It's a psych folk freak out!

Thanks to those who came down to Hare and Hounds for Capsule’s first show of the year, Kayo Dot – a pretty impressive percussive close to the set i’m sure you’ll agree (tin cans and buckets galore!). Piccies to come soon.

The next Capsule show will be a psych folk freak out with three stellar bands who bridge psychedelia with more pop sensibilities.

Woods have been gathering momentum since 2006 with their spooky campfire folk and noisy interludes.

Spectrals’ equal love for 60s girl groups and distorted tape collages creates a fine blend of guitar pop

The Doozer was profiled in last month’s Wire, as a key player in the ‘Alternative Cambridge’ scene, full of feaky, underground experimentation. His vocal work has been likened to Syd Barrett and Thurston Moore is a fan!

Wednesday

Capsule presents: Kayo Dot + Bilbao Syndrome

First Birmingham appearance of Brooklyn-based mavericks Kayo Dot! The constantly-shifting soundscapes take in elements of jazz and classical music and filter them through a Zorn-esque modern composition aesthetic, and a command of dynamic range which belies founder Toby Driver’s background in heavy music. The resulting pieces are executed with such ease and erudition that any attempt to tease out the shreds of the band’s influences becomes futile and unnecessary as one becomes lost in the disturbing beauty and sheer wonder.

Thursday

Miles Perhower presents: “Rein In The Chaos”

An evening of fine noise and words, featuring an array of intriguing acts such as Miss Halliwell, The Courtesy Group, The Gruber and other mysterious players…

Come say Hi!

SFP Visits Mexico!

As part of a new series of SFP events taking place over the coming year, we’ll be exploring the origins of Soul Food and how countries around the world have their own interpretations of what Soul Food is and means.

Our first event is curated by our very own Martin Herrera who hails from Mexico’s east coast. Martin will be bringing the family in and cooking up a feast of homely Mexican fare.

This is a great opportunity to taste real Mexican food cooked by people who have spent their whole lives surrounded by it.

Dinner will be hosted in the Hare and Hounds back bar and sittings will be at 7pm for a 7.30 start.

This is a bookings only event and the set menu is priced at £15 each.

Tuesday

Birmingham Promoters & Metropolis presents: Esben and the Witch / Trophy Wife / (silver) souvenirs have forged a sound that springs forth from minds soaked in influences far and beyond any standard set of musical touchstones. Nature and literature, art and science, history and the unknown – the trio eschews the everyday for inspiration drawn from sources weird and wonderful.

Wednesday

World Unlimited presents: ahab

Folk-flavoured country-rock quartet ahab share a love of American-influenced music but are very accomplished songwriters. ahab’s music has a laid-back swing but with an undercurrent of indie edginess, their impressive repertoire of self-penned material is influenced by Paul Simon, Nick Drake, and Gram Parsons among others.

Birmingham Promoters presents: Harry’s Gym / Bungalows / Rubicava

Harrys Gym have a presence and sound that could easily leap the Fjords to international note.” – Clash magazine. ‘Like leaves on the ground, but rather snow in the air, swirling and massive, weightless and fragile’ … is the most apt metaphor to describe the angelically haunted voice of Harry’s Gym vocalist Anne-Lise Frokedal. With a liking to Garbage, Blonde Redhead and The Knife, the Norwegian quartet are “wonderfully soaring, dreamlike prog-pop that’s more northern sorrow than Northern Soul – but not too oppressively bleak.” (Guardian, Band Of The Day)…

Thursday

B’ham Promoters & Heavenly Recordings presents: Sea Of Bees / Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou / James WalbourneSea of Bees is the musical project of Julie Ann Bee, or Jules as everyone calls her. She sings, writes the songs, and plays lots of musical instruments. Her debut album “Songs for the Ravens” sounds folky in some places, gauzy and ambient in others and twee as hell in still others, but beautiful throughout, and a potent reminder that emotional virtue is an artist’s most precious commodity.

DJ Psykhomantus presents: Rest In Power: J Dilla & Baatin of Slum Village

A night in tribute to life and work of Slum Village’s Jay Dee aka J Dilla & Titus “Baatin” Glover. Detroit’s finest. Music provided by DJs: VJ E Double D, DJ Roc 1 & DJ Psykhomantus and hosted by Mad Flow – http://www.psykhomantus.blogspot.com

Friday

Fri 11thSugarfoot Stomp Valentines Special –  a good old fashioned love-in like they did in the summer of ’29 (it just wasn’t as widely reported as it was in the 60s) and we’ll be reintroducing the very popular drunken fumble corner as well as the heartbreak half hour! Come along with your sweetheart or if you haven’t got one you’ll certainly be overcome with amour by the evening’s end!

The Source presents: Tango and Ratty

A Hip Hop DJ since the mid 80’s, Ratty had already earned his reputation as a big name DJ by the early 90’s, playing major events up and down the country and becoming well known for his choppy style of mixing, scratching, and his selection of upfront music. At the same time, Tango (also a Hip Hop DJ and one time DMC competitor) began DJing at venues such as Shelleys in Stoke on Trent and the two soon discovered they shared very similar musical tastes, and struck up a friendship…

Saturday

Sunday

The band cite influences as diverse as My Bloody Valentine, New Order, Deerhunter, Scott Walker, Neil Young, Sonic Youth and Arthur Russell, though Bowman has stated that the group has never made specific plans pertaining to their songwriting. Woods support confirmed

Woods blew us away when they played for us as part of the Shred Yr Face tour in 2009. Stunningly crafted songs take on a whole new direction live, with unexpected tangents, twists and turns.

I’ve been hearing the Spectrals track, Peppermint pretty much on repeat on 6music, so looking forward to hearing it live. He makes blissed out, disjointed guitar pop – a perfect support for Woods.

Disjointed psych experimentation comes from The Doozer (Slitbreeze), who is gaining much comparison to Syd Barrett for his vocal style.

Tickets for this show are available here, or in person at Swordfish Records and Polar Bear.
