Rock for Rights

Central Birmingham Amnesty International group are hosting a top Italian rock band, Devocka, for their benefit gig, Rock for Rights, at the Hare and Hounds on the 20th October.

The headlining act will be in the country for 4 days enjoying everything that Birmingham has to offer.  Devocka have just successfully launched their second album, playing alongside the likes of Penelope Sulla Luna and Bikini the Cat.

This Tuesday, they’ll be supported by the dreamy, husky lyrics of Wiarwan, swinging celtic Americana from Rich McMahon and the pumping noise of They Came With Weapons.

Chair, Charlotte Wetton, says “we are really excited about having such great bands. It’s in keeping that we have an international line-up, as Amnesty International works for human rights all around the world.’

The gig is to raise funds for the group and to raise awareness of human rights violations. It’s not often gig-goers are asked to bring a pen on a night out but this is a rock night with a difference. Bands and audience members can send postcards to the governments of Mexico and the Democratic Republic of Congo calling on them to protect victims of rape and prosecute their attackers.

Campaigner, Pete Doubtfire, says ‘Rape is being used by governments to control women who speak out. Police and soldiers are targeting female human rights activists, knowing that their crimes will go unpunished by the authorities.’

Show your support for human rights by buying a £4 ticket from amnesty.centralbirmingham@gmail.com and having a great night out.
