Mostly Jazz Fest

DAVE ANGEL & Colour DJs

It’s almost a year now since Bunka & Cog joined forces in a new venture to bring a healthy dose of raw techno to the city. We launched back in July 2009 at the Hare & Hounds and the man that set the party rocking that night was Sir Billy Nasty. So as the days draw longer and the temperature rises once again, we have invited another Great British techno legend to kick off the summer…

DAVE ANGEL (Rotation/London) Retrospective Set

“Dave makes records like he’s from Detroit, and plays them like he’s from Germany.” – Mixmag 1995

He’s actually from Swindon but that’s beside the point…

With Jazz rooted firmly in his blood, his father was a Jazz musician and his sister Monie Love was part of the Native Tongues hip-hop collective.

DAVE ANGEL reached dizzying heights of notoriety for his energetic fusion of Techno, Funk and Jazz during the 90’s. Heralded as the British counterpart to such transatlantic luminaries as Kenny Larkin and Carl Craig, clearly influenced by the twitterings of the motor city and in a wider sense by Jazz visionaries Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. Dave Angel was a solitary entity in the UK at the time, he never quite enjoyed the success he deserved at home that was in abundance abroad.

He was one of the first British producers to release on the seminal R&S label out of Belgium, and was responsible for starting Rotation Records that helped music by Adam Beyer, The Hacker, Samuel L Session and Steve Rachmad see the light of day. With a hefty back catalogue encompassing a range of sounds from the deep and introspective, to the funky and ferocious, as a selector there ain’t many better.

We have asked Dave to play a special retrospective for us at this night, and he has very kindly agreed. So what better way to spend a summers evening than in an English pub with a huge dollop of techno and dash of Jazz?

ED MACKIE & TOM LONG (Colour/Manchester)

Promoting parties takes a lot of hard work, determination and instinct. A continual balancing act between understanding what your audience wants and what you would like to present to them. We like to think that we recognize these qualities when we see them, so it was not a tough decision to invite along two of the promoters and resident DJs of a night that has been causing a stir across the North of England.

We warmly welcome Ed Mackie and Tom Long to Birmingham for a B2B session representing Colour in Manchester. Ed has been making and DJing Techno for around 10 years and has found much recognition for his efforts under the guise Mucky Beats, being booked to play at many of the lands notorious parties and has supported the likes of Mills, Hood and Beltram in the last 12 months alone.

Tom has held down a popular Internet radio show entitled “Motortechno”, which spawned a night of the same name, and has shared the decks with legends like Derrick May for Detached in Leeds and the Advent to name just a few. He’s found a new regular home with Colour at the prestigious Sankey’s venue. Both are advocates of proper techno, and if there were a “Like” button for that we’d definitely click it.
