Om Unit

January 7th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

UnderThe Counter are back for 2011 and are very Happy to be teaming up with Leftfoot for a series of shows in 2011 that are set to blow minds and push the Birmingham electronic music community into the new year with a bang.

We are kicking things off with a very special Friday night show with non other than Om Unit headling proceedings .

…Om Unit aka Jim Coles Has been causing quite a stir in the world of beat and bass culture music of late with big remixes just out for Joker and The Foreign Beggars, the release of his Corridor EP on Plasticians Terrorhythm imprint, and the drop of the 12″ Searching .. which is getting slammed across dancefloors and radio worldwide.

This is a chance to see one of the pioneers of the beat scene play in B’ham for the 1st time. Jim’s heavy bass lines future sounds and heavy dubbed out beats are not be missed !

One of many but with a very distinctive sound, Om Unit has already captured the minds of beat fanatics with his work to date. Style-wise you could say “post-genre” or just “Electronic Beats?”.. Genres are like borders, rapidly becoming obselete when we see the world today as having an ever increasing merging of styles and influences. put simply, its electronic music.

Jim Coles previously worked under the name 2tall, as a competitive DJ (DMC/ITF etc.) a live performer in the UK and in Europe working with turntable and samplers, and producer of several albums including 2007′s “Beautiful Mindz”, a project put together with Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow, other albums include ‘Shifting Tides’ (2004) and ‘The Softer Diagram’ (2008). Beyond that his work with Dented Records led to productions and collaborations with Uk Rap artists Foreign Beggars, Jehst, Kashmere and Kyza, as well as production and turntablist work on the ‘united colours of beggatron’ album (No Holes Barred / No More).

Support for this show comes in the form of Leftfoot and UTC residents

Par Grindvik and Edit Select

January 6th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

Bunka presents…

★★ PAR GRINDVIK ★★

(Stockholm LTD, Drumcode, Spectral Sound)

★★ EDIT SELECT ★★

(Ostgut Ton, CLR, Electric Deluxe)

We are back…

After several setbacks this year with planned guests having to cancel their appearances we will start afresh in 2011 with a killer line-up to set the record straight by bringing in both of these guests on the same bill.

Edit-Select & Par Grindvik lend us their services in an event that signals the sign of things to come for Bunka in the New Year. Both hardened veterans within the Techno community, one from Glasgow & one from Sweden each bringing their unique sound to the Hare & Hounds, in an event that has all the makings of a classic.

Par Grindvik
Pär Grindvik has been an important individual in the Swedish electronic scene since the nineties as record store owner (Illegal Stockholm), label manager and producer. After many years of touring and releases on labels like Drumcode, Spectral Sound and his own label Stockholm LTD (which he created and founded in 2002), he’s become an internationally renowned artist. Over the years he has carved out his own niche, with sets and productions that are consistently inspiring.

Edit-Select
Having began his career as DJ & Producer early at the inception of the Acid-House boom, Glaswegian Tony Scott aka Edit-Select has experimented with various sounds across his impressive body of work. Finding early success as Percy X on the legendary Soma imprint, he soon became a fundamental ingredient in defining the sound of the label with his deep & soulful yet undeniably electronic productions. Fast forward to 2010 & Tony has reinvented himself under the moniker Edit Select and is pushing an altogether more brooding and powerful sound. With huge tracks such as “Bauer” making their way onto the seminal Ost-Gut Ton label, and releases from his own self titled label featuring some of the biggest hitters around, Edit-Select is certainly the type of DJ that will brings it to the crowd.

Matthew Dear (Live Band)

January 6th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

This is Tmrw presents..

MATTHEW DEAR (LIVE BAND)

Matthew Dear released one of the best records of 2010 in ‘Black City’. I think it’s fair to say this album has put him in the same league as the likes of Four Tet and Caribou. Not forgetting his remixes last year, including his re rub of The XX’s – VCR and his live show which has left jaws touching the floor (file under Bowie and LCD Soundsystem)…This show is one of only two solo dates whilst Matthew travels the country supporting Interpol…..We’re so exited to be welcoming him to The Hare and Hounds….This is seriously not a show to be missed..

***** PLEASE NOTE THIS SHOW TAKES PLACE IN VENUE 2 SO CAPACITY IS STRICTLY LIMITED *****

Full Bio:

Depending on whom you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for the Fabric mix series and Get Physical’s Body Language. He maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none—and he’s just hitting his stride.

Matthew Dear’s 2003 full-length Ghostly debut, Leave Luck to Heaven, is a suite of sparse, wickedly funky house laced with Dear’s deep, distinctive vocals, and includes the much-loved single “Dog Days” (voted one of Pitchfork’s Top 100 Songs of the Decade). The record was met with rapturous acclaim from both the dance-music establishment and the critical press, including a four-star review in Rolling Stone. Dear’s 2007 follow-up,

Asa Breed, is a considerable departure from Heaven’s dancefloor excursions, incorporating the polyrhythms of Afrobeat, the irreverent pop sensibilities of Brian Eno, and the austere beauty of Krautrock. More four-stars reviews followed (Q and Mojo magazines), and Dear subsequently began touring with a live three-piece band, Matthew Dear’s Big Hands, in which he acted as frontman, commanding the stage with a Bryan Ferry-like swagger and a gentleman’s grace.

Today, Matthew Dear finds himself in a unique position. His highly anticipated fourth album, 2010’s Black City, is the culmination of years of hard work and experimentation, a darkly playful sound-world that envelops the listener like the arms of a malevolent lover. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear now inhabits a rarefied corner of the musical universe: no longer tethered to any one genre, respected by his peers, and blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy. Now is Matthew Dear’s moment, and it sounds like nothing else.

Leftfoot

January 1st, 2011  |  Published in Promoters

Leftfoot is celebrating it’s 10th year with a series of events throughout 2010. The line-up includes Greg Wilson, Fabio, Mr Scruff, Marlena Shaw, Introducing, Gaslamp Killer, Bonobo, Jazzie B, Jah Shaka, Breakestra & Chali 2NA, Soil & Pimp Sessions, Gilles Peterson & Earl Zinger,  The Pheneomenal Handclap Band, Nosaj Thing, Mount Kimbie, Easy Star All-Stars, Andreya Triana, Norman Jay, Zero 7, Metro Area and more.

Leftfoot was launched at The Medicine Bar (Custard Factory) in January 2000 by Adam Regan & Richard Whittingham. Having travelled the world with Different Drummer Soundsystem, the Birmingham-born DJ’s were keen to recreate the atmosphere and attitude of their favourite European clubs.
Back in 2000, Birmingham was in the grip of two equally horrendous musical forms, the mainstream and completely un- Funky House and the student-friendly, music-by-numbers known as big beat. Leftfoot quickly became a haven for fans of leftfield, soulful music, and guests like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Keb Darge, Jazzanova, Fabio, Gilles Peterson, Carl Craig & Fila Brazillia regularly played to crowds of 7-800 people. The venue quickly gained a reputation as one of the best in the country and nights like Substance, Procreation & Capsule all contributed to it’s growing credibility.

In 2003, Leftfoot was voted “Best Clubnight” on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Radio Show and came runners-up to Co-Op in 2004. And the list of artists that continued to join the dots between house, hip-hop, disco, jazz, funk, soul, reggae, drum&bass, techno, afrobeat & latin, started to grow. Lee Scratch Perry, Roots Manuva, Dego (4-Hero), Ty, Mr Scruff, Jazzy Jeff, Rainer Truby, Daddy G (Massive Attack), Kenny Dope Gonzales, King Britt, Quantic Soul Orchestra & Norman Jay, all featured over the coming years with nights as far afield as Paris, San Francisco, Croatia, Liverpool, London & Nottingham.

Leftfoot now resides in the more intimate surroundings of the Hare & Hounds & Bull’s Head but continues to push underground soul music for the people of Birmingham and beyond.
