Harvey Sutherland & Bermuda Live Next Thursday at the H&H

Leftfoot & Moodfix will be teaming up to bring Harvey Sutherland & Bermuda live to the H&H next Thursday 1st June.

As an aspiring artist, Melbourne’s electronic music scene can be a tough nut to crack. The city is awash with talented DJs and musicians, who perform to notoriously demanding audiences, setting the bar for entry very high. Harvey Sutherland, AKA Mike Katz, made his name in this climate, and on this RA Session you’ll see why he’s gained so much respect in Melbourne. Katz is a former session musician who was a member of //This Thing//, a collective of local DJs and musicians who throw parties and release records and tapes through an eponymous label. He put out some music under his given name and the alias Mike Kay a few years back, but Katz really found his groove when he adopted the name Harvey Sutherland and began developing the breezy style he’s now known for. “Bermuda,” released last year through Motor City Drum Ensemble’s MCDE label, probably sums it up best. You could call it a house track but that’s a touch reductive—Katz’s sunny Juno 60 keys and baggy drums nod equally to disco or boogie. Between that release and others for This Thing, Voyage Recordings and Echovolt Records, Katz has fleshed out a signature sound that you’d only maybe mistake for the best of early Floating Points. Lately, though, Katz has been expanding his palate. There’s his techno-influenced project with Kane Ikin called Coup d’état, which released its first record back in February, and now we get Bermuda, a “futuristic disco” trio that sees him collaborating with the drummer Graeme Pogson and the string player Tamil Rogeon.
