Martyn Joseph Plays With Band For The First Time In 15 Years

April 28th, 2011  |  Published in News by Robbie

Acoustic artist Martyn Joseph? Not just what it says on the tin.

Another guitar laden singer songwriter he may be, but in these transient times where musicians have a seemingly inevitable disposability, the longevity of Martyn’s thirty year career suggests he has something special to offer. And on this tour? He most definitely does. For the first time in fifteen years, the “Under Lemonade Skies” UK  tour will see Martyn Joseph joined onstage by a live band.

Tha Martyn Joseph Band Tour is something far removed from an average Martyn Joseph show. On returning from his recent tour of Canada, Martyn has announced that he is thrilled to be touring with such talented musicians; something he feels will offer his legions of fans  something different whilst offering new fans the chance to experience an enhanced acoustic experience.

Often likened to musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, John Mayer and Bruce Cockburn, Martyn’s come a long way since the days when Epic signed him after he sold 30,000 copies of his self-financed album ‘An Aching and A Longing’. He continues to tour extensively on both sides of the Atlantic, building up a constantly expanding and enthusiastic fan base, bringing to their towns what many have described as ‘the best musical experience of their lives.’

There is versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre. Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. Built around memories and observations alike, his work is inspired by all that’s good in the world and also that with which society often falls short.

Martyn Joseph. A unique talent driven by passion and love for his trade, he continues to write, sing and play from the heart. It’s a road he’s been travelling for most of his life and as he often tells his audience; ‘you keep turning up and so will I.’

Tickets for the Martyn Joseph Band Tour are onsale now, to order tickets please visit www.martynjoseph.com

Monday & Wednesday – Back Bar quiz – Lots of prizes to be won!

Tuesday

This Is Tmrw presents: Johnny Foreigner / Pandas and People / VS

- college rock, with occasional bursts of electronica or alt-country, pop-tinged spiky rock songs with boundless melody and energy or anything else that seems like a good idea at 5 in the morning. The band released their debut ‘Waited Up Till It Was Light’ and it was instantly hailed as a classic by fans and media alike.

S&H presents: Stitches and Hos Fundraiser

Come along and help us raise money to fill the S&H coiffers with new wool and needles.

As you may (or may not) know we offer free wool and needles to anyone that comes along to our night. After 5 years of knitting hootenannys the S&H cupboard is almost bare.

We’ll be holding a raffle with lots of handmade and knitting/stitching prizes and selling scrumptious sweet treats from our delicious cake stall. Sounds to stitch to will be provided by Matt Snowden

Wednesday

Miss Perry & Birmingham Promoters presents: Evil alien / Arc Vel / Free School DJ’s

‘We reject this blasé attitude and strive to achieve excellence in a world where there is a demand for only mediocrity. We are following great people who we count as influences in creating real music that will sustain and thrive through these fickle times.’

Q Magazine exclaimed…”Brummie sextet who count the likes of Portishead, UNKLE and Kraftwerk as influences, but who fuse their trip hop / electronica roots with a hulking bottom end”.

Thursday

ItsJustNoise presents: Kong

Infamous Manchester three-piece renowned for their relentless sonic assault against all things conventional and boring. Recent tours have caused jaws to drop in every city, with rave reviews from Artrocker, Drowned in Sound and Kerrang. Their intense off-kilter noise rock never fails to leave you feeling awkward and unsettled – ferociously powerful, stunningly inventive, with equal doses of terrifying and humorous.

World Unlimited presents: Nick Harper

One of the finest guitarists of his generation, his soaring vocal range and propensity for epic song place him somewhere between Rufus Wainright and Jeff Buckley. Thus far, however, putting his musical freedom before the demands of career, his talents have gone largely unrewarded. Miracles For Beginners, his most focused, warm and triumphant album to date, could right that wrong!

Friday

THE SCHIZODELIC SOUND presents: Bank Holiday Party – Guy Carlos / Aaaron (The Bees) / Twirlin Merlin

Spear headed by DJ Guy C (Gorillaz Sound System and The Bees Tour DJ, throwing it down on the decks like a man possessed) , Aaron Fletcher (The Bees main man, song writer and internationally treasured musical innovator ) and Twirln Merlin (Zombie Flesh Eater, mindblowing maximalist artist and graphical craftsman busting with the A to Z of sound) it all adds up to the most ridiculously dope record box you’ve ever looked in, combined with Kaleidoscopically-psychephrenic lightshows, visuals and animated posters The Schizodelic Sound is here. Fundamentally with the  basic ideal of keeping the dance floor alive.

THE BIG TEN INCH presents: Derriere / The Magnificatz / Count Skylarkin / Van Mule

Birmingham’s new night for rock n roll, SCREAMIN’ r&b, 50’s jump-blues, swing, ska, skiffle, shuffle, handclap, gospel, jive, 60s beat and misbehavior. featuring: DERRIERE – LIVE – Conceived late one night in Brighton’s ever-pregnant musical underbelly, Derriere delivers a playfully raunchy mix of old school rock and roll, vintage soul, rockabilly and jumpin’ rhythm n blues. And they’re probably the hardest-drinking band we’ve ever had at The Big Ten Inch!

For the next Elixir we’re going back to basics and back to bringing the people of Birmingham the freshest acts that have never ventured to our fine city to play before. You may have heard his release on Fortified Audio or you may not. One thing’s for sure though, you need to. His ‘Footwork’ EP has been on Elixir ‘most played’ list since its release at the end of last year.
