The weekend starts here!

Hopefully this week you’ve managed to soak up some rays while you could, because the weekend isn’t looking so sunshiney.

Still, keeping dry is the perfect excuse to get yourself under our roof where we’ve got a line-up of events good enough to make you drool.

Friday

  • Missing Glasto? Course you are, because you know about The Beastival – a free party chock full of electro/techno/acid/rave/dubstep/Italo disco. Entry’s free so get yourself in
  • Or stick your head into Sugarfoot Stomp’s Holiday Camp Special for tunes from the 20s to 60s and old-fashioned seaside holiday fun. They’re promising a lovely legs competition and other frivolities

Saturday

  • Transglobal Underground recently capped 17 years of recording, performing and award-winning with an album of their greatest hits. Notorious party starter Marc Reck is supporting and I hear he’s been digging deep through some world music treats in preparation.

Sunday

  • Ana Garcia’s flamenco parties aren’t to be missed. It’s hard to pick out the high point – the flamenco taster class from 5-6pm? The tapas and sangria (highly recommended)? The evening of live music and dance? Or the performance of Asin by Ana herself? Word of mouth about these nights is crazy, so snag a ticket as early as possible
  • Don’t fancy getting your dancing shoes out? Then come and check out the cream of local and touring acoustic, singer-songwriter and folk/roots artists. This month we’re proud to have The Kings Of Spain, Aaron Yorke & Ben Calvert performing

What’s on this week, including a handful of legends

We’ve got another varied line-up at the Hare and Hounds this week, with a few bona fide legends coming through the door. Here’s what’s coming up:

Wednesday kicks things off with The Drones with their dirty, psychedelic take on Australian rock. Support comes from Snowman and Barge Pole.

On Thursday there’s a tricky choice to be made. On the one hand The Catapult Club have the ever-entertaining Misty’s Big Adventure. Meanwhile, in the other room, Bohemian Jukebox are curating a line-up that includes Banska, Erinn, Get Frank and Rich Batsford.

Friday is all about Andrew Weatherall. I shouldn’t need to tell you any more about a legend of his calibre so I’m not going to. Just make sure you don’t miss out.

On Saturday we’re got two very different nights under the same roof. Capsule are responsible for bringing Aethenor to Birmingham for one of only three exclusive UK shows. Einstellung are supporting, as are a very special guest.

In the other room you can witness the birth of Cinephonic – a new night with a fine pedigree. They’re starting things off right by bringing Quantic along with his future dance floor-orientated grooves, deep funk and tough drums.

There’s no let-up on Sunday, when we’ll be offering a very tasty-looking morsel – a unique collaboration between Stones Throw’s James Pants and latin soul legend Joe Bataan (who will somehow be on his first ever UK tour). Here’s the flyer for that one:

You can get more information about all of these (including ticket info) on the listings page.

So what have we got coming up for you over the weekend?

Well, starting tonight (weekends start on Thursdays these days) we’ve got “white boy shit”, in the back bar, “running the gamut of guitars from folky to ferocious”. Your host is dj daddynohit with special guest nerdlings.

On Friday the Hare and Hounds hosts a couple of events to keep you entertained. Fieldview are kicking off with a night of eclectic music (and by eclectic we’re talking ska, reggae, post-dance, folk, jazz, funk, hip hop and dub) and cakes. Old School Tie, The Heel and KTB are playing and Jam Jah DJ’s, Matty Garber, SIncopate and The Beat Hustler will keep the tunes flowing between the bands. It’s all in aid of Oxfam Outreach too.

In the smaller room, Sonido Callejero and Sam Redmore are the guests of Magpie Brown. Sonido Callejero are the latin hip hop crew who played here in February. It’s great to have them back. Sam will be here to show why his reputation continues to grow, armed with a potent bag of beats.

Saturday, and the main room welcomes Jibbering along with two bands – 1Eye have just put out their debut single and boast “a distinctive mix of jazz, reggae, latin and soul” so expect to be taken from freeform jazz to skanking beats and back again. Sister Henry and the Prescriptions are an offshoot of the Munchbreak collective – rich, soulful vocals and tight funk will the order of the day.

Meanwhile, Sumo Soundsystem are back with Masters TNT & VYTOL. Mr Boogie Dave & Roskoe provide a gut wobbling warm up to another night of attitude free D’n’B,with Breaks from Dani.c & Lopan plus there’s the added bonus of it being TNT’s birthday.

On Sunday we’ve got something a little different for you – Blackbud are about to drop their debut album having been lauded by critics from the likes of Zane Lowe, MTV2, Uncut Magazine, Classic Rock and The Guardian. Get em while they’re hot. Providing support on the night are Matt Geary and band and Lee Rogers.

Looking forward to seeing you over the weekend. Say hi in the comments if you’re thinking of dropping in.
