Harry’s Gym / Bungalows / Rubicava

December 13th, 2010  |  Published in Listings

Harrys Gym have a presence and sound that could easily leap the Fjords to international note.” – Clash magazine

‘Like leaves on the ground, but rather snow in the air, swirling and massive, weightless and fragile’ … is the most apt metaphor to describe the angelically haunted voice of Harry’s Gym vocalist Anne-Lise Frokedal. With a liking to Garbage, Blonde Redhead and The Knife, the Norwegian quartet are “wonderfully soaring, dreamlike prog-pop that’s more northern sorrow than Northern Soul – but not too oppressively bleak.” (Guardian, Band Of The Day).

And that’s where we find them on the 3rd May, with the UK release of their debut self-titled album. Recorded, produced and mixed the by the band themselves, in their own professional studio in an abandoned fitness centre (which shares the name of the band, Harrys Gym) along with the help of Serena-Maneesh (4AD) mastermind Emil Nikolaisen, the album emanates an air of psychedelic sorrow and haunted sweetness.

Bungalows – a quirky affluent fountain of rapturous heartfelt pop flows from the soul as the instruments and voice personify teen tragedy coupled with the joys of living.

Never before has a torrid love affair with the darker side of humanity been portrayed in such an exquisite fashion. Frontman, Josh Yeomans, brings an energy and enthusiasm to his role in the band that is sharply assisted by blues influenced guitarist James Watton, raw sounding guitarist Jon Nightingale and a rhythm and bass unit made up of young bass sensation Matt Glasbey and drummer Marcus Williams. Furthermore the ensemble locks the crowd in a foot tapping daze as the intensity of the profound lyrical display mesmerize and induce procrastination. Art in its true form.

Rubicava ‘(named for a fictional city in a graphic novel I started writing last year before giving up due to chronic laziness, conversely derived from a location in seminal Lucas Arts adventure game Grim Fandango) came into being at the start of this new decade in January 2010 (for arguments sake let’s call it the tenties).

The songs you’ll find are basic demos I recorded on my lonesome over the course of the last year on my humble macbook (with the exception of Sleep It Off which was recorded with my other band Dead Letter Office at a studio in London with our good friends Dan Watson and Alex Insley but was rejected by the others for reasons beyond my understanding). The idea is for these demos to give you some idea of the bands sound, but in all likelihood (as we’re only a couple of weeks old) the songs will change over time to reflect whatever direction the band choose to embark upon.’

Admiral Fallow / Goodnight Lenin / Ben Calvert

November 24th, 2010  |  Published in Listings

Admiral Fallow is a stunning new group, formerly known as Brother Louis Collective, born in 2007 and gathered round the precocious talent of the young foot-stamping, faintly maniacal singer/song-writer Louis Abbott. Citing influences including Tom Waits, Elbow, Low, Midlake, King Creosote, and Springsteen, Admiral Fallow adds clarinet, flute, stand up double bass and four jaw-dropping voices to the usual indie line-up to smash through their joyous, heart-filled, orchestral-tinged and beautifully well crafted songs.

Louis is proud to be Scottish and his accent is to the fore in his singing, contrasting magically with the Northumbrian tones of Sarah Hayes, the second vocalist.

“I really love this band. I think they’re great” Guy Garvey, Elbow, BBC 6Music

“Absolutely beautiful…great new talent….” Edith Bowman Radio 1

“That is dreamy…really, really nice….” Fearne Cotton Radio 1

Goodnight Lenin – As the era of past outings ended we ventured into the forest to say goodnight to the pasture of our youth. The following winter was harsh and volatile alas we didn’t dare return to the forest. It eventually passed as did the spring and we woke to the scent of summer resting on our senses. We gathered our thoughts and stepped outside of the darkened room leaving our past triumphs to collect dust. With satchels in tow we climbed the hill which we had once walked to find the path we wished to travel. It seemed that months had passed and yet we were still to find our way. Our legs were tiring and the absence of motivation forced us to lie down and go back to sleep. As my head rested in the leaves i heard the sound of considered notes chiming beneath the earth. I alerted the sleeping and began to move the leaves and sure enough there it was; the path. We had been advancing in the right direction the entire time without even knowing. As we moved the earth to reveal the red brick we could see that the path was littered with words and notes which we collected and hurled into our satchels as we made a dash for the forest. We entered the grave yard, dragged our instruments from the ground and began to play.

Chapel Club / David’s Lyre – SOLD OUT

October 27th, 2010  |  Published in Listings

In its current incarnation, Chapel Club was born in the summer of 2008 in the shadow of St. Luke’s Church, on London’s Old Street. It was here, two or three times a week, that the five members of a then unknown band would gather after rehearsing nearby to drink and discuss a name for their group

“Like everything else with us,” says Michael (guitar, keys), “the name was unplanned and ill-defined in the beginning. We didn’t start out with one and we’d go ages without bringing it up. But on the occasions when we did talk about it down in the churchyard, there was a lot of disagreement. ” Eventually, the answer came from the site of the discussions itself, and the embryonic band became Chapel Club.

The band’s founder, Michael grew up in the depths of Essex before moving to the capital. He spent some time playing in other people’s bands and often lent his abilities to friends’ projects, but his real focus was always on doing something much more personal. He began collecting ideas and inspiration – anything from vintage natural history illustrations and stop-motion film shorts to guitar lines, drum samples and snatches of melody – with a vague notion that, out of this ephemera, a band might one day be born.

When Michael met Liam (bass) and Liam introduced Alex (guitar), his best friend since junior school days in Swindon, the core parts were in place. What the band needed now was a drummer and a frontman – then the machine could start to move. Leeds-born Rich (drums) and Londoner Lewis (vocals) provided the missing pieces.

Sea Fields / The Scholars / Kytes

May 11th, 2010  |  Published in Listings

Hailing from Birmingham, a city which has a tendency to attract criticism for its music scene, breaking through may seem difficult. But there is no hesitation that Sea Fields will be one to watch for 2010. Formerly Kid Captain, Sea Fields look destined to hit it big. Drawing comparisons to The Smiths with Morrissey-esque vocals, entwined with the delicacy of Editors’ instrumentals, Sea Fields create an impressive neoteric yet preserved sound capable of smashing through the industry.

Main support at this gig comes in the form of The Scholars, a band who formed in North Oxfordshire in early 2008 around the song writing partnership of brothers Adrian and Christian. While they call Oxford their home, as a band they are of no fixed abode preferring to represent the ‘Midlands’ tag. The Scholars have also shared bills with great bands such as Two Door Cinema Club, The Cinematics, The Big Pink, Chapel Club, Animal Kingdom, Charly Coombes and The New Breed as well as playing the wonderful Truck Festival with Ash and Supergrass headlining.

Support comes from KYTES…..

Jeff Klein / David Garside / Jamie Croft

April 28th, 2010  |  Published in Listings

Jeff Klein is an Indie Rock Singer-Songwriter/Musician from upstate New York. Equal parts Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, Beck and Gram Parsons, Jeff Klein has released 2 albums on Björk’s One Little Indian label, featuring guests ranging from Ani Difranco to Dave Pirner. Both albums have been recieved with international critical acclaim. When not touring and recording under his own name, Klein has been known to be a sometimes touring member with The Honorary Title, The Twilight Singers, Mark Lanegan, Statistics, and Stars of Track and Field.

Main Support is David Garside. There are few songwriters working today that have absorbed their ‘classic pop/rock’ influences so fully, and arrived at such a mature style as David. He draws on them as a back-drop for creative exploration into uncharted territory. His innovation is to create a world through his melodies and chord patterns, his gently unfolding songs structures, and his consistently engaging lyrical turn of phrase; there is a subtle mood which infuses everything which could only be David Garside.

Opening act is Jamie Croft.’ I have been singing and playing guitar since the age of 5 and composing since the age of 10. I have never looked back! Every song I write seems to be an improvement on the last and now I am looking at recording my latest material a.s.a.p. I have mostly accoustic tracks, but I am now writing with Keith Birkett(Rokyesoxoff) in our recently formed band High Roller.’
