Alternative Dubstep Orchestra / The Frenzies

September 21st, 2011  |  Published in Listings

THE HONEYCOMB CLUB is making a comeback for the Autumn to bring you a very special night of entertainment.

ALTERNATIVE DUBSTEP ORCHESTRA

“This high powered take on a conventional orchestra has expanded the minds of everyone who has cared to listen. From masterful, original compositions featuring both traditional musicians and turntablists, to heavy hitting gritty covers like Cockney Thug by Rusk…o and Red by Laid Blak, this is live Dubstep for 2011.”

ADO, fresh from their first summer tour, plan to hit the deck hard at this event, showcasing new tracks alongside some crowd favourites which have been getting audiences rocking across the UK since the start of this project last winter.

This is alternative live dubstep with an orchestral twist, celebrating and melting many genres and influences, bringing turntablism and traditional musicianship together in their own unique way. This collective features musicians and turntablists from Birmingham who have come together from all walks of music to make a distinct wall of sound which gets any party rockin’.

THE FRENZIES

The Frenzies offer kitsch, sometimes surreal,  Tarantino-esque surf rock tones to any party and with legendary Birmingham frontman DAZ DOLCZECH as host, we know this band are going to get the party started. This is rock n roll with a modern twist and perfect for the Honeycomb Club saturday night soundtrack.

Honeycomb Club Presents: Alternative Dubstep Orchestra / Velvet Texas Cannonball / Sam Redmore

February 10th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

The Honeycomb Club, after launching in December of last year, has quickly established itself as a quality midweek music night celebrating world class musicians, DJs and visuals alike.

The March session has live resident dubstep outfit ALTERNATIVE DUBSTEP ORCHESTRA alongside psychedelic-rock-blues outfit VELVET TEXAS CANNONBALL (think The Doors meets Cream – Hammond organ-tastic!). If that wasn’t enough, Sam Redmore will also be popping by to spin some tunes – but expect something a little different from his Freestyle residency sets, as we blend through musical styles. DJ SWITCH will be turntablist supremo with the orchestra, alongside THE DOCTOR.
As per usual, expect collaborations galore and some very special new arrangements!

Resident DJs The Doctor and Malicious DJ will also be adding to this month’s soundscape, with visuals provided by Blendstate.

And of course, expect to see some awesome local music videos.

WE DON’T DO FLYERS OR POSTERS BECAUSE OF POSTER WARS, COUNCIL JOBSWORTHS, ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS, LACK OF EFFECTIVENESS IN A WORLD OVERRUN WITH PROMO PAMPHLETS, AND MOST OF ALL….BECAUSE WE WANT TO BUILD A GREAT AUDIENCE ON WORD OF MOUTH…so on that note, tell all your friends! The first 3 events have had a fantastic crowd of music lovers. Come and be part of the next one. The audience is AS important as the music.

Don’t forget to get in early – Door open at 8pm. Venue closes at 11:30pm. Come and join us in this midweek celebration of musical goodness…

Tickets will be on sale from Friday 11th February – early bird deals available. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Tickets are £5 advanced (through Ticket Sellers) and £8 on the door.

Erland & The Carnival + Special Guests

February 10th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

One of our Moseley Folk 2010 favourites and officially the loudest band of the festival, Erland & The Carnival will be returning to Birmingham surrounding the release of their forthcoming second album – Nightingale. We can’t wait!

Erland & The Carnival

http://www.myspace.com/carnival

We’re looking forward to the next instalment of their darkly poppy, twisted and electronic sound. The new album cover perhaps sums them up – it’s a documentary photo of the Enfield poltergeist at work in the late ‘70s, depicting young Janet Hodgson being thrown across her bedroom by the much-debated dark spirit.

If you’re not sure what to expect, as with their debut, that included some old source material – E&TC find lyrical and musical inspiration in folk music of the past, which they contort into thrilling new shapes. “Last time, we came out saying we were reinventing folk, but people said we were taking really old folk into the 1970s,” said drummer David Nock. “This one, we wanted to take something even older and make it even newer.”

If that doesn’t seal the deal, the charismatic stage presence of front man Erland Cooper is not to be missed especially when coupled with the talents of David Nock and guitarist Simon Tong (ex The Verve and The Good, The Bad & The Queen, now a guitar-for-hire in Gorillaz)

“This is the sound of musicians on an extended honeymoon with each other, barely aware of the delight they instill in their listeners” – The Times

Sea Of Bees / Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou / James Walbourne

January 7th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

Sea of Bees is the musical project of Julie Ann Bee, or Jules as everyone calls her.

She sings, writes the songs, and plays lots of musical instruments.
“Took me about 50 seconds — the length of the woozy, haunting intro to “Marmalade” — to completely fall for Sea of Bees, the nom de tune of Sacramento indie-popper Julie Baenziger. Her debut album “Songs for the Ravens” sounds folky in some places, gauzy and ambient in others and twee as hell in still others, but beautiful throughout, and a potent reminder that emotional virtue is an artist’s most precious commodity. This one’s special, folks, let’s not screw it up.” -Kevin Bronson, Buzzbands LA, LA Weekly

“Songs for the Ravens is bound to be one of this year’s finest records;as soon as you hear it you’re not going to be able to shakeit.” -Ned Lannamann,Portland Mercury

Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou are rare musicians. This formidable young husband and wife duo are redefining the modern folk musician. Their resilient and perfectly synchronised union of heart and mind hollers and sings in euphonious harmony, dancing elegantly with words masterfully placed.

What this artful and prolific partnership possesses is the seldom seen commitment to truly well written and performed songs, with equal measure of incisive social observation and timeless grace. TM&HL spare no time for whimsy or self-indulgence. Their music is intelligent, shrewd, yet touching and universal in its sentiment. Few performers harness this rarest ability, this calmest power, and to behold two such artists working as a well-oiled creative machine, conjoined in spirit, is an exceptional and extraordinary occurrence. Live, their mesmerising repertoire chimes with melody and verse, with a delivery both intense and delightful.

James Walbourne has been widely revered as a young up and coming guitarist for a while now and has been spotted wielding the axe for the likes of The Pogues, The Pretenders, The Pernice Brothers and the Peter Bruntnell Band to name but a few.

He is now embarking on a solo career and is definitely not one to be missed!

Matthew Dear (Live Band)

January 6th, 2011  |  Published in Listings

This is Tmrw presents..

MATTHEW DEAR (LIVE BAND)

Matthew Dear released one of the best records of 2010 in ‘Black City’. I think it’s fair to say this album has put him in the same league as the likes of Four Tet and Caribou. Not forgetting his remixes last year, including his re rub of The XX’s – VCR and his live show which has left jaws touching the floor (file under Bowie and LCD Soundsystem)…This show is one of only two solo dates whilst Matthew travels the country supporting Interpol…..We’re so exited to be welcoming him to The Hare and Hounds….This is seriously not a show to be missed..

***** PLEASE NOTE THIS SHOW TAKES PLACE IN VENUE 2 SO CAPACITY IS STRICTLY LIMITED *****

Full Bio:

Depending on whom you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for the Fabric mix series and Get Physical’s Body Language. He maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none—and he’s just hitting his stride.

Matthew Dear’s 2003 full-length Ghostly debut, Leave Luck to Heaven, is a suite of sparse, wickedly funky house laced with Dear’s deep, distinctive vocals, and includes the much-loved single “Dog Days” (voted one of Pitchfork’s Top 100 Songs of the Decade). The record was met with rapturous acclaim from both the dance-music establishment and the critical press, including a four-star review in Rolling Stone. Dear’s 2007 follow-up,

Asa Breed, is a considerable departure from Heaven’s dancefloor excursions, incorporating the polyrhythms of Afrobeat, the irreverent pop sensibilities of Brian Eno, and the austere beauty of Krautrock. More four-stars reviews followed (Q and Mojo magazines), and Dear subsequently began touring with a live three-piece band, Matthew Dear’s Big Hands, in which he acted as frontman, commanding the stage with a Bryan Ferry-like swagger and a gentleman’s grace.

Today, Matthew Dear finds himself in a unique position. His highly anticipated fourth album, 2010’s Black City, is the culmination of years of hard work and experimentation, a darkly playful sound-world that envelops the listener like the arms of a malevolent lover. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear now inhabits a rarefied corner of the musical universe: no longer tethered to any one genre, respected by his peers, and blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy. Now is Matthew Dear’s moment, and it sounds like nothing else.
