One of the most brightly tipped artists of 2011 comes to Birmingham’s Hare & Hounds on Wed 23rd Feb and Coventry’s Kasbah on Sat 5th Mar. Unlike a lot of acts who vanish as soon as the hype machine builds them up, Woon is a true talent, and with any justice will be rewarded with much deserved success this year.
The Kasbah is perhaps a surprising venue for an artist’s first major tour, but having hosted Pulled Apart By Horses already this year and with the likes of Crocodiles visiting soon the nightclub is fast becoming the place for hot new music. Hare and Hounds also continues to play host to stunning artists just before they hit the big-time.
Jamie Woon brings a radically different sound to the aforementioned bands but presents a similar idea to the table, a reinterpretation of thirty or forty year old popular genres. His first single Night Air demonstrates this perfectly, his soul influenced vocals overlaying a moody dub soundscape to create dark yet soothing sounds of detachment.
Perhaps the current act closest to Woon’s style is James Blake, though Blake’s work is much more closely related the ideas of dubstep. Woon’s voice, on the other hand, is the focus here, and is pushed much further forward in the mix, yet the beats he sings over are just as hypnotic and beautiful as Blake’s. Woon is certainly THE one to watch this year.
