Alternative Dubstep Orchestra / The Frenzies

September 21st, 2011  |  Published in Listings

THE HONEYCOMB CLUB is making a comeback for the Autumn to bring you a very special night of entertainment.

ALTERNATIVE DUBSTEP ORCHESTRA

“This high powered take on a conventional orchestra has expanded the minds of everyone who has cared to listen. From masterful, original compositions featuring both traditional musicians and turntablists, to heavy hitting gritty covers like Cockney Thug by Rusk…o and Red by Laid Blak, this is live Dubstep for 2011.”

ADO, fresh from their first summer tour, plan to hit the deck hard at this event, showcasing new tracks alongside some crowd favourites which have been getting audiences rocking across the UK since the start of this project last winter.

This is alternative live dubstep with an orchestral twist, celebrating and melting many genres and influences, bringing turntablism and traditional musicianship together in their own unique way. This collective features musicians and turntablists from Birmingham who have come together from all walks of music to make a distinct wall of sound which gets any party rockin’.

THE FRENZIES

The Frenzies offer kitsch, sometimes surreal,  Tarantino-esque surf rock tones to any party and with legendary Birmingham frontman DAZ DOLCZECH as host, we know this band are going to get the party started. This is rock n roll with a modern twist and perfect for the Honeycomb Club saturday night soundtrack.

Honeycomb Club Presents: Alternative Dubstep Orchestra / Velvet Texas Cannonball / Sam Redmore

February 10th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

The Honeycomb Club, after launching in December of last year, has quickly established itself as a quality midweek music night celebrating world class musicians, DJs and visuals alike.

The March session has live resident dubstep outfit ALTERNATIVE DUBSTEP ORCHESTRA alongside psychedelic-rock-blues outfit VELVET TEXAS CANNONBALL (think The Doors meets Cream – Hammond organ-tastic!). If that wasn’t enough, Sam Redmore will also be popping by to spin some tunes – but expect something a little different from his Freestyle residency sets, as we blend through musical styles. DJ SWITCH will be turntablist supremo with the orchestra, alongside THE DOCTOR.
As per usual, expect collaborations galore and some very special new arrangements!

Resident DJs The Doctor and Malicious DJ will also be adding to this month’s soundscape, with visuals provided by Blendstate.

And of course, expect to see some awesome local music videos.

WE DON’T DO FLYERS OR POSTERS BECAUSE OF POSTER WARS, COUNCIL JOBSWORTHS, ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS, LACK OF EFFECTIVENESS IN A WORLD OVERRUN WITH PROMO PAMPHLETS, AND MOST OF ALL….BECAUSE WE WANT TO BUILD A GREAT AUDIENCE ON WORD OF MOUTH…so on that note, tell all your friends! The first 3 events have had a fantastic crowd of music lovers. Come and be part of the next one. The audience is AS important as the music.

Don’t forget to get in early – Door open at 8pm. Venue closes at 11:30pm. Come and join us in this midweek celebration of musical goodness…

Tickets will be on sale from Friday 11th February – early bird deals available. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Tickets are £5 advanced (through Ticket Sellers) and £8 on the door.

Tango and Ratty

The Source presents Tango and Ratty

Friday 11th Feb

Tango and Ratty – 2hr 90-94 journey

Gershwin (40th Birthday special)
Glenn Aston (Raindance)
DJ-X (HOG/PCM)

For their 1st event of 2011 and to celebrate  Gershwin’s 40th bday, The Source presents two legendary Old Skool DJ/producers – Tango and Ratty.

A Hip Hop DJ since the mid 80’s, Ratty had already earned his reputation as a big name DJ by the early 90’s, playing major events up and down the country and becoming well known for his choppy style of mixing, scratching, and his selection of upfront music. At the same time, Tango (also a Hip Hop DJ and one time DMC competitor) began DJing at venues such as Shelleys in Stoke on Trent and the two soon discovered they shared very similar musical tastes, and struck up a friendship.

Following the release of Tango’s first EP “Impact” on DJ SS’ new Formation Records imprint and the subsequent remixes, the two got together in the studio to produce the now classic “Tales from the Darkside /Final Conflict.” on their own label. A remix EP followed, featuring Mickey Finn and Bay-B-Kane, which continues to smash dancefloors to this day. Tango went on to produce several more tracks for Formation, including the reggae influenced “Project 1” and the seminal “Future Followers,” whilst Ratty released his “Taste of Things to Come” EP which cemented the pairs reputation as premier purveyors of the darkside style of rave/hardcore.

As Ratty’s DJ work continued to flourish taking him to the USA, Europe and Australia, Tango notched up a host of classic remixes for various labels, including Moving Shadow, Suburban Base and Formation, as well as producing the club-smashing re-work of Dance Conspiracy’s “Dub War” (which received airplay from the legendary John Peel). After a brief break, the pair reunited in the studio in 2002, and a string of strong new material followed, including releases for Timeless, L-Plates, Function and Basement Records whilst Tango also produced a stream of Breakbeat releases with DJ Pulse, including remix work for Stanton Warriors (“Da Virus”) and more Radio 1 airplay, this time from Pete Tong. More recently, Tango and Ratty (along with Randall, Outrage and others) have been at the forefront of the retro-futuristic Jungle Techno revival, J-Tek with the Steel Fingers label.

Add to this the fact that it’s Source resident and co-promoter Gershwin’s 40th birthday and one of Ratty’s last ever Old Skool sets, this promises to be one to remember.

Those of you that have attended the previous Source events with DJ Sy, 2 Bad Mice, Trevor Fung, Nookie and Doc Scott will know what to expect – great music, great people, quality sound and lighting and above all, one fantastic vibe just like the old days!

Advance tickets £5+bf – MOTD

STOP FOR THE DROP BIRTHDAY SPECIAL!

Each and every month STOP FOR THE DROP will be inviting some of the Country’s finest Guest DJ’S / Collectors and all round good guys to Dig deep into their musical archives to bring you an evening of true aural delight! be it Northern/Modern soul / 60′s R&B / Dub roots Reggae, latin boogaloo, Classic House, Balearic, Rare groove – whatever the Selection…. the objective is simply to share in a shuffle, and enjoy a much needed fun night out, without all the pretence, that sadly most places now offer!
Taking place in one of Birmingham’s most established Venues – HARE & HOUNDS – STOP FOR THE DROP invites friends, both old and new to come and join us for a good old fashioned quality get together!

For my Birthday Special I am chuffed to bits to Welcome to Birmingham two of the UK’s finest DJ’s

First up one of the Founding members of the legendary BOYS OWN DJ/FANZINE/CLUB collective….. TERRY FARLEY

I am sure you all know about Terry and his importance in the Evolution of the UK house music Scene, he has promised to Dig deep into that extensive Knowledge of his and pull out some corkers for us!

Here is a great interview with the man himself:

http://www.djhistory.com/interviews/terry-farley

Next up Heading up to the Midlands… a Great DJ of blissed out Balearica and Deep house responsible for some of my fave Sunset moments both as a DJ and a producer…..
PHIL MISON.

Influenced by listening to legendary chill out DJ Jose Padilla, Phil started his DJ career at London’s Milk Bar in 1991, playing chilled Balearic warm up sets. A chance meeting there with Jose would lead to a two year residency at Ibiza’s Cafe Del Mar, sound tracking a thousand sunsets with his vast collection of sun kissed records. It was his sets there that led him to play at Full Circle, Bugged Out and to become Leftfields tour DJ.

It was this huge knowledge of the chill-out genre that earned Mison a chance to put out his first compilation ‘Original Chill Out’ in 1995. With its beatless, mood-friendly approach to mixing electronic music, it was something of a groundbreaking collection. Since then he has gone on to release a further 12 compilations (including four volumes of the hugely popular ‘Real Ibiza’ series), record with friend Pete Herbert under the Reverso 68 guise and in 2004, release his debut artist album under the now familiar Cantoma moniker. Phil has also recently been invited to play at Harvey’s 39 Hotel in Hawaii and in the last year played at Horse Meat Disco, Fabric, Secret Sundaze, Disco Bloodbath and APT in New York.

I do Appreciate there is a Door Charge for this event but please note I am making a Donation to Charity for this night from the Entry Fee
