Teeth of the Sea / Health and Efficiency / Victories at Sea

January 31st, 2012  |  Published in Listings

Supersonic Festival & Capsule present a night of blissed out, experimental psych

Teeth of the Sea is a psychedelic rock band from London. The group (Sam Barton, Mike Bourne, John Hirst and Jimmy Martin) were inspired to forge forth in search of oblivion unknown after experiencing an epiphany during a Wolf Eyes gig.

After the release of their January 2009 album ‘Orphaned By The Ocean’ on Rocket Recordings John Hirst left the band, to be replaced by Mat Colegate. After a tour with Oneida, an appearance at the Offset Festival, and November’s ‘Holy Trinity’ tour with Gnod and Thought Foms, Teeth Of The Sea released the twenty-four-minute-long ‘Hypnoticon’ EP in January 2010. and their second album, ‘Your Mercury’ was released in November 2010. 2011 saw them tour with British Sea Power, Esben & The Witch and Parts & Labor, as well as playing the Supersonic, Standon Calling and Supernormal Festivals, along with dates with Circle, Crippled Black Phoenix and Vessels. . A third album is planned for later in 2012, also to be released on Rocket Recordings.

Health & Efficiency

Their music traverses an encyclopaedia of influences; psych, folk, no wave noise and electronic perhaps being some of the more predominant. They utilise banjo, two basses, two guitars, synths, samplers and more effects and loop pedals than it’s reasonable for one band to need.

Victories At Sea are an experimental 3 piece from the Midlands, citing influences as wide and diverse as Slowdive, Boards of Canada, and M83 through to more unadulterated alternatives such as Echo and The Bunnymen, New Order and mid 80’s Cure. By using various electronics and drum loops live, their traditional set up is enveloped by resonating layers of sound cast against the backdrop of the city at night.

“Mitchell has created something joyful and witty that yields more with every listen” THE GUARDIAN, UK *****

“Hadestown is nothing short of incredible, whether you extract individual tracks like ‘Wedding Song” or listen to the endearing tale as an artfully rollicking whole. Mitchell has always been good, but “Hadestown” is her Odyssey” NME 9/10

Heidi Spencer & the Rare Birds + Allie Moss

March 8th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

Heidi Spencer is a true-to-life troubadour and self-described eccentric, the songs on “Under Streetlight Glow” are pared-down to the essentials. One can feel a chill wind blow slightly through Spencer’s guitar and piano chords while her distinctive and inviting voice provides warmth for those cold nights the Milwaukee native knows so well.

Allie Moss is a New Jersey singer, vocal coach and guitarist, her song Corner created a wonderful singalong lullaby which  was used for BT Infinity very successful TV commercial. Her new album ‘Late Bloomer’ gets an official launch for this tour.

Alessi’s Ark

February 26th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

“Oh, by now, I must have grown”, Alessi Laurent-Marke croons beautifully, four songs into her stunning sophomore album Time Travel. And hasn’t she just – not yet 21 but already a seasoned pro, having recorded her debut album aged just 17, with members of Bright Eyes, and touring with the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and Brighton cult faves the Willkommen Collective. Time Travel is the first Alessi’s Ark album since signing to Bella Union, where her acutely melodic and exquisitely tender folk-pop charms haven’t just grown; they’ve blossomed into something extraordinarily mature.

Intimacy is the key not just to Time Travel’s sound but also its soul. “This is a collection of songs that have mostly grown from travelling and touring, away from the familiarity of home, family and friends.”

The experience of recording Time Travel – in Brighton’s Electric Studios with Wilkommen Collective’s Marcus Hamblett and at Bryn Derwen in Wales with David Wrench (Beth Orton, Bat for Lashes) – gave the album its name. “In Brighton, we did 12 hour days and had no idea what was going on in the outside world. In Wales, there was no phone signal, and it felt far away from everything”.

The 12-track Time Travel keeps alternating between anxiety and joy, between childlike wishes and grown-up truths – how change can force us apart but also signify growth. ‘Run’ acknowledges that you must let friends go, “to chase their dreams, even if it takes them away from you”. ‘Wire’ imagines a man who knows he hasn’t chased his dreams, and time is running out.

The album’s one cover version, Lesley Gore’s 1965 smash ‘Maybe I Know’, is a classic from the ’60s girl-group glory days of teen angst disguised as sweet and innocent pop. “On the surface, the song is very pretty but the lyrics are very sad and dark”.

Such is Alessi’s ability to look for the good in others and hold out hope for the rest of us. Oh, and one more fact; with her mum, nan and aunt, she runs a little cottage industry knitting bags for every item sold through her website. Where indeed has Alessi landed from? Be prepared to be transported.
