Howie Payne Next Tuesday at the H&H

Next Tuesday 7th February Birmingham Promoters welcome Howie Payne (aka Howard Eliott Payne), solo artist, producer, songwriter and the driving force behind Liverpool group The Stands to the H&H.

Following The Stands, Payne teamed up with legendary producer Ethan Johns and recorded his highly influential debut so lo LP Bright Light Ballads, which initially released as a digital download only, reached No 13 in the iTunes Album chart.

After a whirlwind decade of near constant live performances that took him around the globe, Payne took a hiatus from touring and recording to focus on songwriting and production, remaining in the public conscience through his music, with a host of artists recording and performing his songs while both The Stands LP’s, and Bright Light Ballads quickly achieved cult classic status.

September 2016 saw Payne tour the UK for the first time in 3 years, and on October 23rd he released, High Times, Home Recordings, a free 10 track download LP, recorded at his home in the late summer/early autumn 2016. High Times, Home Recordings features outtakes taken from the writing sessions for his next LP, which will be released in 2017. Check out the video of him performing his single ‘The Brightest Star’ live below;

Dan Shake - Upgraded

Due to an overwhelming demand for tickets we’re delighted to announce that Leftfoot‘s Dan Shake show with Moodfix has now been upgraded to our 250 capacity venue on Saturday 11th February.

Dan’s an artist who’s perhaps best known for being the first non-detroit artist to release on Moodymann’s prestigious label, Mahogani Music. His last set in Birmingham was at a MoodFix party almost 2 years ago and since then he’s been doing big things. Shake, the label he set up in 2015 has released a prolific run of records produced by the man himself. Most recently, the acid weapon that is ‘Claudia’s Trip’ has been causing hysteria on dance floors and sold out almost immediately, as do all of his records. His high-energy, disco fuelled Boiler Room set has been viewed 80,000 times and it highlights this mans talent as a selector.

The last few finale release £12 tickets are selling quickly, make sure you don’t miss out and grab yours now by clicking here.

New Show: Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band

We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be joining forces with The Night Owl to bring the legendary Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band to the H&H on Friday 15th September.

Geno originates from Evansville in Indiana, USA and first came to England in the 1960’s as part of the US Air Force. His love of Blues and Soul music soon found him jamming with local bands in and around Ipswich and eventually led him to London where he caused a sensation singing with top R&B acts Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band at the legendary Flamingo Club in Soho. The rest, as they say, is history.

Geno teamed up with some of London’s hottest musicians and Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band very quickly became established as the most exciting live band in Britain, regularly topping the bill over World famous artistes, as nobody in their right mind wanted to go on stage after a Geno show!

New Show: Shuggie Otis

We’re delighted to announce that AGMP will be bringing the legendary Shuggie Otis to the H&H on Wednesday 24th May.

Shuggie Otis was compared, at the age of 15, with Jimi Hendrix and the great Kings of blues guitar (B.B. King, Albert King). Shuggie went on to make two expansive, genre-defying, deeply curious albums, 1971’s ‘Freedom Flight’ and 1974’s ‘Inspiration Information’. The records, essentially crafted as a one-man band, floored Sly Stone, gave The Brothers Johnson their most enduring hit (‘Strawberry Letter 23’) and predated the stylistic synthesist Prince by half a decade.

Shuggie Otis, son of the rhythm and blues bandleader Johnny Otis, was a guitar prodigy, cutting sessions with Frank Zappa and Al Kooper whilst still a teenager. AGMP are proud to present the legendary Shuggie Otis in concert with his full USA band.

New Show: Alsarah & The Nubatones

Described by The Guardian as “the new star of Nubian pop” Alsarah & The Nubatones will bring their blend of East African sounds, live instrumentations and attitude to the Hare & Hounds and Birmingham for the first time on Thursday 23rd March.

Alsarah & The Nubatones came together out of a collective love for Nubian music and a genuine belief that Soul transcends all cultural and linguistic barriers. Their one-of-a-kind expression has been called “East African retro pop.” But that tag only scratches the surface: In their hands, the music pulses, breathes and comes alive with a mix of tradition and contemporary influences. Born out of many dinner conversations between Alsarah and Rami El Aasser about Nubian ‘songs of return’, modern migration patterns and the cultural exchanges between Sudan and Egypt a common love for the richness of pentatonic sounds, and shared migration experiences, expanded the conversation to include Armenian – American Oud player Haig Manouki- and French born Togo raised bass player Mawuena Kodjovi. The Proper Ornaments Next Tuesday at the H&H

This Is Tmrw welcome The Proper Ornaments to the H&H on Tuesday 24th January.

Proper Ornaments is the project of James Hoare (Ultimate Painting, Veronica Falls) and Max Oscarnold (Toy, Pink Flames). The band germinated slowly from their friendship, which began when Max distracted James from shop-keeping, as his then girlfriend attempted to steal shoes. Max was freshly arrived in London from Buenos Aires; helped out with a plane ticket by Andrew Loog Oldham as it happens, to escape a drug-lead implosion of a previous band and a family member’s plan to have him sectioned. The chance meeting blossomed into an epicurean riot of luminous highs and cold, dismal crashes that conversely produced music that was very well ordered and faintly angelic. New Show: Pumarosa

We’re pleased to announce that Live Nation will be bringing Pumarosa to the H&H on Monday 17th April.

Pumarosa are a five-piece band from London, whose music has been described as “industrial spiritual” and brings together the brooding, heavier songwriting of PJ Harvey or Patti Smith with the groove-led and nocturnal electronics of The Knife and Cocteau Twins. Check out the video for their latest single ‘Honey’ below;

New Show: DJ Format & Abdominal

We’re pleased to announce that Freestyle will be brining DJ Format & Abdominal Live back to the H&H on Friday 12th May.

For fourteen years, DJ Format and rapper Abdominal have been entertaining crowds from Toronto to the UK. Now the hip-hop stars are back at it in 2017 with their new album Still Hungry and a 16-date UK tour, which includes a show at London’s legendary venue Electric Ballroom in Camden.

The new album comes off the heels of a wildly successful UK winter tour in 2015 that commemorated ten years since their last performance together in the country. The tour quickly sold out in several cities, which cemented the idea of getting back in the studio to create their first full-length album together. While they both have collaborated on each other’s solo records, Still Hungry marks their first joint album.

The brand new LP boasts the best of what they each bring to the hip-hop community: funky, up-tempo and slick beats, coupled with intelligent, savvy lyrics. The LP also showcases a grittier, harder sound, reflecting the maturity of the two, giving their audience some head-bobbing bangers that could rock any concert hall. The spring tour will welcome back DJ Format & Abdominal into the flourishing hip-hop scene with a bag full of brand new tracks and a longer than ever set list.

Advance £12.50 tickets go on sale this Friday at 9am, you can get hold of yours by clicking here.
