SFP Visits Australia

The Hare and Hounds // Thursday January 26th

To celebrate Australia day this year, Soul Food will be bringing in Under The Counter’s Head Honcho and all round great chef Keith Holland to the kitchen to curate a one off evening exploring the diverse cuisine of Australia.

Australia’s cuisine takes influence from the abundant local produce, vast farms across the country (some the size of the UK) and the oriental cuisine that dominates lots of local restaurants…

With such a diverse and growing culture, you can expect the unexpected with this tasting. We’ll also be working on bringing in some bespoke wines from various wine regions across Australia.

£20 per head for 5 Courses

40 seats available

Bookings Only // Tickets available from here

CASIO KIDS – http://casiokids.com/

Afrobeat percussion, nu disco in the vein of their contemporaries Prins Thomas and Todd Terje, twee pop a la Bell and Sebastian and even some of the low end frequencies of dubstep, Casio Kids are hands down one of the best live bands we’ve ever hosted.

The newest record (released Jan 2012) takes influence from ‘Vogue’ era Madonna, cosmic disco and the electro funk of earlier tunes ‘Fot I Hose’.

We’ll be putting the band on the big main room stage with one of (if not the) best P.As in the city, so expect it to sound absolutely massive!!

SWIM DEEP – http://soundcloud.com/swimdeep

Blissed out summer vibes from one of Brums hottest bands at the moment. With love from NME and along with Brummie Cohorts Troumaca and Peace, Swim Deep are part of a blossoming local and (fingers crossed) soon to be national scene.

Alternative Dubstep Orchestra / The Frenzies

September 21st, 2011  |  Published in Listings

THE HONEYCOMB CLUB is making a comeback for the Autumn to bring you a very special night of entertainment.

ALTERNATIVE DUBSTEP ORCHESTRA

“This high powered take on a conventional orchestra has expanded the minds of everyone who has cared to listen. From masterful, original compositions featuring both traditional musicians and turntablists, to heavy hitting gritty covers like Cockney Thug by Rusk…o and Red by Laid Blak, this is live Dubstep for 2011.”

ADO, fresh from their first summer tour, plan to hit the deck hard at this event, showcasing new tracks alongside some crowd favourites which have been getting audiences rocking across the UK since the start of this project last winter.

This is alternative live dubstep with an orchestral twist, celebrating and melting many genres and influences, bringing turntablism and traditional musicianship together in their own unique way. This collective features musicians and turntablists from Birmingham who have come together from all walks of music to make a distinct wall of sound which gets any party rockin’.

THE FRENZIES

The Frenzies offer kitsch, sometimes surreal,  Tarantino-esque surf rock tones to any party and with legendary Birmingham frontman DAZ DOLCZECH as host, we know this band are going to get the party started. This is rock n roll with a modern twist and perfect for the Honeycomb Club saturday night soundtrack.

Dreadzone / SupaJamma

July 5th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

Dreadzone, the fervently followed British institution and original pioneers of UK bass culture released ‘The Good The Bad And The Dread’ – a compendium of their excellent musical story so far in May.

Still going strong after seventeen years, Dreadzone have carved a large niche and cult following.  Hit records, critical acclaim and a huge, devoted fan base are theirs, due in part to their utterly storming live shows. The all-killer-no-filler 16 tracks collate the many highlights of ‘the Zone’s’ output to date – a coherent and still fresh-sounding body of work.

Dreadzone deal in accessible yet credible club sounds with pop nous, referencing everyone from Woody Guthrie and Max Romeo to John Holt and classic films. They also like to wander into uncharted territory, melding Celtic, Jamaican and Asian influences to their riddims and samples, thus turning out unique, quirky gems like ‘Captain Dread’ and ‘Little Britain’. The latter track is available here in its more rare vocal incarnation, which wasn’t featured on the album Second Light (the instrumental was). Their dubwise beats and bottom end, often adorned with the unmistakably dulcet tones of Earl Sixteen are a product of the cut-and-paste magpie nature of the ever-morphing world of dance music. Other collaborators who’ve passed through the house of dread include cultural figurehead Don Letts, Melanie Blatt and Alison Goldfrapp.

Dreadzone originators Greg Dread and Leo Williams are the drum and bass respectively in the seminal post-punk-electro-pop band Big Audio Dynamite. Tim Bran was also a founding father, still involved in shaping the Dread sound. Dreadzone was born from the duo’s shared love for reggae, ska, dub, dancehall, hip hop, breakbeats and the burgeoning electronic music scene of the time.

+ support SupaJamma

SupaJamma – Manchester band featuring the vocal talents of Martin ‘Sugar’ Merchant, former frontman of mighty electro dub rockers Audioweb &  previously the Sugar Merchants, he was also a vocalist with both the legendary UK reggae pioneers Saxon Sound & Maverick Sound Systems. They draw their influences from rock, punk, electro, dub, hip hop to name a few, the band blend these vibes to create their own awesome soundtrack which they tag ‘Rock ‘n’ Soul’. Already a proven as a live juggernaut of a band with hard rocking grooves behind Merchants soulful melodies & spitfire ragga anthems.

Martyn Joseph Band

Martyn’s  new album “Under Lemonade Skies” has such a rich and compelling soundscape that a long anticipated string of dates with a band has finally come to fruition. Make sure you grab this rare opportunity to see one of the UK’s finest songwriters and performers at the top of his game, and with US producer Mason Neely on Drums (and lots of other things) and Wal Coughlan on Bass. The Urban Voodoo Machine

March 21st, 2011  |  Published in Listings

With the release of their brand new album, In Black ‘N’ Red on 2nd May, coinciding with their biggest, most comprehensive UK tour to date, The Urban Voodoo Machine looks set to conquer the country with their unique brand of sleaze-tinged, dark-edged, rockabilly-flavoured, gypsy blues and folk-punk – or Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop’n'Stroll as the group like to call it!

“Using horns, violin, accordion, banjo and multiple percussionists, the band veers into mariachi-influenced blues, whiskey-soaked country rags and punkabilly-style rave-ups.”

Heidi Spencer & the Rare Birds + Allie Moss

March 8th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

Heidi Spencer is a true-to-life troubadour and self-described eccentric, the songs on “Under Streetlight Glow” are pared-down to the essentials. One can feel a chill wind blow slightly through Spencer’s guitar and piano chords while her distinctive and inviting voice provides warmth for those cold nights the Milwaukee native knows so well.

Allie Moss is a New Jersey singer, vocal coach and guitarist, her song Corner created a wonderful singalong lullaby which  was used for BT Infinity very successful TV commercial. Her new album ‘Late Bloomer’ gets an official launch for this tour.

Honeycomb Club Presents: Alternative Dubstep Orchestra / Velvet Texas Cannonball / Sam Redmore

February 10th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

The Honeycomb Club, after launching in December of last year, has quickly established itself as a quality midweek music night celebrating world class musicians, DJs and visuals alike.

The March session has live resident dubstep outfit ALTERNATIVE DUBSTEP ORCHESTRA alongside psychedelic-rock-blues outfit VELVET TEXAS CANNONBALL (think The Doors meets Cream – Hammond organ-tastic!). If that wasn’t enough, Sam Redmore will also be popping by to spin some tunes – but expect something a little different from his Freestyle residency sets, as we blend through musical styles. DJ SWITCH will be turntablist supremo with the orchestra, alongside THE DOCTOR.
As per usual, expect collaborations galore and some very special new arrangements!

Resident DJs The Doctor and Malicious DJ will also be adding to this month’s soundscape, with visuals provided by Blendstate.

And of course, expect to see some awesome local music videos.

WE DON’T DO FLYERS OR POSTERS BECAUSE OF POSTER WARS, COUNCIL JOBSWORTHS, ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS, LACK OF EFFECTIVENESS IN A WORLD OVERRUN WITH PROMO PAMPHLETS, AND MOST OF ALL….BECAUSE WE WANT TO BUILD A GREAT AUDIENCE ON WORD OF MOUTH…so on that note, tell all your friends! The first 3 events have had a fantastic crowd of music lovers. Come and be part of the next one. The audience is AS important as the music.

Don’t forget to get in early – Door open at 8pm. Venue closes at 11:30pm. Come and join us in this midweek celebration of musical goodness…

Tickets will be on sale from Friday 11th February – early bird deals available. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Tickets are £5 advanced (through Ticket Sellers) and £8 on the door.
