PRS FOR MUSIC HONOURS UB40’S FIRST GIG

The world’s most successful reggae band – UB40 – is to be honoured by a PRS for Music Heritage Award.

A special plaque will be erected in Kings Heath, Birmingham where the original group Robin Campbell (guitar/vocals), Brian Travers (saxophone), James Brown (drums), Earl Falconer (bass guitar), Norman Hassan (percussion), Ali Campbell (guitar/vocals), Michael Virtue (keyboards) and Astro (trumpet) first performed, at the Hare & Hounds on 9 February 1979.

PRS for Music set up the Heritage Award in 2009 to recognise the unusual ‘performance birthplaces’ of famous bands and artists. UB40 is the eighth band to be given the honour of receiving the permanent plaque.

The band and its members Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, James Brown, Earl Falconer, Norman Hassan and Astro will be there to see the plaque unveiled in Kings Heath on Tuesday October 4th at 11.30am

PRS for Music Chairman, Guy Fletcher OBE said: “It’s an honour and a pleasure for us to commemorate the site of the first UB40 gig with a PRS for Music Heritage Award.  UB40 has made an incredible contribution to the music scene in a career spanning three decades and they are still going strong.  The much-loved band has placed more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, achieved considerable international success and sold over 70 million records – a superb achievement.”

Robin Campbell said: “I’m humbled that the birthplace of UB40 has been chosen to be marked in this way. It’s a pleasure to return to the place where we first performed back in 1979.”

Adam Reagan, Owner of the Hare & Hounds, said: “We are delighted that such an important moment of UB40’s history will be recorded at Hare & Hounds, a venue that is now a base for some of the area’s best up and coming artists.”

UB40 has had numerous hits in both the UK and internationally including “Food For Thought”, “One in Ten”, “Red Red Wine”, “Kingston Town” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love”.

Anyone who was present at the first gig and is interested in attending the plaque unveiling ceremony or has photos of the performance should contact heritageplaque@prsformusic.com and will receive an official invite.

Monday

My Disco (Melbourne/AUS) & PTTRNS (Köln) & Backwards – My Disco have spent nearly a decade defining and refining their sound in a way that defies rock music’s most enduring tropes. Each new album finds them subtracting a little more, applying minimalist instincts to relentless, stripped-bare post-punk grooves. The result is a hypnotic, almost subconscious body music that lives and breathes with the persistent repetition of a heartbeat and the menacing precision of a sniper.

Tuesday

8Bit Lounge presents: 8Bit Lounge with Lonnie BangfordBack on the attack with more console and arcade fun. This time seeing the return of the KICK OFF 2 tournaments, and our very special guest LONNIE BANGFORD for a splendid chipcore and 8Bit chop up set. We have an impressive array of other consoles for you, including PS2, networked DOOM, MAME arcade simulator with hundreds of games and old skool joy pads, plus tons more. Extra level of arcade anthems, a power up of 8bit hi-jacks, and the end of level baddy with some robotic electro.

Saturday

Flylife presents: Dub Pistols DJ&MC feat Barry Ashworth & Rodney P – While their live show continued to whip up unbridled mayhem and build a healthy worldwide following through relentless touring, the records took their own path, moving swiftly on from initial big beat whoopee into celebrations of two lifetimes of musical obsessions, the reggae-punk implications of the Dub Pistols moniker just the launch-pad. The Dub Pistols’ punky-reggae party rages on, now doing damage with one of the year’s most potent musical brews, firing sugar-coated bullets at any recession depression. Their time has surely come.

This is Tmrw presents: Victories At Sea / Free School / Patterns

On the back of a breath taking slot at Off The Cuff festival, we welcome Victories At Sea to the This is Tmrw stage again. Described by many as a hybrid of Factory Floors dynamics and The National at their most anthemic, we’d add to this the dancefloor appeal of early Hot Chip and the rhythms of Movement era New Order. This is fake DIY – ‘Redefining ‘anthemic’ to suit their own brilliant mould’

PTTRNS (ger, altin village & mine)

Four smart ass hipshakers from Cologne stole some congas in the park from a hippie who doesn’t know how to play it properly to save the world. Therefor PTTRNS mingle some tight percussion with 80s influenced post punk a la gang of four in an homage to old funk legends like curtis mayfield.

to sum it up:
They totally know how to shake your bones.
