Joe Gideon & The Shark / Duke Garwood / The Rivers Presley Set

joe-gideonJoe Gideon and The Shark are a two-piece; Joe Gideon howls and plays rough bluesy licks will his sister Viva (‘The Shark’) hammers the drums and plays keyboards too! Signed to Seasick Steve’s Bronzerat, they have recently supported Nick Cave, Duke Spirit and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. Loog Record’s Duke Garwood is a treat; expect some bastardised, discordant, Tom Waits’esque blues. Ryan Spendlove, a slide blues guitarist of the highest order, enjoys a party; this Saturday night should be no different!

Joe Gideon’s tour support is Duke Garwood... Luke ‘Duke’ Garwood is the sometime collaborator of Archie Bronson Outfit (he plays clarinet with the Domino three-piece) and Emerald Palace is his second release solo release.

Duke Garwood’s first paid musical job was back in the late 8o’s playing guitar on The Orbs seminal “Perpetual Dawn” taken from they’re debut album co-produced by Youth. Nearly twenty years and many musical wanderings later Duke Garwood is about to release an album on Youths new label Butterfly Recordings. You could say that some sort of cycle is completed.

Garwood’s 1st album “Holy Week” came out to great critical acclaim last year. Q magazine described it as “making Will Oldham sound like Engelbert Humperdinck!” His follow up “Emerald Palace” was recorded in a log cabin on the wooded slopes of Box Hill over 2 scorching days and nights in the mid-summer of 2005. Garwood and his long time drummer/percussionist-Paul May laid down some 40 tracks of which 18 were finally chosen for his new release.

The two local band opening slots have gone to two of the finest in the city…

Opening up the show hailing from Birmingham and channeling bluesmen infinitely older than his 22 years, The Rivers Presley Set’s music echoes the demons of Son House & Model T Ford if they were bought up on a diet of Biffy Clyro and Black Keys.

Joined on stage by drummer Thomas Henry their live presence switches between swollen slide guitar licks and pin drop silences which leave crowds staggered. Recent devotees Black Diamond Heavies, after catching The Rivers Presley Set live on a trip to the UK, were so impressed that they asked the guys to join them on the US leg of their tour.

The band are all set to release their debut single this summer and are currently playing a string of dates around the UK.
