New Show: The Skatalites

We’re pleased to announce that AGMP will be bringing The Skatalites to the H&H on Thursday 17th November.

The Skatalites began performing in Jamaica in 1964. The band became legendary, backing all the developing artists of the day, such as Toots and The Maytals, Prince Buster and The Wailers featuring Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. These groups were all recording on the new beat called ska, which had an infectious rhythm that was catching on like wildfire. Eventually, the beat slowed down into rocksteady, and then reggae. This wildfire spread unstoppably around the world, developing into a huge musical tree with many stylistic branches, including lovers rock, dub, dancehall/ ragga, ska-punk,, and others.

Since reforming they have not stopped thrilling audiences in every corner of the globe. Even after more than 50 years, and various lineup changes as members leave one stage for another, the band continues to perform and record new music in the inimitable Jamaican style, like only they can. New Show: The Low Anthem

We’re pleased to announce that Moseley Folk Festival will be bringing The Low Anthem to the H&H on Sunday 13th November.

Following a 2011 tour in support of their extraordinary Smart Flesh album, The Low Anthem returned to Providence to begin searching for a unique new studio space. Their quixotic quest ultimately led to The Columbus, a local theatre built in 1926 as a vaudeville house and shuttered since 2009, “Opening Soon” promised on the marquee. A large vacant room designed for maximum acoustics, The Columbus offered everything The Low Anthem was looking for – an ideal studio space to begin recording their next album as well as a concert hall unlike any other in the Providence area. Dubbing their new studio as the true life “Eyeland,” the duo immediately set about exploring its sonic capabilities, experimenting with every bizarre phenomenon of sound they could find. Eyeland marks the Low Anthem’s fourth full-length recording and first new music since 2011’s Smart Flesh. An unprecedented collection of multi-dimensional future folk crafted with true vision and emotional depth, Eyeland follows an extraordinary five-year journey for The Low Anthem. What began as a “vague and rather abstract” short story by co-founder/singer/guitarist Ben Knox Miller became real life as Low Anthem immersed themselves in the creation of their own Eyeland Studios, developing Providence’s once obsolete Columbus Theatre into an innovative recording space and live concert venue. New Show: King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard

We’re pleased to announce that This Is Tmrw in association with Killer Wave will be bringing King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard to the H&H on Wednesday 7th September.

Although they formed in 2011 in Melbourne, Australia, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s sense of unfettered sonic exploration makes them easy to mistake for a forgotten-about-relic of the psych explosion of the ’60s. With a far-out sound that, at times, feels barely held together, the band evoke the eclectic rock experimentation of Frank Zappa’s early work with the Mothers of Invention as they follow their musical flights of fancy wherever they might go, and letting the rest just fall into place on its own. New Show: Bentley Rhythm Ace

After stealing the show at this year’s Lunar Festival we’re delighted to be welcoming Bentley Rhythm Ace (Live) to the H&H on Friday 12th August.

Bentley Rhythm Ace formed in Birmingham in 1996 when ex Pop Will Eat Itself bassist Richard March and DJ Michael Stokes discovered a shared love of obscure, oddball and eccentric tunes. Utilising lo-fi cut and paste sampling techniques combined with analogue synths and some wild turntable action their debut EP was picked up by Fatboy Slim’s Brighton based Skint records and released to widespread acclaim.

The BRA live show added Fuzz Townshend on drums and James Atkin (ex EMF vocalist) on keyboards and the latter years of the 90s saw BRA firmly established as festival favourites with appearances at Glastonbury, Reading, V, T in the Park, Montreux Jazz and Fuji Rock amongst many others. Their irreverent approach mixed with big beats, thundering bass, wild synths and esoteric samples proved to be a hit with fans and critics alike. 1998 saw Bentley Rhythm Ace crowned “Best Dance Act” in that year’s NME awards

Their eponymous debut album was given a worldwide release after the Bentleys signed to Parlophone records and the band toured extensively in the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia and USA. As well as releasing a highly regarded DJ mix album on Ministry of Sound, and releasing a second album for Parlophone (featuring vocals from Black Grape/Ruthless Rap Assassins frontman Kermit), BRA also produced well received remixes for the Beastie Boys and Supergrass as well as soundtracking several TV shows and adverts.

2016 sees the 20th anniversary of the release of the hit single “Bentley’s Gonna Sort You Out” and the full original live line up are looking forward to a series of live shows throughout the summer. Check out the video below;

Support on the night comes from Cut La Roc and Michael Valentine West (Live). Advance £12 tickets including a very limited ‘4 for £40’ group ticket offer are on sale now. Get hold of yours here.

Angelic Upstarts This Saturday at the H&H

AGMP Concerts bring legendary punk band Angelic Upstarts to the H&H this Saturday 18th June 2016.

Angelic Upstarts formed way back in 1977 and were a working class punk band with strong anti-fascist views and beliefs. Influenced by bands such as The Clash and The Sex Pistols, The Angelic Upstarts are a meeting of working class ideology and musical aspiration. Lead vocalist Mensi was always liable to provoke reaction, his lyrics making much of his working class roots, and lashing out at police and politicians.

The Angelic Upstarts launched their punk crusade with the independently released double A sided single ‘The Murder of Liddle Towers’ and “Police Oppression” in 1978. It’s attack on police brutality earned them an early patron in Sham 69’s Jimmy Pursey, who chased a similar constituency of disaffected working-class fans. The band then signed to Warner Brothers, Pursey producing the L.P. ‘Teenage Warning’ (1979). With the UK hit singles, ‘I’m An Upstart’ and ‘Teenage Warning’ (both 1979), they focused on the plight of the working class. The band went on to release a number of successful albums and minor hit singles before splitting in 1983.
