The Raveonettes / The Northwestern
The Raveonettes are a danish rock and roll duo consisting of Sune Rose Wagner (guitar, instruments, vocals) and Sharin Foo (guitar and vocals). Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmony inspired by The Everly Brothers, coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 50s and 60s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats and often dark lyrical content, similar to another of the band’s influences, The Velvet Underground. Altogether, they sound very much like a slightly more melodic version of The Jesus and Mary Chain.
The Northwestern are the band spawned from the ashes of Hope Of The States.
After their short and slightly problematic career, they come back with a new and more relaxed project (and in their words: more honest). They have left behind the majority of their post-rock approximations, now focussed more on Pop sounds, but retaining the spark that fans of the previous band loved, like Sam’s voice and the way that he can compose beautiful, emotional lyrics.
The line up consists of:
Sam Herilhy-Guitar/Vocals (Hope Of The States/Thee Dust Rackets/Troubles)
Simon Jones-Drums (Hope Of The States/Thee Dust Rackets/Troubles)
Francesco Menegat-Bass
Jonny Winter-Guitar (The Open)
Ian McCullagh-Guitar
Their first full tour is in May/June 2009 with a release date for their debut single, the AA side “Telephones”/”All The Ones” was released through Friends Vs. Records on 15th June 2009 on 7” vinyl. The single is also available from iTunes. A Demo version of their song ‘fire’ is available through MusicGlue. A link is provided on their official MySpace page.
