw, corrosive 4-track fidelity found on her early records to the more unabashed art-pop of U.S. Girls on KRAAK (2011) and Gem (2012) – albums which helped to “widen and universalize her music without losing a drop of what previously made it so special and personal” (Pitchfork) – her debut album for 4AD, Half Free, came out in 2015.

In a Poem Unlimited is the second U.S. Girls release for 4AD, and also includes the singles, ‘Velvet 4 Sale’ and ‘Mad As Hell’. It is scheduled for release on 16th February. Remy’s sixth studio album was tracked in collaboration with the Cosmic Range, and features arrangements by Percival and Maxmilian Turnbull. A dizzying buffet of live grooves, In a Poem Unlimited represents an inversion of the dusty, sample-based minimal textures of Half Free, Remy’s euphoric 4AD debut. Poem features dark meditations on charged atmospheres that directly precede and follow acts of violence. Many of the songs are character studies of women grappling with power; how to gain and exert it spiritually, as well as desperate strategies to mitigate its infliction. Remy also rallies against the public lies told by political and religious leaders, and more crucially, questions the lies we tell ourselves in order to survive. While U.S. Girls, denoting the plural, is no longer a misnomer, In A Poem Unlimited may be Remy’s most individually distilled protest to date.

To coincide with the release of In a Poem Unlimited, U.S. Girls will tour Europe this Spring. Remy will be joined onstage by a 6-piece band. Tickets for this show go on sale this Friday (12th January), and can be picked up here.

New Show: Nap Eyes

We’re delighted to announce that This Is Tmrw will be welcoming Nap Eyes to Hare & Hounds Kings Heath as part of their European and North American tour!

Nap Eyes are pleased to announce the release of their new album, I’m Bad Now, on March 9th via Paradise of Bachelors (USA), You’ve Changed (Canada), and Jagjaguwar (rest of world). The acclaimed Canadians’ ambitious, allusive third album achieves a new sonic clarity, depth, and range to match the effortless melodies and extraordinary writing. It’s the band’s most transparent and personal set of songs to date, in which singer Nigel Chapman interrogates social, psychological, and spiritual milieus for clues about the elusive nature of knowledge.

Nap Eyes will tour North America and Europe this spring in support of I’m Bad Now, starting with a record release show in their adopted hometown of Montreal.

Tickets go on sale Friday 12th January, and can be purchased here.

New Show: Joy Orbison b2b Jon K (All Night Long)

We’re delighted to announce that LeftfootShadow City will be welcoming Joy Orbison b2b Jon K (all night long) on Friday 23rd March!

One of the most highly respected underground artists in the world, Joy Orbison never fails to deliver. With an ability to effortlessly move between a wide array of genres, we cannot wait to welcome him to play all night long at Hare & Hounds Kings Heath. A true selector, by every definition of the word.

He’s joined by Manchester’s Jon K, who’s built a solid reputation for himself by ‘delving into the depths of dark, subterranean dancefloor music with bass-fueled beats, echo-soaked space disco and all manners of electronic explorations’. This will be a night to remember.

Ticket are on sale now and can be picked up for £15 here.
