Jeremy Warmsley/Malpas/A Boy Named Crow
Jeremy Warmsley- ‘England. This Anglo-French singer-songwriter burst onto the UK alternative music scene in the mid-00s with his warm mix of indie pop and folktronica. Growing up absorbing influences from both sides of the English Channel, Warmsley’s natural inquisitiveness for music, poetry, and literature led him to study at the UK’s prestigious Cambridge University. While at Cambridge, Warmsley met a kindred spirit in Simon Mastrantone, and co-founded/co-hosted a poetry and music evening called “Songs In The Dark”. Citing influences as diverse as Aphex Twin, Sam Cooke and Radiohead, Warmsley had a rich array of styles to refer to. He also wore a style of dress which may be considered quintessentially English (braces, trousers, and jacket). With his influences and image set in place Warmsley then locked himself away for most of 2005 to record his self-written, produced and performed album. Using instruments as far ranging as the recorder, flute, toy piano, and guitar Warmsley produced music described in his own words as “Oasis and Artic Monkeys vs. Talking Heads and Tom Waits”
Over the next year, Warmsley released some limited edition EPs, beginning with July 2005′s I Believe In The Way You Move on Exercise1 Records, which featured Blaine Harrison of the Mystery Jets on backing vocals. Warmsley then signed to Transgressive Records and released the EPs 5 Interesting Lies, Other People’s Secrets and I Promise, and a reissue of I Believe In The Way You Move. October 2006 saw the release of the album The Art Of Fiction (named after David Lodge’s tutorial book), which combined oddball ramblings with a musical cacophony of experimental arrangements, prompting comparisons to US maverick Stephin Merritt’ (NME)
