Unfortunately due to circumstances totally beyond our control, we are unable to use the original venue for The Little Chill. This is due to our venue losing their late licence. Thankfully our good friend’s at The Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath have stepped in at short notice to save the day, rather than the awful thought of cancelling the event. Although we don’t have as large an outside area to use, we will be utilising the stable as the chill area, which will not detract from your enjoyment. More attractions to be announced, including some special Little Chill food from Soul Food Project.

The first ever Little Chill will be taking place on Sat 7th and Sunday 8th August.

The ‘Little Chill’ means just that – a place to come with family and friends, and enjoy the various music types, supplied by some of the finest clubbing brands the city has to offer, on offer throughout the weekend with no moody vibes, moody people, or moody music. In fact moody is not invited!!!!

With the way everybody is in the SH1T money wise these days, we’re putting on our ‘little’ event for the BARGAIN price of £8.00 for a full weekend ticket or £5.00 per day.

Featuring some of the finest DJ’s from what we consider to be some of the best home grown & independent club brands that Birmingham has to offer over three zones.

Entertainment wise, there will be different styles of music within the various zones which means something to please everybody.

Magic Kids are the Memphis Beach Boys. Their mission is to capture, in total detail, from the instrumentation to the harmonies, California’s finest in their early glory days, before Brian Wilson had his head turned by the madcap adventurism and perplexing wordplay of Van Dyke Parks.

There are five of them. They’re from Memphis. Their debut album is called “Memphis” and will be released on 24th August 2010. According to The Guardian, “their songs are so Beach Boys 1963-4 they should only be heard in a Deuce Coupe.”

Shake/Shiver/Moan, the first 22-20s album to feature the Trimble/Bartup/Irving/Hare lineup, was released by tbd in the U.S. on June 22, and features the studio versions of the tracks
from the live EP and six other brand new 22-20s numbers.

The Music Room – James Summerfield, Richard Burke & World Of Fox

On “Count To 10 and Start Again”, his 3rd solo album and first for Commercially Inviable Records, James Summerfield returned with a lightness of touch, dark and strange humour and his ever present fantastic ear for melody to tell sweet tales of the biggest blows. It was widely acknowledged are his finest work to date. Co-produced with fellow Peel veteran and labelmate Simon Fox (Grover), “Count To 10…” is undeniably frank and deals with his dark period, yet contains the beautiful melodies and musical arrangements that followers of James’ work will fondly remember.

Richard Burke previously screamed his way through seven years of Indie rock mayhem with the wonderfully shambolic Starries before deciding that his delicate, lusty vocal chords were much better suited to the comparatively quieter world of off-kilter folk. His forthcoming debut album, “An Ocean Full Of Broken Stars”, clocks in at just under 30 minutes and is simply a magical, mesmerising collection of songs. Listeners to the album will immediately be drawn to future single, “Brown Eyes, Dark Hair” and his stunning, highly personal take on Yazoo’s “Only You”. Whilst Indie Rock mourns his loss, then, Off-Kilter Folk can rejoice as he melds the fluent guitar style of Jose Gonzalez to the tunefulness of Teenage Fanclub, all the while incorporating his wonderfully quirky and often heart-wrenching lyrics.

A prolific and committed independent musician, Simon Fox aka World Of Fox, was formerly leader of Birmingham’s post-rock pioneers, Grover. Between 1993 and 2003 Grover released a host of albums, singles and split releases on independent labels around the world. Broadcasts on BBC Radio1 (including a Peel Session in 2001), plus airtime on a variety of independent stations in Europe and the USA, helped Grover build a dedicated international fan-base and influence the UK post-rock scene. As well as performing solo, Simon can often be seen/heard collaborating with other artists. Most notably, he was one half of electronica duo Krafla, was a founder member of the Experimental Music Collective, recorded and gigged an album with Clair Horton, is currently working with James Summerfield and is a regular guest DJ for the Grumpy Man DJs.

Opium: The Confessions of Thomas De Quincey is a one-man show which will star established West Midlands actor in the titular role. Set the year 1843, we find de Quincey ailing due to a lifelong addiction to opium and the despair caused by the death of his eldest son Horace, who was killed the previous year fighting in the Opium War against imperial China.

The play itself takes its basic structure from de Quincey’s own Confessions of an English Opium Eater, regaling the audience with our hero’s first tentative steps into opium eating. De Quincey is at times humourous, almost self-deprecating when describing his experiences of the drug and life in general – refusing to be drawn into self-pity.

As the play progresses de Quincey’s mood and behaviour becomes ever more erratic. He is heavily under the influence of opium and his intake of the drug is at an all-time high. In many scenes de Quincey suffers hallucinations, usually these are images from his past and they either haunt him or delight him, depending on their nature. There is a particularly touching scene where de Quincey sees his beloved sister, whose death in childhood greatly marked his early life.

Sometimes the subject of the hallucination is shown to the audience, as when de Quincey talks to his recently deceased son, but usually the stage is empty save for de Quincey.

Thanks to their best-selling tribute album releases, Dub Side of the Moon (2003) and Radiodread (2006), as well as Until That Day (2008), an original EP, the Easy Star All-Stars have built a growing, dedicated fan base throughout the world, bringing together fans of reggae, classic rock, dub and indie rock into one big family. Their latest release, Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band, released in April 2009, tackles the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in complete reggae fashion. It cracked the Billboard Top 200 twice, becoming the first reggae album to do that in over two years.

The group, which operates as a collective with a rotating cast of musicians and singers, was put together by Easy Star co-founders Michael Goldwasser, Eric Smith and Lem Oppenheimer. The Mummers

The Mummers are a band based in the English seaside town of Brighton, centred around London-born singer-songwriter Raissa Khan-Panni. They take their name ‘Mummers’ from the medieval performing troupes who would go from door-to-door wearing masks and costumes, staging plays in rhyme and song and mime.

Khan-Panni was once better known as Raissa, a solo artist that revealed a jumble of influences; a mix of Chinese, Indian, Mexican and Englishness. She was raised in the South London district of Tulse Hill, immersed first as a child in classical music, and later discovered Ricki Lee Jones and Prince. Raissa learned oboe, taught herself to sing, spent her school-days busking in Leicester Square and later all over Europe, before heading back to these shores to study music at Bristol.

Her solo career began not long afterwards, and she enjoyed critical acclaim across the media spectrum, most notably with the album Believer and the single How Long Do I Get. Despite the acclaim Khan-Panni remembers it as a period of some uncertainty.

By 2001, the solo projects were winding down and she returned to work, waitressing fulltime in a Brixton restaurant. During this time she began writing lyrics documenting this period of her life keeping the faith that she would one day leave waiting tables to return to music, She was inspired by the enormity of sound in Rufus Wainwright’s work, and by the spacey-ness of the Flaming Lips.

In 2005, she received through the post a track written around her vocals, and Raissa found her new collaborator – orchestral composer Mark Horwood, who was living on the South Coast in a treehouse just outside Brighton. They gathered a cast of 20 musicians from around Brighton and recorded the whole album in the treehouse with producer Paul Sandrone.

The Mummers sound is described as an orchestral urban fairground and includes as inspiration nightbuses, negro spirituals, the Owl and the Pussycat, the Wings of Desire, orange trees, early morning walks through London and the fairytale tapes she would listen to at bedtime every night as a child, set to the sound of a carnival, a marching band and a string quartet.

Khan-Panni has described The Mummers as musical adaptations of real life events, and fairytale versions of the mundane.

Ellen & The Escapades ‘of all the times’

Leeds based Ellen and the Escapades are finding themselves firmly at the front of the alt-folk wave currently sweeping the UK and beyond. Their self released debut single “Without You” bought them to the attention of both music lovers and the music industry and also led to the band being asked to play the BBC Introducing stage at both Leeds and Reading Festivals. This year started with studio sessions from which they appeared, blinking in the sunlight, just in time to be booked for a main stage appearance at Glastonbury as winners of the Q Magazine/Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition. “This gorgeous self-released single showcases a band with a fine line in bittersweet melodies whose eponymous front woman soothes your ears with her soft, Yorkshire lilt. After an amazing, sold out gig at “Hare & Hounds” in January, Smoove & Turrell are returning to Kings Heath on Saturday October 23rd 2010 to play tracks from their debut album ‘Antique Soul’ and to showcase tracks from their new album ‘Eccentric Audio’ …

Ask anyone on the funk or breaks scene who’s dropping a rocking beat and “A Man called Smoove” is the earnest reply. So far so good. A Nu-funk legend is dropping his latest album – should be good. But it’s not just good, it’s career making good and the reason why is that in John Turrell, Smoove has found his vocal match.Throwing down somewhere between Otis Redding and Animals frontman Eric Burdon, geordie Turrell is the epitome of blue-eyed soul. A working class family man with a voice that takes him and everyone who hears it to a place so far away from everyday life – it’s like a door to a different world is opened in your ear. Known mostly for uptempo, northern soul influenced, funk and beats jams, on this album Smoove finds someone who can roll with him on those lofty highs but then provide the gravel voiced soul for the comedown. Songs like “Darker Dayz” and “Without You” mean that this is an album with depth from a soul that can be as twisted and dark as it is joyful. Not that you’d know that from sitting in the pub with them. Then it’s two lads with warm accents and infectious laughter who light up a room and make everyone wonder who the hell it is that’s turning a drab local boozer into the funniest place in the world.

The boys are now earning plaudits everywhere including BBC Radio 6 Music’s Craig Charles who wrote the liner notes for their album and BBC Radio 2’s Radcliffe and Maconie Show (the single ‘I Can’t Give You Up’ was voted record of the week in January).

They are now selling out gigs around the country and just been booked for a German tour, as well as appearing at the Glastonbury, Big Chill, Kendal Calling and Evolution festivals during the summer… Tonight the pair headline with a full DJ set (including live vocals) to showcase their northern soul influenced funk and soul.

What a great year it’s been for the Geordie duo Smoove and Turrell. Having released their first album “Antique Soul” on Jalapeno Records in April, the lads have gone from strength to strength both on the UK scene and across Europe. Previous to their album being snapped up by Jalapeno, they have released a limited 7” single “I Can’t Give You Up” on German label “Club Tikka”. The single soon found itself in a bidding frenzy on Ebay with copies reaching a startling £166! Surely not for a new 7” I hear you cry…

Craig Charles (BBC 6 Funk & Soul Show) put pen to paper to write the sleeve notes for the album “Antique Soul” and also invited the whole seven piece band down to Manchester to perform a live session on his Radio show. It doesn’t stop there! The boys have also been called in for a live set on The Janice Long Show (BBC Radio 2) and on the legendary Clive Anderson’s “Loose Ends Show” (BBC Radio 4). To top it all off the boys also won single of the week on Marc Radcliff’s BBC 2 Show…

Smoove and Turrell have released some outstanding singles this year, working with some of the best remix artists in the country and beyond…

• “I Can’t Give You Up” includes club remixes from A Skillz and Lack of Afro.
• “You Don’t Know” was smashed for the dance floor with remixes from Kraak and Smaak and Featurecast.

And now Smoove and Turrell are gearing up for their next full single “Beggarman”. Not only will there be some heavy, heavy remixes from the likes of Crazy P and Basement Freaks. They have also been hard at work filming their first video to co-inside with the release, shot in their home town of Newcastle. To top it all off the video is already being played on rotation on Deluxe TV in Germany…

John Turrell has recently found him self collaborating with other high profile artists like Ashley Beadle, Omar, Kraak and Smaak and has also won the male lead vocalist in the “Fantasy Funk Band” on BBC 6 Music which is being recorded and performed live at the legendary Maida Vale Studios for its 70th Birthday Celebrations. The boys are currently on tour in Europe and in the UK and are returning to rock the Kendal Calling Festival, Glastonbury and the Big Chill Festivals over the summer months. Delta Spirit is a band from San Diego, California, United States, beginning in 2005.

The raw spirit of indie rock. An amplified, rocking version of ’60s protest folk. The soulful passion of the Violent Femmes and the Waterboys. All of these comparisons have been made in attempts to describe Delta Spirit, the southern California five-piece who might just be one of the most important new bands of the decade. Each description contains elements of the truth, but the real answer to the question “who is Delta Spirit?” lies within Ode to Sunshine, the band’s captivating debut. The group’s DIY ethic shines throughout the album, with songs honed razor-sharp over a year of non-stop touring across America. Opening sold-out tours for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cold War Kids, and Dr. Dog, the band developed a riveting live show and gained a loyal following amongst tastemaker music fans, earning them invites to national festivals like Austin City Limits, Noise Pop and Sasquatch. So it would not be an understatement to call Ode to Sunshine one of the year’s most highly-anticipated debuts. Rogue States – Some bands aspire to greatness; chasing big sounds and big ideas in an attempt to resonate. For others, it just happens to them. And so it is for Birmingham four piece Rogue States. The big ideas they wrestle with lyrically, like the widescreen, stadium guitars which back them, are there because the instant pop songs they set out to write got hijacked by questions and circumstance. The soaring melodies and driving anthems, like the obvious U2/Coldplay/Snow Patrol comparisons, are there because that’s just what happens when feeling and towering choruses meet.
Inevitably, years of near constant touring resulted in close friendships with Razorlight, particularly with then drummer Andy Burrows, who on nights off would come and see Rogue States play and in a bizarre role reversal, would help Stuart set-up his drums. In March 2009 the band supported Razorlight on their UK tour and then Andy literally put his money where his mouth is and paid for the recording of the band’s debut EP.
A band shaped by experience, classic pop and restless minds, Rogue States arrive uniquely accomplished; a breakthrough act!

This Love Affair are a no frills indie rock act that hail from the depths of Birmingham’s burgeoning music scene.

The band’s musical approach produces songs with an instantaneous melodic punch, which are indebted to their many and wide-ranging influences. Exemplified by the multiple harmonies, razor sharp guitar riffs, pounding bass lines and thumping drum beats, crowds are left in no doubt of the power and passion this band can produce.

Initi8 is a youth led band development project from Sound It Out Community Music, right here in Birmingham.

The Youth Advisory Board applied for funding to run the project in Birmingham, Walsall and Sandwell, and were successful in attaining over £100,000 for it to run. This concert is the culmination of all of the young people’s hard work over the last year. Each group will perform original music that also features on their recently completed Initi8 album! Come and support these creative young people as they showcase their writing and performance skills for the first time.

As we mark a year on from our first party at the Hare and Hounds, we want to reward our loyal regulars, friends, residents and one time only passers through with a FREE party to thank you for your support!

Over the last 12 months after having moved on from the Bulls head we have strived to bring something that we firmly believe this city has been missing… A regular Techno party with quality world renowned bookings, at a reasonable price and a crowd buzzing with enthusiasm for the music. Where legendary nights such as Atomic Jam set the precedent for Birminghams’ strong roots in the sound, they continue to attract thousands of revelers the country over a few times a year, many dewy eyed at the memories they muster. House of God will also continue to cater for the harder contingent where techno borders on the industrial with their renegade attitude that can’t be imitated. Lets not forget the recent rise in popularity almost to cult status of a particular techno label taking its name from a certain district that should indicate how important this music is for the city.

We asked Billy Nasty to open proceedings for us back in July 2009 (many of you that were there will confirm just how much of a party starter that guy really is!), we followed up by bringing a legend (and personal hero) to the Hare, DJ Rolando rocked the pub across 4 decks and a mixer Detroit style! Oliver Ho kicked off the year in February to one of our busiest events yet and to this day we still get people telling us how much they enjoyed themselves.

Then came April, it could so easily have been a disaster, volcanic eruptions are not something you expect to have to deal with when promoting Techno parties, but it presented a situation of sink or swim and some quick thinking secured us James Ruskin responsible for Blueprint Records, Valmay, and another artist with strong links to Surgeon, Sandwell and the early Birmingham scene. Having had to cancel Par Grindvik It ended up being a thousand times better than we imagined, still full at the end and giving the security plenty of verbal for “one more”. June was a difficult one, a nation gripped in football fever and frustrated at their outcome, we invited along Dave Angel to blast away the tension with a set of relentless machine soul and grooving techno, again a true hero of the scene always game for the party and humbled by the crowds warm reception to him…a proper geezer.

If you have shared in all or one of these parties then we thank you for your support, and if you are still to see what all the fuss is about then we recommend you join us on the 27th to kick off your Bank Holiday in style. The invisible entrance fee should keep your wallet a bit FATTER, and the music as always will be of the most current, credible and dance inducing. We will return in November with the same quality headliners you have come to expect, and a view to some exciting new projects in 2011.

Miss Perry and Birmingham Promoters are excited to bring I Blame Coco to the Hare and Hounds for her Reading and Leeds Festival warm up show…

Born in northern Italy on July 30, 1990, Eliot Pauline Sumner received a first-rate musical education from her father, Sting. She grew up in a small village in Wiltshire, England, and kept herself largely removed from the glamour and glitz of her father’s career. By her mid-teens, however, “Coco” Sumner had taken a cue from her Dad by composing reggae-flavored songs of her own, many of which were posted to her MySpace page. Several labels took interest in the material, and Coco subsequently signed a multi-album deal with Island Records.

While working on her debut album, the 18 year-old Coco assembled a small band that included session keyboardist Emlyn Mailliard and multi-instrumentalist Al Shux (who produced Jay-Z’s first chart-topping hit, “Empire State of Mind,” in 2009). Sporting a fashionable sound that sampled equally from pop, ska, and electro-punk, I Blame Coco began releasing songs in early 2010, including a duet with the Swedish pop vocalist Robyn. Fresh from festival appearances at Isle of Wight and Glastonbury, I Blame Coco will show you how polished quality credible pop is meant to be.

Aries is a UK based Drum & Bass, Jungle and Dubstep DJ/Producer. He has been a part of bass culture music since 1990 and hasn’t looked back since. His main influences are Roots and Dub Reggae which will come as no surprise if you listen to his music or have heard him play. His music is unique and offers soul and depth that not only makes people think and listen but holds its weight and has maximum impact on the dance floor.

Aries is a regular on the UK DJ circuit playing many of the main nights, and has played shows across the world including tours in Czech Republic, the Balkans and most of Europe. In 2009 he was given the title Best Local DJ in the Night Times in Birmingham.

His first outing on vinyl was in 2005 on Co-Lab Recordings with the heavily supported ‘Herbsmoke’. This was championed by DJ Bailey and made it onto BBC Radio 1 and 1XTRA, as did another of Aries’ works, ‘Brother and Sister’. Aries’ music has been played by the likes of Shy FX, Bryan G, & Zane Lowe.

After 15 years behind the decks, Malicious DJ & The Doctor continue to create a memorable party experience for a variety of audiences across the country. Two thirds of The Brotherhood Of Filth (Malicious, The Doctor, & DJ Switch), the co-founders of Bass Operations, & long time residents of Heducation & Scratch Club, display their love for Turntablism, Hip Hop, Reggae, Dubstep, DnB & much more during their versatile & creative sets. Expect to hear a party mashup of all things Reggae along with a Sumo-sized serving of Scratch sauce.

Based in Birmingham, Blendstate Visuals provide custom visual content, live video performance and video installation services for music events. We combine a huge stock of video suitable for any genre together with custom content and live cameras to add something special to any event.

Sumo will be cultivating an attitude free party night for all to enjoy.

‘Growing Pains’, the debut album from Leeds trio Dinosaur Pile-up, will be released via Friends Vs Records this September.

Led by the single Birds And Planes, released on digital download and limited-edition 7” vinyl, available just prior to the album on July 26, Growing Pains is the sound of a one of the UKs most exciting bands hitting their stride. It comes, following a handful of introductory independent releases over the past year and a bit, after which the band’s frontman and creative force Matt Bigland entered Bridlington’s Lodge Studios with producer James Kenosha to record the debut, taking place over January and February this year. The result is a storming rock powerhouse of big pop songs driven by the kind of wall shaking undercurrent only a three piece can muster.

Bigland says of the album: “I know it sounds bent but I liked the idea of people to be able to sing along to the songs, even if they were singing about being hated or upset. I wanted to make a record that kicks people in the face whilst getting stuck in their head.”

Their career to date was led by the January 2009 debut 7″ single My Rock N Roll, followed by a second single Traynor, and last year’s summer release, modestly titled The Most Powerful EP In The Universe – which spawned songs such as Summer Hit Single, Beach Bug and Cat Attack.

Their live plot to date has seen them tour with a rich cast of bands including a UK/European jaunt with the Pixies in December, and a French tour with Violens for the coveted Les Inrocks tour last Spring. On the festival circuit the band has shared stages with Crooked Vultures on the Radio One tent at last year’s Reading and Leeds festivals, and they headline NME’s Halloween spectacular at Koko last October. Elsewhere they have performed alongside Future Of The Left, Pulled Apart By Horses and The Automatic, and last summer stormed the festival circuit performing at Bestival, Oxegen, T In The Park, and aforementioned Reading and Leeds festivals.

They will return to the live stage this September with a headline run ahead of the album’s release.

‘Growing Pains’ will be available digitally and on CD / Vinyl.

Black Heart Generator / Digit Dealer / The Targets

Crawling like a one legged misanthrope from the glade of curmudgeonly union, other wise known as Kings Heath, a three headed beast now designated the moniker Black Heart Generator first reared its collective cranium in mid 2009.
Having spent the previous 12 months or so expediating across this fairly broken isle, conveying a debauched bacchanalia to various cities and towns, there is now a rumour, like a whisper on the wind, that a release is soon to be forthcoming, and the performance of askew alternative vibrant indie energy driven deconstructionism is set to traverse even further and wider with immediate affect.
Black Heart Generator play an agressive brand of noisy grungish punkish alternative music, with dangerous hints of melody, and the odd hint of Motown.

Digit Dealer was formed not that long ago, an art school student at Pratt met an Indian kid from Queens at a party. Now they record CDs and play music together for drunk friends at house parties (and real places sometimes too). One time at a show, a random gentleman, by the name of Sean, randomly got up on stage and started playing real drums to one of our songs. He became part of the band after that.

To coincide with America’s Independence Day celebrations we will be launching our roasts on Sunday July 4th!! And then every Sunday there after…

In true SFP fashion our chef Mr Finn will be mixing it up and providing a very cajun twist to the Roasts so expect the unexpected…

Featuring members of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Tropic of Nelson, The Depreciation Guild is a fuzzed-out, reverb drenched pop/electronic group consisting of Kurt Feldman (guitar, vocals, programming), Christoph Hochheim (guitar, vocals), and Anton Hochheim (drums). Backed solely by a Nintendo Entertainment System, the band blankets their sound with the crushing blows of its 8-Bit 2A03 sound chip. Drawing inspiration from classic dream-pop bands such as Pale Saints, and Cocteau Twins, as well as 80’s synth-pop masters such as Bill Nelson, Gangway, Scritti Politti and YMO, The Depreciation Guild have artfully cultivated a unique sound that strikes a balance between progressive and retro-chic.

Support comes from Jodie & The Jet Plane, a five piece with a nice line in soaring (I guess that’s where the Jet Plane bit comes in) vocals and emotive lyrics who, in places, reminds a little of All About Eve (floaty folky rocky 80’s band who sang songs about stuffing flowers in their hair, sitting by harbours and being ‘ocean waves’…it happens, right?).

Although still technically a teenager, Dan Cullen is a Latitude Veteran – with lyrical ability that is leaving audiences up and down the county jaw-dropped. He’s ace.

This summer Leon is gracing the Latitude stage so we thought maybe we’d invite him round for a warm up. Matt Windle
He’s a boxer. He used to be the Young Poet Laurete and he’s quickly become one of the best young performers in the country. If you want to know what a young-boxer-poet looks like he’s on a HUGE Billboard on broad street. Wicked.

Little Palm.
The first lady of Tantrums but has long been one of the most spellbinding songtresses in Birmingham, possibly the world. Lets go with the world. Her powerful but beautiful songs have brought her to the attention of many including Bigger than Barry Records. One of the best ladies, ever. What a woman.

Eliza Little
Birmingham has a hidden gem. Her name is Eliza Little. Shes tiptoed onto the scene with her lovely accounts of JLS concerts and facebook encounters. We’ve invited her round to ours to share some more stories to give you all the chance to fall in love with her just as much as we have.

The people who brought the sell-out show featuring Fabio to the Hare and Hounds on February 13th return with more upfront liquid music to uplift and soothe your soul.

Nu:tone

Since signing to Hospital in 2003, Nu:Tone has come through the ranks to become a highly respected producer, with other drum & bass producers & DJs such as LTJ Bukem and Dillinjaplaying his tunes in their DJ sets. He also introduced his brother Matt (Logistics) to drum & bass production through their collaboration Nu:logic, which led to Matt being signed to Hospital records aswell.
His debut album Brave new World was released in 2005, with the drum & bass community greatly supporting it. DJs such as Norman Jay and Tom Middleton made Nu:Tone a favourite of their eclectic sets. Off the back of this success, Nu:Tone has taken his DJing all over the world, from USA to Asia to Australia. He has also remixed tracks from Alice Russell and Quantic as well as producing a track for Jenna G. Nu:tone is tailor made for this venue.

Jenna G

In music Jenna is well known for her vocal and writing talents on a number of distinguished underground tracks in a number of genres but more prolifically in Drum n Bass, the genre of her own highly successful first solo album For Lost Friends released on the Bingo Beats record label March 2006. Tracks from the album were produced by a variety of prominent drum and bass producers such as Nu:tone, Kabuki, Friction, D Bridge, D KAY and TC1. After her band split, Jenna G continued singing and writing songs for EMI publishing which saw her working with So Solid’s JD, Danni Minogue and Aleesha Dixon amongst others. It was during this time in London that she was picked up by the BBC’s black music radio station, 1Xtra.

Having gained a solo spot on the BBC’s 1Xtra 2 years back, Jenna can be found every weekend morning bringing you a jam packed show of the best in black music, entertainment and a live listener generated request show.

Jenna G is currently the official vocalist for The Shapeshifters having appeared on their first album as songwriter and backing vocalist. The new album Do Not Disturb which features her songwriting and vocal talents was released in 2008.

Utah Jazz

We also welcome back Utah Jazz who smashed up the Hare and hounds in February and celebrate the launch of his new album vintage. Luke Wilson’s career started in the mid 90;s, when he began to DJ and learn the production ropes with D and B legend Alex Reece. Several years later, the trademark, solo Utah Jazz was born leading to a release for Hospital Records and a large number of tracks on Liquid V. In 2006, Utah Jazz received widespread international acclaim with his remix of Roni Sizes classic, “It’s a jazz thing”. Thanks to support from dance music heavyweights Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Pendulum, Andy C and Grooverider, chart success soon followed with the remix reaching number 1 in the Radio 1 dance charts.

Production aside, check this man out on the decks and you’ll begin to realise why he’s now one of the most in demand DJs on the world Drum n Bass circuit.

Relentless touring around the globe include headline gigs and festivals fro the likes of Vestax in Poland, Smirnoff in Prague and Red Bull in the Siberian mountains! Closer to home, Utah’s high energy, funk-fuelled performances have made him a firm favourite at London clubs Fabric Live, Movement, The End and Ministry of Sound.

London based Electronic/New Wave band led by Sebastien Marshal O’Malley – a native of northwest England and former member of R3mote (signed to Andrew Weatherall’s RGC label)

Detachments formed at the tail end of 2007 after Fear No Fear was discovered online by THISISNOTANEXIT RECORDS who intercepted the track (which was initially planned for release on Kill The DJ Records). Detachments became a live entity at the dawn of 2008, debuting in South London supporting a fledgling Ladyhawke.

Detachments’ impressive production credits pack a serious punch:-

Detachments’ debut album is scheduled for a Feb 2010 release.

FLOWERS THAT FELL was awarded BBC Radio1’s Lamacq Alternative Single Of The Week in April 2009. NME magazine featured it in their “10 Tracks You Have To Hear This Week” at No.3. The Track was produced by Trevor Jackson, the remix by Toronto’s Parallels (Crystal Castles collaborator) blew the track up on dancefloors world-wide.

DJ SKIRT has been flitting off all around the country, playing techno clubs, festivals, radio shows, all giving her the warmest of welcomes. Her sets forTHC have always gone down a storm and encouraged even more fans in the midlands.

SUBCITIZEN has played allsorts, all his life, and techno is the backbone. His adoration of the glitchy edge of sounds really brings life to his techno sets, and he isnt shy to incorporate other patterns over those slamming techno drums.

Simon Owen is part of an exciting new wave of electronic artists emerging from the Birmingham underground. Co-founder of the Xenophorm label, he is currently producing for and managing the brands two record labels (Xenophorm Records & xe:tech:no), whilst also holding the position of Chief Engineer at Xenophorm Studios in the heart of the second city.

A musician of notable talent from an early age, his debut single – unex, was released worldwide as part of the XTK001 EP in 2006. This was followed by a full-length production album ‘The rainbow that set the sky on fire’ in 2007 and a continuing string of successful single releases on the xe:tech:no label. As Chief Engineer of Birmingham’s prominent Xenophorm Studios he has been silently responsible for many of the hot tracks on the city’s thriving Grime & urban scenes, whilst regularly maintaining his popular monthly podcast ‘theLAB Sessions’.

As a DJ he has entertained crowds around the country for nearly a decade with his trademark styles of groove-licked Techno & heart-wrenching Soul at events such as Elektrik Munkey, Osmosis, Alternation, Sub-Culture, Warpandwoof and the Xenophorm/Alternation joint venture – PhormAtion.

Having released (under their previous alias) a split 7” with Rolo Tomassi, a limited edition tape and a solo debut single in the past year, they’re no strangers to productivity either. Allayed firmly with the UK underground, YOUVES are vocal proponents of the independent spirit; like Black Flag being produced by James Murphy, but without the steroids and militant dogma. They’re an efficient machine, well flexed, high on beer and protein, poised to steal hearts, minds and girlfriends.

Brontide – Malpas bassist Mr Hancock also flutters in a different sonic vein, which bears the Brontide name. Personally a more enjoyable and accessible watch than last time Miss Perry watched Mars Volta, it is an aboslute joy to welcome them to the bosom of the Hare and Hounds.

What do they sound like? well…stomping, mathy webs of complex guitar lines, intricate bass stabs and monstrous drums. I’d say something rather special. They’re are signed to Holy Roar, great friends of the brilliant Rolo Tomassi, Pulled Apart By Horses and all round wonderful, talented MEN.

Archie Bronson Outfit return with their much anticipated new album, Coconut, on March 1st 2010. Coconut is the London based three-piece’s first LP in almost four years and their third album for Domino.

Los Angeles producer Nosaj Thing is the rising star of the Brainfeeder collective with remix credits for the likes of Flying Lotus, Daedelus & Radiohead.

Jason Chung was inspired at an early age by the hip-hop radio stations that the bus driver would play on his way to elementary school, and particularly by the Beat Junkies’ turntablism on Power 106. In high school, while delving into the sounds of drum’n'bass and the rave scene and playing quad toms in the school drum line, he figured out how to use his father’s old PC to start programming beats of his own. Further along, Chung was motivated to move in more experimental directions by the D.I.Y. rock scene at L.A.’s underground venue ~The Smell, where he made his live debut as Nosaj Thing in 2004. Through online and in-person networking, on message boards and, eventually, at the more beat-oriented music spot ~Low End Theory, Chung came into contact with likeminded Angelenos including Flying Lotus, Nobody, Daedelus, and local legends (and personal heroes) like D-Styles and Daddy Kev. Following the self-released Views/Octopus EP in 2006 (whose track “Aquarium” was later used by rapper Kid Cudi as the basis of his “Man on the Moon”), he signed with Kev’s Alpha Pup imprint for his full-length debut, Drift, in 2009. Chung has also contributed beats to MCs Busdriver and Nocando, and made remixes for Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Radiohead, and ~Smell staples Health.

Bernadette O’Grady is an acoustic singer-songwriter from North Ireland, who now lives in West Wales. She began writing and performing songs, whilst living in New York, influenced at the time by both Irish and American artists. Her material ranges from contemporary storytelling to more reflective and soulful songs performed with honest emotion. Bernadette has gained an excellent reputation on the UK acoustic scene for her exceptionally fine songwriting, intricate guitar-playing, and distinctively beautiful vocals. Growing up in a musical family naturally evoked the discovery of the enchanting voice and inspired creativity heard within the songs of De’Borah. With influences from Alicia Keys and Eva Cassidy, De’Borah started singing and writing at age 11. As she hit her teens the sound of Keane’s ‘Bedshaped’ on the radio, (literally) spun her around to a world of indie and later rock music. A wide range of artists have since inspired her songs and musical style-such as Joni Mitchell, The Police and John Mayer. De’Borah’s songs are filled with sincerity, warmth and a vulnerability that allows her to remarkably inspire and engage with an audience. As a recent graduate of the BRIT School for Performing Arts, which produced acts like Katie Melua, Amy Winehouse and Adele, she continues to grow and take her music to higher levels. Boat To Row formed in May 09′ from Nuneaton and play folk music that encourages you to tap your toe in time. Chief songwriter Michael King began writing after his grandmothers record collection was passed down to him. After digesting the likes of Donovan, Joan Baez, Buddy Holly and Bob Dylan as well as current artist Fionn Regan, he began to craft his own songs with a longing to write songs that “Are just nice to listen to” writing about what any 21 year old would: love; loss; friendships and life. The current E.P ‘Crossroads’ will be released on the 17th of May on a limited Tape Run courtesy of label Danger! Lazer! Phaser! Razor! with more released planned throughout the year.

Perhaps the most entertaining musician in the world! Tom Peel writes abstact folk music that takes in everything from Americana through to Warp Records-esqe experimentation.

Black Mountain

Black Mountain is a Canadian rock band led by Stephen McBean. The band is an amalgamation of the Classic Rock / Blues Rock of Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath with some psychedelic tendencies.

Leader Stephen McBean also heads another similarly-named band, Pink Mountaintops, who are the more experimental side of McBean’s musical abilities. Black Mountain is the front line band for Black Mountain Army. By day, McBean works in a needle-exchange facility for drug addicts, near Vancouver’s infamous Main & Hastings intersection, widely considered to be the heroin capital of Canada, if not North America.

Matt Camirand and Joshua Wells are also in Blood Meridian.

Since then, Jackie’s songs have followed a dark, gloomy theme – Jackie describes his songs as “saying shit happens” and then helping people to deal with it…

Silver Apples

An electronic/psychedelic duo formed in 1967 in New York City. They originally consisted of Simeon Coxe III (who played a custom home-made synthesizer known as the “Simeon”) and Danny Taylor (drums). The duo split in 1970. The group was reformed in 1996 by Simeon and new drummer Xian Hawkins. Danny Taylor returned to the band in 1998 and the band toured and recorded as a trio until 1999 when Simeon was injured in a car accident. The band returned to making music in 2006, but without Taylor, who died in 2005.

Contrasting the flowery psychedelic rock music of the late-1960s, Silver Apples created an avant-garde sound based on little more than a homemade synthesizer (named the Simeon after their lead singer – Simeon) and an extensive drumkit.

Silver Apples created what are now widely regarded as the first rock-orientated albums to utilise electronic techniques. The pulsating, droning rhythms of the oscillators, backed by Taylor’s repetitive, free-form drumming, pre-dated the similar sounds made by Krautrock acts such as Can and Neu! by a couple of years, and the records later became a huge influence on such bands as Suicide, Spacemen 3 and Stereolab.

For the third event, ‘The Source’ is really going back to the roots of Rave culture and is proud to present the Acid House legend – DJ Trevor Fung…!

Born in July 1961 in Hammersmith, London, Trevor’s music career started from admirably humble beginnings, playing soul and rare groove cuts around London in the late seventies alongside people such as Pete Tong, Tony Thorpe and his long time friend, Paul Oakenfold.

During the early 80’s Trevor began ‘hanging out’ on the Spanish island of Ibiza and in 1982, he was invited to play at the legendary Ibiza club, Amnesia with respected resident DJ and friend Alfredo. Later that year, he teamed up with Paul Oakenfold to set up The Funhouse and the infamous Project Club in Streatham where they gave opportunities to up and coming deejays including Carl Cox and Danny Rampling. In 1987 Trevor returned to Ibiza with the Project Club concept playing a mix of Hip Hop, Acid and House, which became known in the media as Balearic Beat. His influence and what followed during this particular period is immeasurable. Fellow DJ’s and friends Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway, Johnny Walker, Lisa Loud and Danny Rampling were all visitors to Trevor’s events in Ibiza in 1987 inspiring them to launch seminal club nights in the UK including Future, Shoom, Spectrum, The Land Of Oz, and Trip which changed the face of the UK club scene forever. Trevor regularly played at all of these nights and went on to headline at the infamous M25 orbital raves such as Sunrise, Energy, World Dance and Biology.

This will be an extremely rare opportunity to hear a 90-minute Acid House/Balearic set that encompasses the 1986 – 89 era which culminated in the infamous ‘Summer of Love’ and set the scene for the entire UK dance scene which exists today…

Trevor will be supported by ‘The Source’ residents Gershwin and DJ X, along with DJ Timeless (Pandemonium).

First Aid Kit – Swedish indie/folk duo consisting of the young sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg from Stockholm.
The debut EP “Drunken Trees” was released on the 9th of April 2008 in Sweden on the label Rabid Records, owned by the Swedish electronic duo The Knife. The EP was re-released through Wichita Recordings early 2009.
Their debut album The Big Black & The Blue was released on January 2010.

Support comes from Goodnight Lenin – ‘As the era of past outings ended we ventured into the forest to say goodnight to the pasture of our youth. The following winter was harsh and volatile alas we didn’t dare return to the forest. It eventually passed as did the spring and we woke to the scent of summer resting on our senses. We gathered our thoughts and stepped outside of the darkened room leaving our past triumphs to collect dust. With satchels in tow we climbed the hill which we had once walked to find the path we wished to travel. It seemed that months had passed and yet we were still to find our way. Our legs were tiring and the absence of motivation forced us to lie down and go back to sleep. As my head rested in the leaves i heard the sound of considered notes chiming beneath the earth. I alerted the sleeping and began to move the leaves and sure enough there it was; the path. We had been advancing in the right direction the entire time without even knowing. As we moved the earth to reveal the red brick we could see that the path was littered with words and notes which we collected and hurled into our satchels as we made a dash for the forest. We entered the grave yard, dragged our instruments from the ground and began to play.’

The quite magnificent line-up for Mostly Jazz includes Sun Ra Arkestra, Cymande, Quantic & His Combo Barbara, Courtney Pine, James Taylor Quartet, Polar Bear and many, many others. Joining us for DJ sets at the afterparty will be the mighty Quantic, along with Craig Charles from the 6Music Funk & Soul Show, who will be compering the festival.

Rogue States, some bands aspire to greatness; chasing big sounds and big ideas in an attempt to resonate. For others, it just happens to them. And so it is for Birmingham four piece Rogue States. The big ideas they wrestle with lyrically, like the widescreen, stadium guitars which back them, are there because the instant pop songs they set out to write got hijacked by questions and circumstance. The soaring melodies and driving anthems, like the obvious U2/Coldplay/Snow Patrol comparisons, are there because that’s just what happens when feeling and towering choruses meet.
Inevitably, years of near constant touring resulted in close friendships with Razorlight, particularly with then drummer Andy Burrows, who on nights off would come and see Rogue States play and in a bizarre role reversal, would help Stuart set-up his drums. In March 2009 the band supported Razorlight on their UK tour and then Andy literally put his money where his mouth is and paid for the recording of the band’s debut EP.

Friendly Fire Band – 3 THE HARD WAY

Every third friday of the month, Friendly Fire Sessions is the only regular live reggae event in the Midlands. This month, the Friendly Fire Band will be playing live on stage fronted by Lion Art, Pablo Rider and Tomlin Mystic.

Lion Art is the most fiery vocalist in the South Brum and has been tearing up stages in the past few years with his militant delivery and tracks like Welcome to Holland and Badness.

Pablo Rider, the fastest mouth in the West Midlands, is a veteran DJ who has too many credits to mention, and has toured the world some of the Uks biggest artists, and is still killing it with tracks like Miss the Bus and Genevieve.

Natural Mystic has been performing with many bands around Birmingham since the late 70s and his performances are a mystical experience. He can touch the most serious subjects as in Eye for and Eye but also more humourous as in “Inspector Ganja”

Soil & “Pimp” Sessions is an energetic Japanese club jazz band that have started to receive international recognition. The band consists of six members: Shacho (“agitator”), Tabu Zombie (trumpet), Motoharu (sax), Josei (keyboards), Akita Goldman (double bass) and Midorin (drums).

The band was born out of Tokyo’s club scene, when Shacho and Tabu Zombie started including live jam sessions in DJ sets. Gradually the other members were invited, the band line up was finalised and the DJ sets dropped.

The band’s adrenalin-fuelled live sets started to create a buzz on the Tokyo live scene, and in 2003 they became the first unsigned band to perform at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival. They were well received there and in the following months record companies were scrambling to offer contracts. JVC Victor won the battle, and summer 2004 saw the release of the mini-album “Pimpin’”.

The album was a critical and, for a jazz release, commercial success, and this together with constant touring paved the way for the release of their first full album, “Pimp Master” in early 2005. The album captures the sheer power of their live performances as well as higlighting their individual musical talents. Two tracks in particular, “Waltz For Goddess” and their cover of “A Wheel Within a Wheel”, caught the attention of DJs abroad, they began to receive heavy air-play on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide radio program on BBC Radio 1 in the U.K.

Summer 2005 was a busy time for the band, with the release of their second mini-album, “Summer Goddess”, and their first live dates outside Japan. Gilles Peterson invited them to play at Cargo in London, and Jazzanova invited them to play in Berlin.

They spent the rest of the year, touring in Japan and Europe, and they were also featured in the live broadcast of the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards in 2005, where they were awarded the John Peel Play More Jazz Award.

A second full album, “Pimp of the Year”, was released in spring 2006, showcasing sounds that showed a development of their sound, as well as one or two tracks that marked a new departure.

2006 has also seen the official release of “Pimp Master” in Europe on Compost Records and the UK on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings label. They have continued touring constantly throughout the year, taking in Britain, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia and Croatia, as well as an appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

March 2007 saw the release of their third full album, “PIMPOINT”, under the Victor Entertainment label, the album features thirteen solid tracks that follow suit with SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS unique heavy jazz sound.

7 Inch Cinema featuring The Mobile Cinema

A whole year after our last event here, 7inch returns to the Hare and Hounds for an evening of signs and wonders from around the corner and across the globe. As well as the usual short films and musical interludes we’re very happy to welcome special guest Romana Schmalisch.

Romana is a Berlin-born artist with an interest in urbanism and the tradition of travelling film lecture shows. Inspired by an ingenious mini-cinema in 1938 film The New Moscow (dir: Alexander Medvedkin), she has created her own version of the device which combines a projector with semi-circular screen and black cloth. It forms the centre-piece for the Mobile Cinema show, with readings of specially commissioned texts and a selection of film pieces exploring railways, future cities and outer space.

Jace Everett’s song “Bad Things” was chosen as the theme for the HBO series True Blood, he combines the depth of traditional country song writing with a fusion of powerful rock, Americana and blues.

~ Birmingham Promoters presents: Wax Fang
Wax Fang is a band from Louisville, KY. Originally a solo project of lead singer and frontman Scott Carney, in 2005 the band was fleshed out by drummer Kevin Ratterman and bassist Jake Heustis. The band came to prominence in 2006 when they opened for fellow Louisvillians My Morning Jacket.

~ Capsule presents: Chrome Hoof + guests
Doom metal, disco, acid house and Donna Summer had a car crash on the highway to oblivion. Chrome Hoof emerged from the wreckage, grooving. Somewhere between 10 and 14 members, depending on who turns up. A combination of primal feeling, virtuosity, theatre, brooding menace, late 70s glamour and large monsters made out of chromed titanium, Chrome Hoof should not really make any sense whatsoever — but they do.

~ Friendly Fire Sessions presents: Friendly Fire Band feat. Bongo Chilli
One of the UK’s hottest dancehall artists who mixes humour with consciousness, and has recorded with many UK urban producers. Chili has mashed up the Friendly Fire Sessions last year with his “peppery!” DJ style and explosive stage presence, and this month, he will be performing an exclusive set backed by the Friendly Fire Band alongside Lion Art, Pablo Rider and Natural Mystic.

~ Sugarfoot Stomp May Day Special
Well it’s that time of year when we return to nature and embrace the great outdoors- like a favourite uncle who only visits once-annually bearing treats. The theme for this month’s ‘Stomp is inspired by May Day festivals but rather than just crowning a May Queen we will be inventing the May King too. Whoever this happens to be will win some goodies!

~ Capsule presents: Wolves in the Throne Room + Tweak Bird
It has been five years since Wolves in the Throne Room emerged from the rain-soaked Cascadian underground with a singular musical alchemy. Characterized by a heavy and powerful analog sound and a deft touch with songwriting and arrangement. The crumbling roar of decidedly old-school tube amps unite with layers of mossy analog synthesizer and cataclysmic percussion.

~ Organic presents: Eddie Piller
Come and catch Eddie playing a very rare Birmingham set, covering many decades and styles of music, that will be sure to have the floor rocking start to finish. Starting his career in the 1980s as part of the English mod revival, Piller launched underground fanzine Extraordinary Sensations and operated as a DJ and concert promoter. Piller has continued to be influential in the underground dance music scene due to many live DJ appearances and his evening radio show on BBC Radio 6.

Finally recovered from their mammoth 17th Birthday at the Rainbow Warehous…e and Garden which featured guests such as Jerome Hill, Neil Landstrumm and Makaton, House of God returns to the more intimate surroundings of the Hare and Hounds for a Bank Holiday Residents Special.

It used to be said that a club is only as good as its residents and House of God have proudly proven this statement by retaining its core of residents for the past 17 years and becoming the longest running active club night in the Midlands.

In room 1, the mighty Surgeon, Sir Real and Paul Damage have been with the club since day 1 and were joined a few years later by Harvey Lane and Nicky B who have all delivered their trademark take on techno and house to audiences across the world but always return to their beloved Birmingham when the HoG calls…

In room 2, drum + bass veteran DJ-X has provided the darkness to HoG`s 2nd room for 15 years now and is joined for this Bank Holiday by old skool hero and HoG regular, Gershwin (The Source, Pandemonium) alongside breaks and electro-meisters – Deadbeat and Sean Tighe.

All this for a fiver…. on a Bank Holiday Saturday? What more could you want…..
