Mostly Jazz Fest

Vialka / Kitty Hands

December 3rd, 2010  |  Published in Listings

Vialka hail from deepest France, via everywhere and
nowhere. They are a devilishly high-spirited guitar/drums duo
who tour hard and fast across the world. Their music skips
joyfully across borders, channeling desert blues, Chinese folk
songs, scatter rock and European gypsy song dynamics in a
whirlwind of dervish energy. Their endless gypsy punk folk
rock tales, hard hitting poly-rhythms and yelps and howls
make for a danceable and intoxicating brew.
The dynamic duo of Marylise Frecheville and Eric Boros have been lugging their nomadic turbo folk sound
and modus vivendi all over the planet since the turn of the century, originally as the rhythm section of the
performance striptease jazz-punk trio NNY, and since 2002 as Vialka. They have resided in Switzerland,
Slovenia, Canada, and are currently calling a remote village in France their home between tours. Deriving its
influences from traditional and modern underground music from around the globe, Vialka’s music is based on
the frenetic interaction between Marylise’s syncopated drumming and singing and Eric’s orchestral guitar
playing – and is delivered with ecstatic energy, humor, lust for life, and a sophisticated musical language and
subliminal connection all their own.

Support comes in the form of Kitty Hands - Kitty hands is James on harrys westone and matt on drums. Hairy people playing hairy music….

The Music Room with Ramblin’ Pony, Strumpit, Bernadette O’Grady

Strumpit are:Andy Bucknall – Guitar/Vocals, Madi Stimpson – Guitar/Vocal, Michael Lacoult – Double Bass They were formed in 2008 and have spent the last two years honing their ‘Manouche’ style of Swing Jazz on stage and in the street. Andy and Madi are both accomplished guitarists and it is the interplay between them that has become their unique selling point.

Bernadette O’Grady is an acoustic singer-songwriter from North Ireland, who now lives in West Wales. She began writing and performing songs, whilst living in New York, influenced at the time by both Irish and American artists. Her material ranges from contemporary storytelling to more reflective and soulful songs performed with honest emotion. Bernadette has gained an excellent reputation on the UK acoustic scene for her exceptionally fine songwriting, intricate guitar-playing, and distinctively beautiful vocals. One of her songs was featured in the independent Irish film ‘Just Another Miracle’ and broadcast as part of UTV’s 50th Anniversary Short Film Festival. “She’s Fantastic”, Ulster Television / “Top-drawer singer-songwriter”, Kontra Roots / “Beautiful and intimate music”, Soundbites

Black Mountain / Wolf People

June 8th, 2010  |  Published in Listings

Black Mountain is a Canadian rock band led by Stephen McBean. The band is an amalgamation of the Classic Rock / Blues Rock of Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath with some psychedelic tendencies.

Leader Stephen McBean also heads another similarly-named band, Pink Mountaintops, who are the more experimental side of McBean’s musical abilities. Black Mountain is the front line band for Black Mountain Army. By day, McBean works in a needle-exchange facility for drug addicts, near Vancouver’s infamous Main & Hastings intersection, widely considered to be the heroin capital of Canada, if not North America.

Matt Camirand and Joshua Wells are also in Blood Meridian.

Support comes from Black Mountain’s labelmates WOLF PEOPLE – the first British band to sign to Jagjaguwar who will release their first album proper on October 11.

Steeple represents the emergence of a fully fledged band from the fragmented, haunted bedroom meanderings of their Tidings singles compilation, released earlier this year. Recorded in a converted chicken barn on the grounds of a 17th century Welsh mansion, Steeple takes on a heavier sound while maintaining the arabesque electric guitars, groove-laden drums and ethereal vocals that characterised its predecessor.

Cheerfully aware of the English rock band cliché of “getting it together in the country,” the quartet did it anyway, inspired by the rural isolation of West Wales to conjure shifting rhythms, entrancing folksong and smoke-fogged, riff-stoked jams. From the stuttered, flute-led earworm hook of “Tiny Circle” to the churning, twisted ball of metal that is “One By One From Dorney Reach,”Steeple sounds as massive as the setting in which it was laid to tape and is full of the nuggets that many a rock fan spend lifetimes among crates in search of.

Steeple captures a band in metamorphosis, bridging frontman Jack Sharp’s earlier solo efforts and the speaker-shearing attack developed in concert over the past four years. Now an accomplished live unit, Wolf People have shared stages with the likes of The Besnard Lakes, Dinosaur Jr, Dungen, Endless Boogie, Lightning Dust and Tinariwen.

Proud of their heritage, both musical and cultural, Wolf People’s vision faithfully reflects the myriad environments the group’s members move between — the British countryside and various urban centres (Bedford, London and North Yorkshire) — while offering a universally appreciable set of songs for this age or any other.

Wolf People released their vinyl/digital singles compilation Tidings this February, info here:

And their debut album proper Steeple is due out October 11 on CD/LP/Digital formats:

** Show Cancelled ** Finley Quaye

April 12th, 2010  |  Published in Listings

Maverick, now there’s an overused word. Restless Finley Quaye fits the bill perfectly with a multifaceted, multi ethnic catalogue of music that somehow mashes pure pop to the underground.

He scored a solo record deal with Polydor Records 1994. He began working with Epic/Sony in 1996 and in 1997 he reached the UK Top 20 twice with “Sunday Shining”, and “Even After All”. ‘Sunday Shining’ was classic Finley with its bizarre cross section of influences of Tenor Saw, the Breeders and the Zombies mashed together. His debut album Maverick A Strike is a masterpiece capturing the sunshine vibe of primetime Marley but placing it firmly in the concrete of mid nineties bohemian Britain and making it pure pop. winning Finley a Brit for Best Male Artist in ’98.

Finley’s following two albums are even more musically satisfying and challenging and were released on Epic, Vanguard (2000) and Much More Than Much Love (2004). Quaye is readying several albums. The ‘Pound for Pound’ EP was released Digitally, during the summer of 2009 following ‘The Best Of The Epic Years’ that was released on Sony/BMG (2009). ‘Pound for Pound’ the album and ‘Sound for sound’ (the dub version of the album) will be released digitally late 2009. ‘Straight From Country’ a country album, ‘Hot Rushes’ an R&B Album and ‘Pinnacle’ the Roots album are each and individually prepared for release in 2010.

Burnside - This fully charged Brummie 5-piece are a bare knuckle , unhinged explosion of excitement ! Rock ‘n’ Roll extraordinaires with craggy blues undertones guaranteed to keep the Birmingham Indie rock n roll kids a jumping, salivating and causing royal mayhem to the sound that is …..Burnside

The Duplicates (Rhythm & Blues)

March 24th, 2010  |  Published in Listings

The Duplicates – making a return trip up North from their London home town, The Duplicates will be suitably marvellous as ever with their combination of well known theme tunes and soul/rhythm and blues instrumentals.

Between the three of them they’ve worked with Iggy Pop, The Ruts, Madness, Kirsty Macoll, Death in Vegas, Paul Weller, Roger Daltry, Edwyn Collins etc. etc.  Their previous visit to this venue was a complete sell out with a dance floor filled with all sorts of wonderful moves.

The Rivers Presley Set – are a two piece band that hail from Birmingham and are currently recording for the second city’s “Coldrice” label.  Expect an impressive, seedy, lurid, garage/blues sound that is almost instantly addictive.

In between live bands special guest DJs Richard March (PWEI and BRA) and It’s A Happening will be playing rather nice 45′s!

All proceeds to Teenage Cancer Trust.
