Matthew and the Atlas to play Hare & Hounds

Matthew and the Atlas is Matthew Hegarty. After two EPs of dreamy, textured Americana on Communion Records(the label’s first ever releases back in 2011) and a subsequent year of touring in Europe and the US, Hegarty retreated home – and to his sometime day job as a landscape gardener – to mull over the songs developing in his head and how best to present them to the world.

In the summer of 2013, he went into the studio and, in a short burst, recorded what will be the much anticipated debut Matthew and the Atlas album (due in spring 2014 on Communion Records). To celebrate Matthew hits the road this April, calling at Birmingham’s Hare & Houndson Tues 22nd.

“Tunes that possess the dusty, muscular appeal of Springsteen” – MOJO

“Hegarty’s earthy odes to heartbreak and deliverance have a classic quality … absolutely spellbinding” – The Independent

“The new hope” – London Evening Standard

This is Tmrw Bring Speedy Ortiz to the H&H this Thursday

This Thursday 13th February This is Tmrw bring Western Massachusetts’ Speedy Ortiz to the Hare & Hounds main stage.

On their debut full-length, Speedy Ortiz manage a bit of magic by conjuring the spirits of classic American indie rock, while twisting those ghosts into new shapes. It’s easy to hear the influences of Helium, Jawbox, and Chavez on this album, as well as nods to their contemporaries including Grass is Green, Pile, and Roomrunner. Sweet vocal harmonies run up against gnarly distortion, aided by basic, chunky bass parts and heavy, fill-laden drums. Check out the video for their single ‘No Below’ here;
