Ozric Tentacles are legends of the UK underground. Formed in 1984, the band have released well over 20 albums and sold over a million records worldwide despite never having major label backing. Famous for their live performances, long fronted by Champignon, who dances around the stage in a trance-like manner and occasionally plays the flute.

Over the years Ozrics have toured extensively both at home and abroad, performing regularly throughout Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. They continue to create genre-free music with no boundaries in sight, it means that their aim and goals are enthusiastically raised as they strive to take each track to a new level, and each album must grow substantially for the band to be satisfied.

ADMIRAL FALLOW

Admiral Fallow is a group, formerly known as Brother Louis Collective, centered around singer/song-writer Louis Abbott. Citing influences such as Tom Waits, Elbow, Low, Midlake, King Creosote, and Springsteen, Admiral Fallow add clarinet, flute, double bass and four jaw-dropping voices to the usual indie line-up to smash through their joyous, heart-filled, orchestral-tinged and beautifully well crafted songs.

Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Boots Met My Face’, Admiral Fallow have toured with the likes of Fyfe Dangerfield, Snow Patrol and The Felice Brothers, completed a headline tour of the United States, and played an astonishing six sold-out shows in seven days in their home town of Glasgow. With album two already in the works, and their track ‘Squealing Pigs’ featuring in an NBC commercial first aired during this year’s Super Bowl, 2012 is already shaping up to be another great year for Admiral Fallow.

“I really love this band. I think they’re great” – Guy Garvey, Elbow

“Admiral Fallow are set to soundtrack our forthcoming festivals, fireworks and Hogmanays.” – The List

Maybe you’ve been jilted, John, and you’re on your own.
It’s not just you… everybody hurts, it’s like you can’t get enough and every breath you take seems pointless.
But come on everybody! Yes, you’re a creep now, but look back at that twentieth century boy, that rebel-rebel who fought the law. No need to look back in anger at what once was… no regrets, man.
Rather, reignite the fire, get those teenage kicks, join the common people and feel the revolution. One way or another it could be your time again.
Rockin in the free world, that’s what starts me up and that’s what turns you on. Music, that’s the one I love…

For an evening of great songs…. The Dangerous Presidents!

So you’re thinking, “Should I stay or should I go?” It’s a no-brainer… it’s time to come together at the Hare and Hounds.
See you soon,
The Dangerous Presidents

This time it’s a charity gig in aid of Sandwell Young Carers and it’s £5 on the door

It’s a heady brew and one that bubbles potently through her stunning current release, Children Of A Factory Nation (Chezz Music), around which the set will be mostly based.

A concept album, inspired by the real life drowning of the titular sailor of opening track Johnny & The Sea, a hypnotic slow march folk blues about disillusion and suicide, it follows a Welsh family over three generations from the 1860s through daughter Molly’s move to London and the eventual death of her child, Wynne, in 1961, the changing economic and working conditions impacting on their lives.

Thus, connected by almost flamenco style handclaps, the opener gives way to the no less sparse and gloomy A Woman Scorned telling the widow’s grief while church bells, street vendors’ cries and horses hooves pave the way for Molly (?) busking for change in the slow gathering tribal swell of A Hard Game and (drawing on Pink Floyd’s The Wall) a clanking metal beating rhythm bedrocks Factory Nation’s industrial work song of the daily grind.

It is, though, a far from difficult listen as Reyne demonstrates a commanding mastery of melody and lyric to turn what is frequently dark subject matter into mesmerising and memorable songs like the tribal rhythmed Heavenly Creatures (a title shared with Peter Jackson’s 1994 New Zealand true life thriller), the anthemic Wait (I Run Too Fast) with its skirling bagpipes and the heartbreaking The Arsonist with its cascading, shimmering chorus.

Lazy comparisons to PJ Harvey have been trotted out, but you’re more likely to hear echoes of Marianne Faithful while the drone intro to Hard Times has shades of June Tabor and London, a conflation of trad songs Bedlam Boys and Silver Dagger set to a metronomic beat and backing moan, suggests the dank undergrowth of Sandy Denny’s Matty Groves. However, the most striking comparison to these ears is the criminally unknown Shona Laing, a fellow New Zealander and one time singer with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.

This is Reyne’s first UK tour and, given the lack of awareness about her music (this is her fourth album), may well mean it’s unlikely to be a crowded house, but for those drawn to discover more it could well prove one of their year’s revelations.

There’s excellent support too from Builth Wells singer-songwriter Jack Harris whose self-released The Flame And The Pelican blends English and American folk influences with a degree in EngLit from Oxford, accomplished acoustic guitar fingerwork and a warm, soulful slightly salty burr.

Easy on the ear with echoes of Jackson C Frank, Dylan, Richard Thompson, acoustic Springsteen, Paul Simon and fellow Welshman Martyn Joseph, Wedding Dentures, the story of a bartered bride with wooden teeth wary that her son’s future bride’s perfect smile hides a darker soul, is likely to be a highlight of the evening. 7.30pm. £5. Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath

A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS

A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called “the loudest band in New York”. This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called “loud” rock and roll that’s out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they’ve accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that’s clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make.

After two critically acclaimed albums and touring with acts such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Nine Inch Nails and MGMT, A Place To Bury Strangers return this month with a new EP. ‘Onwards To The Wall’ packs every bit of the searing sonic maelstrom listeners have come to expect from APTBS. Produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by APTBS themselves, this is the sound of a band in control of making out-of-control music. The adroit songcraft that’s always been there is brought to the fore, with familiar pop hooks repurposed for maximum carnage. A handful of contemporary bands are currently exploring the new limits of loud. Here, APTBS proves that they have not only been leading that charge, but that they are also evolving and maturing on those front lines.

“A Place To Bury Strangers have managed to strike a perfect balance between noise and tune, and as a result created one of 2009′s most ingenious records.” – Drowned in Sound

“Exploding Head holds as one of the most consistent, mind-blowing releases this year, unwavering of an any possible identity crisis.” – Sputnikmusic

III with Free School, Diura & 4 Oz of Groove

COME PARTY WITH THE BLUEBEAT ARKESTRA!

The sharply-dressed, Birmingham-based eclecto-maniacs return to The Hare & Hounds on Saturday 25th February to bring you Hustle! III.
Building on the success of their previous club-nights The Bluebeat Arkestra are back, bringing with them all manner of music to lively up your Saturday night.

Hustle! III has a three band line-up plus a DJ set from the Arkestra themselves. First on the bill are 4oz of Groove. These Wolves-based groovesters encompass the sounds of funk and reggae. Acoustic licks glide over bass-propelled riddims, whilst impromptu guest performers mean that one 4oz set is never the same as the next. If you like your donuts with jammin’ (geddit?) they’re the group for you!

For the remainder of the bill, Hustle! goes electric: Second up are Diura, a mysterious act whose ambient, European-flavoured electronica will leave you floating on a cloud of shimmering synths.

The final act Free School will draw you in, lift you up and then blow you away. This mask-wearing trio have created a huge name for themselves locally and are one of Bluebeat’s favourite acts. With two fantastic EPs to their name (check ‘em on Spotify), Free School blend Boards of Canada ethereality with contemporary beats, creating hypnotic electro that’ll have you on the dance-floor without you even realising.
And that’s not all: Because the Bluebeat Arkestra love to party (and will fight for the right to do so), they’re also gonna spin their favourite tunes until the early hours – and dance and party and party and dance and dance and party some more – and they invite you to do the same.

They got it, so come get it and get yourselves HUSTLIN’!!!!
